And, let's assume 25 years later flaws would be hard to hide. The 1998 Eisele has all notable silky tannins, bramble, tobacco, leather, star anise but lacks a little on sweet cassis that I found in 92, 95 & 96. I'm splitting hairs as I've had the pleasure of drinking some profound vintages as of late.
Stand alone and without comparison of the 95 the night before, this bottle definitely holds it's own. The recent 92 was a a ha and a 96 I drank from a mag with Francoise. I ask Peschon if she had a favorite vintage. She listed the most difficult ones. This bottle proves it.
If opening I personally don't recommend a decant of any of these wines from the 90's. The evolution in the glass is perfect.

Beautiful Napa Cabernet with cigar box, old leather but still lots of concentrated fruit notes at this nature stage. Wine is perfectly in equilibrium. The reward for waiting was a stunning wine, subtle complex structured with lingering finish. Wine seemed to gain body with air. Nose: subtle spice, rose, cedar with dark red fruit as it developed Initially smooth tannin and tea with raspberry or pomegranate which gave way to dark cherry and subtle hits of unsweetened cocoa powder as the wine came into its glory which lasted on the finish This wine was reminiscent of a mature Bordeaux rather than a typical Napa cab in complex subtlety. Shared with friends over dinner with other great bottles but almost would have preferred to spend the evening just sipping and exploring the amazing bottle this was. Dont know I would rate this that high but to be honest we were all pretty drunk before popping this wine. Have to open another bottle soon to see if this wine is actually that good. Note that 1998 was a vintage with a horrible reputation but patience has been rewarded. By blind guess was a well-aged wine - either from the left bank or from California. I said it tasted more like a heavy cabernet based Bordeaux but guessed it was probably a Cali Cab just knowing what we have more of in our cellar.
Not fruit driven. Earthy, a bit of smooth saddle leather, light spice, a bit of red fruit. MY son's comment was telling. He said it was good but he likes it when it is a bit sweeter. I think what he really meant was that he likes it a bit more powerful with stronger fruit giving it the appearance of sweetness. This wine "suffers" from being elegant, which, I think, is the result that you get in California in a "bad" year. I just looked at the temperature data for 1998 on the Napa Valley Vintners website. We did a 9-hour slow on (whole bottle to a decanter then back into the bottle minus sediment and then re-sealed) and it still needed 20 mins in the glass to shed the acidic bright flavored and show the true dark fruit and great balance. Beautiful nose, wonderful layers of complex dark fruit and a great finish. The acididity would portend a few years left but it drinks right now as a mature as good as it gets great cab.
