Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 5 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by DaleW on 1/11/2024: Lively, though a little less zip than I expected from 2001. Peach, citrus zest, a little petrol. Decent length, not a star ‘01 but fun. B (137 views)
Tasted by blanquito on 12/24/2011 & rated 91 points: A lovely yellow hue, just beginning to go golden. On the nose, fairly subdued with a little talc, some bing cherries, a hint of petrol. The mouth is where the action is with perfect balance for my tastes, marked with a good attack of sultana fruit, steely acidity and terrific length. Tastes of grapefruit rind also appear on the end. Gets a bit lactic-talc-calcareous on the mid-palate, not something I really want in my wine, but it's not out of control. Overall, this has terrific density without being overtly sweet. Really good, would be even better with out the calcium. (1642 views)
Tasted by cweiss on 6/4/2010: Grapy fruit has settled down some. Nice enough but not the acidity that would make it more outstanding. (1973 views)
Tasted by cweiss on 5/21/2009: Ebullient, almost grapey fruit, acid enough though less than usual for Leitz. Not a star in the Leitz constellation, though certainly worth drinking. I think lowered expectation rather than time will enhance the experience. (2302 views)
Tasted by air guitar & pinot noir on 9/13/2006 & rated 89 points: This was an interesting Spatlese. I initially thought it may have been corked since it carried a very unique flavor profile. There were nuances of minerals and some subtle spice that seemed out of place and unique for my perception of a Spatlese. I now notice that this is a Rheingau and that might contribute to the differences in flavor from a Mosel region. While it was interesting I would have to say I did not enjoy it as much as others, especially in this price point. (1568 views)

#2014 Vintage Notes:
2014 Vintage Report by Terry Theise
2014 Vintage Report by Wine Spectator
"My gut still tells me the Saar (and to some extent) the Ruwer are better overall in 2014 than the more storied areas of the Mosel proper, but those that spent the requisite time living in their middle-Mosel vineyards made some of the most electric and "feathery" Riesling in a long time (maybe the finest in 20 years - yes, it's true!)" - Jon Rimmerman (Of course only a very short historical memory would call the Saar and Ruwer less 'storied' than the middle Mosel - jht)

Rheingau

VDP Rheingau (Official site) | The Rheingau (Wines of Germany) | Wikipedia about The Rheingau
On weinlagen.info

The small but fine wine-growing area Rheingau offers one for the culture of the vine ideal microclimate and best soil conditions. The Rhine runs uninterruptedly almost one thousand kilometres from Basel up to its muzzle into the North Sea, in a northerly direction. With a short exception - the Rheingau. The Rheingau mountains force the river to a change in direction here. The vineyards falling in this region to the south stretch really to the sun. The king of the white wines, the Riesling, finds ideal local conditions for the unfolding of his fine fruity and elegant type of vine character on the multilayered weathering grounds with loess, loam and sand additions.
