Tasted by Chomsky on 10/1/2023: The showstopper. What a glorious Côte-Rôtie at its absolute peak. I last had this wine seven years ago and since then it has blossomed into its fullest self. The nose is insane, showing red fruits, smoke, ash, flowers, pepper, and with air a lot of camphor - classic Barge. You just get lost in the nose. The palate is generous and silken and still so fresh, the tannins melted away. This about as good as it gets, a great wine from a great vintage. (407 views)
Tasted by pclin on 6/21/2023 & rated 95 points: PnP. ABV 12.5%. €125 before taxes and shipping charges. Shorter cork than normal but Durand pulls it out perfectly. Beautiful bouquet from get-go. Flowers, herbs, stems, and dark soils. Forward and intriguing, woah, 96 points on the nose for sure! Sweet and smooth on the entry, tannins mostly resolved, lively with vibrant acidity level, pretty good length and complexity. Some tobaccos and stem notes lingering at backend. This is drinking at its peak and showing brilliantly, my first experience with this producer and what a performance. Simply awesome, these ‘98 Northern Rhone are really something! First of four acquired from auction. (638 views)
Tasted by lozatron on 4/26/2023: N Rhone Chez R: Well 98 N Rhone is clearly the place to be. Oddly I found myself drinking this faster than the astounding Jamet which sat beside it. Intensity and length on the palate. A hint of florality, some discussion of rose petals at the table, and the idea that this comes from their inclusion of stems. Lovely stuff, rounding off an exquisite flight. (779 views)
Tasted by Povilas on 3/21/2023 & rated 94 points: Loved it. Looks like I have got perfect bottle (impeccable fill level, from reputable seller, might be late release from the winery, as there were many 98's bottles available). Nose if fully mature - dry roses and violets, some ham and smoke notes, old leather. Dry and dense - ultra fine grainy tannins felt like silk on the palate. Nice spicy palate with tad bit short finish. Burgundian style from monsieur Barge, as usually is. Would be happy to try it once again (got all 3 Lalas from 2004 on the same evening and this one stood up good enough. Not the same impressive concentration, but charming elegance with spicy Rhone kick). (583 views)
Tasted by Ernestas on 3/11/2023 & rated 92 points: Barge family were growing grapes since 1860 and became the first in Cote Rotie to sell domaine bottled wines in 1929. Throughout the years it maintained traditional winemaking practices and Gilles is also known for being a traditionalist. Cote Brune is the greatest Cuvee of the family, made from 60 year old Syrah vines. Medium intensity aroma of cherries, cranberries, tar, smoke, plums, leather, violets. Full body, spicy, smoky and well structured with earthy fruit flavours, bright acidity and firm tannins. (509 views)
Tasted by 99glasses on 3/4/2021 & rated 93 points: Classic. Drinking so well now! (967 views)
Tasted by Aravind Asok on 11/20/2020: This is a ridiculously good bottle of wine. This is a crazy Cote-Rotie, and doesn't fit my idea of what aged Cote-Rotie should be. Frankly, the comparison I would draw is Cayuse Cailloux or some other Rocks district Syrah...except done correctly: fantastic acidity, not reductive/bretty bordering on flawed, and 12.5% abv. Wow.

This bottle was just enrapturing...and I wish I could say we had more to get a sense of evolution, but it was gone so fast, even as we tried to savor every sip...this is clearly on the list for one of the best bottles I've had this year. (1107 views)
Tasted by MikeATL on 12/8/2018 & rated 93 points: Not a bad Saturday afternoon: Bloody meat, a little smoke and pepper, brambly fruit and a little leather, nice acidity, a great classic Côte Rotie that is probably at or close to peak, but in no danger of fading any time soon. (1753 views)
Tasted by beatles on 10/31/2017 & rated 94 points: Great stuff. Outperformes the Gerin and the Guigal, this is Old School quality, a savage wine, yet with the elegance of Côte-Rôtie - in that sense better than the Levet tasted some days ago.

Tasted by Chomsky on 6/14/2016: Drop dead gorgeous bottle, with just unreal freshness and energy. Deeply intoxicating nose of fresh red fruits, floral notes, and a hallmark herbal/stemmy signature. I was surprised at the depth and pitch of the fruit on the palate, which showed both fresher red fruits and a core of cassis and hoisin-like density, almost like Hermitage. This is just a beauty and just so good now, though I suspect that the wine will unfurl to its fullest self in about 5 years. (2716 views)
Tasted by salil on 6/13/2016 & rated 94 points: Just a fantastic bottle of Côte-Rôtie. So fragrant and perfumed from the moment the cork was pulled, with all sorts of intense meaty, floral, peppery, stemmy, and briny flavours around a core of fresh red berried fruit. There's an amazing sense of freshness and lightness on the palate - there's not a whole lot of tannin apparent here, but rather a powerful acid spine that contributes most of the structure and makes this feel incredibly vibrant and lively. I could drink a lot of this. Wait, I did. (2717 views)
Tasted by kevin h on 3/17/2014 & rated 92 points: My last bottle. Still youthful, bramble fruit, cassis and a touch sauvage. Ripe fruits, some garrigue and a little subdued, lovely wine though less meaty than some I've had. Hasn't evolved much in five years. Still at least a decade ahead of it. Enjoyable but other bottles were better. (2777 views)
Tasted by TheGreenFrog on 1/26/2012 & rated 90 points: Nice wine. Elegant and well balanced wine; restrained fruit but with lovely flavour and long length. Refreshingly acidic; very moreish. This is fourth bottle I have had; quality has been consistent. Should last a couple of years yet; but not much point in waiting! (3277 views)
Tasted by TBAFB on 12/5/2011 & rated 93 points: Mid-deep ruby with only a little fade at rim. Wonderfully powerful developing bouquet of some complexity. All the classic Barge telltales, violets and schisty bacon. A few hints at various points of game, pepper and garrigue. Medium to full bodied on the palate with excellent acidity to balance. This wine tightens up as it goes down the palate and finishes with a certain medicinal reserve that seems to be quite common in 98's. The fruit does go on past the slightly angular and only just ripe tannins and suggests more development is likely. A very classic and honest wine where the bouquet is probably at its best but the palate is still a touch behind. Drink now with food and for the next ten or so years. (3061 views)
Tasted by TheGreenFrog on 4/23/2011 & rated 92 points: Fairly light in style but nicely balanced wth lovely pure fruit and long peppery finish. Ready to drink and cannot see improving from here. (2602 views)
Tasted by kevin h on 11/28/2010 & rated 93 points: Sauvage, rich, dense and meaty - little evolution since I had it a year ago but a superb cote rotie. Aromatic and dense flavour with great balance. (2779 views)
Tasted by AJ72 on 9/8/2010 & rated 94 points: On opening a resin like pine character emerged from the glass coupled with an element of sauvage and pepper. A really wild nose to begin which seemed to sort itself out into something more complex as my senses got around the opening salvo. Over time this got better and better with a fantastic core of fruit supported by those kind of tannins which build to a firm finish but never seem chunky or furry. Unlike the 92 Chave (see note), whose tannins were incredibly fine and seemed to unlock flavour on impact, the structure here was more untamed and resulted in a good comparison between appellations. I would class this producer as somewhat underrated on the strength of wines tasted over the years. For me Cote Rotie doesn't get much better than this. (2422 views)
Tasted by kevin h on 12/26/2009 & rated 93 points: Youthful colour but a lovely wine with great bacony character on the nose and plenty of branbly fruit and herbs. Classic rull cote-rotie with some verve. Plenty of earthy and herb chanracter but lovely meaty fruit comes through. (2115 views)
Tasted by kevin h on 6/8/2009 & rated 93 points: Still youthful, a bit of talk/sherbert on the nose at first but this quickly gives way to deep brambly scents and a little bit of herb. Lovely long flavour with more bramble, black cherry and a lick of meat on the finish. Delicious now but this should be superb in 3-5 years. (2304 views)
Tasted by kevin h on 12/30/2008 & rated 88 points: A slightly off bottle - a bit too much toast and a bit sherberty - reduced perhaps? Though it didn't improve much over 2 hours. I've had much better bottles. (2180 views)
Tasted by kevin h on 9/14/2008 & rated 93 points: Once again a really lovely wine. After a couple of hours a great nose of thyme, red fruits, bacon, gravy and game - stunning and can only improve with age. Hints of cassis that should develop more as it ages. Lovely thick gamey flavour with garrigue, ripe raspberry red fruit and some density. Lingering smoky finish. Good acidity but well balanced. I love Barge's wines from a good vintage - seriously underrated. (2259 views)
Tasted by Rupert on 8/9/2008 & rated 92 points: This was so fresh, the syrah fragrance soared and danced, smoky and floral at the same time - very lovely indeed (2174 views)
Tasted by kevin h on 9/21/2007 & rated 94 points: When Cote Rotie is as good as this I wonder why I bother drinking anything else. Youthful colour and at first a nice dense but simple nose of stewed plums and bacon fat but as it opens out over 2 hours in the decanter it becomes much more expressive - flowers, gravy, black pastills as well as the bacon and plummy fruit. Similarly delicious, complex flavours - dense and weighty. Sure, it lacks the polish of a top Guigal or Jamet wine but has a lovely juicy fruit and already shows lots of nuanced secondary flavours. A big burly wine but with a distinct floral quality too - especially on the nose - real lavendar. Great now but this would keep for 10 years. A real success. (2650 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

• The Appellation cover three communes - Saint-Cyr-sur-Rhône, Ampuis and Tupin-Semons - on the right Rhône river bank, within the Rhône "département".

• Soils : In the northern part of the vineyard, the Côte Brune, consists of extremely steep, terraced slopes of ferruginous mica schists which are covered with schist sand (arzel). The Côte Blonde has a varied geology with gneiss and granite predominating at the most southern side of the appellation.

• Climate : tempered continental. Dry, hot summers and frequent rainfalls during the other seasons. History : one of the oldest vineyards in France, first developed by the Romans. It is said that during the Middle Ages, "The Seigneur de Maugiron" bequeathed a hillside to each of his daughters, one was brunette and the other fair. Thus, were born the names of "Côte Brune" and "Côte Blonde".

• Area planted : 230 hectares (568 acres), for an annual production of 8,400 hectoliters (93,333 cases). Authorized maximum yield is 40 hectoliters/hectare (2,3 US tons/acre).

• Grape Varieties : Syrah (80% minimum). An addition of up to 20% of Viognier grapes in the crop is allowed.
