Tasted by Keith Cooper on 10/30/2023 & rated 90 points: Tasted with friends to accompany venison. I found this in a stock check and have no knowledge of how I acquired it, probably many years ago. But it has been kept in temperature controlled cabinet. So interesting to open it.

Decanted 30 minutes. It has kept well! Fully mature, the nose had plummy fruit. The palate is smooth and silky, slightly dusty. Plenty of red berry fruits and retaining good balance. Yes, it is well matured and probably past its peak. But still drinking well and very enjoyable. (403 views)
Tasted by havarhar on 8/6/2022 & rated 91 points: Rødorange farge.

Lukter av bløte, godt modne solbær.

Rød frukt. Akkurat passe med syre. Lite taniner. Velbalansert og smaken er godt integrerte. Sitter lenge igjen i munnen.

En meget god vin som har klart lagringen godt. (1254 views)
Tasted by Antoniusyh on 6/21/2021 & rated 88 points: Cork a bit infected with mold, but the wine still had lovely aromas of tar, wood and some fruit. Colour rather light wit slightly brown edge. Taste of mature wine, only smooth tannins left. Some discussions on whether there is bottle variation and this was more mature than others. Exciting to yeast the next bottle. Still a lovely wine.  Tasted by AudunG on 1/23/2021 & rated 86 points: Developed aromas with leather and some wood. Tight and stern with a dry finish. (2374 views)
Tasted by pernod on 12/25/2020 & rated 89 points: Deep red, orange edge, long thin drops appearance. Red fruit, undergrowth, mushroom, leather, wood aroma. Blackberry, vanilla, mushroom, leather taste. Ripe red fruit, mellow tannins, decent acidity. Nice food wine. Drink now. (2456 views)
Tasted by Toucha1970 on 11/14/2020: Pour fête de Raymonde 71 ans ! (2451 views)
Tasted by JChan on 10/26/2020 & rated 87 points: Drinking still nicely but down the hill within 2 hours. Don't cellar, drink now. (2046 views)
Tasted by frazer on 7/23/2020 flawed bottle: Not drinkable anymore, past due date with a couple of years. (1736 views)
Plaisant. (1593 views)
Tasted by JChan on 6/12/2020 & rated 88 points: A bit old this time. Just alright, easy to drink. (1547 views)
Tasted by Totemtom on 5/8/2020 & rated 90 points: Mørk dyp rød. Fat/eik, sødme, røde modne bær, kirsebær, plommekompott, krydder, litt syrlig stikk. Krydder, pepper, røde modne bær, kirsebær. Lang varm rund ettersmak, eik/taniner.

Kjøp tilsvarende. (1511 views)
Tasted by Henri-st on 4/28/2020 & rated 90 points: Decanted and aired 1 hr - got even better later in the evening. Rich dark fruit nose, earthy/wood. Dark with brick color at the edge. Taste is round and complex, tannins keeping it dry but flavors flow out - balanced acidity - dark cherry, some hint of spice (from oak?). Slurping and rolling the wine in your mouth is close to a Wow! - experience. Love this! (1505 views)
Tasted by Edzilla on 3/29/2020 & rated 88 points: Sjelden får man så mye moden Bordeaux for pengene.
Luftes i glasset. (1532 views)
Tasted by Jokofon on 3/24/2020 & rated 85 points: Good fruit concentration, ripe fruit, soft merlot texture, medium complexity, quite juicy, (1291 views)
Tasted by JChan on 2/14/2020 & rated 90 points: still very young, aromatic and energetic, if not mixed up with Chasse Spleen 2000 that night. (1434 views)
Tasted by _Alex_ on 2/2/2020 & rated 88 points: Servert til entrecôte. (1101 views)
Tasted by Joachim A on 12/13/2019 & rated 89 points: Velutviklet, fortsatt bra med frukt. (604 views)
Tasted by werner on 11/18/2019 & rated 90 points: Powerfull nose, promising notes of dark fruit, mushrooms and toasted wood. Delivers in the mouth, has that Bordeaux-freshness to it. Great ambassador of aged Bordeaux at an affordable price. (1737 views)
Tasted by Danneskjöld on 11/16/2019 & rated 88 points: Lær, treverk og moden frukt på duft.

Avslipte tanniner, men fremdeles med struktur. Moden frukt på smak. Middels god lengde med krydret utgang.

God QPR. Mye moden Bordeaux for prisen. Over forventning. (1527 views)
Tasted by HallvardE on 11/2/2019 & rated 89 points: Farge: dyp lilla-rød
Duft: noe animalsk, mineraler, lær,
Smak: medium tanniner, balanserte, medium friskhet og fylde, hint hav sopp/kjeller, lakris, litt fat i ettersmaken, lang ettersmak.
Mat: Fremhevet smaken til blå- /grønnmuggelost. Ok med brente mandler
Nøytral til brie
Kræsj med chevre (noen syre i smaken i osten) (1630 views)
Tasted by Edzilla on 10/27/2019: Trenger en del luft for å åpne seg.
Smaker sterkt av grønn paprika. Stor fylde og lang ettersmak. Tipper denne er på topp nå.
Ingen stor vin i mine øyne. (1561 views)
Tasted by Derek Darth Taster on 10/8/2019 & rated 92 points: Quickie afternoon sip at ESBK. Aired in bottle for about 1.5+ hours already before I tasted. Drank in Riedel stemless. Tasted blind.
Appearance is clear, medium intnesity, ruby colour with garnet edge. Legs.
Nose is not clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of barnyard funk, horse saddle, grilled animal meat, leather, earth. Developed.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium- alcohol (12.5%), mildly sticky velvet high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of red plum, ripe red cherries, leather, earth, grilled herbs, grilled animal meat, some gravelley stones minerality. Long finish.
Very good quality. I could be rating higher because I like bretty funk, just so you know. I was initially thinking Languedoc Carignan blend, but then the alcohol is not that high and excluding the funk, it does feel kinda classic. I guessed an aged Graves Bordeaux in the end.
Time to drink up and enjoy this classic claret.
80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc. (1802 views)
Tasted by oboeurenius on 7/29/2019 & rated 88 points: Chateau Simard 2000. Great year for Bordeaux. Nicely prized this one. Drank It with a steak of lamb. Nice combo. (1465 views)
Tasted by AudunG on 7/8/2019 & rated 84 points: Ruby red. Nicely developed Merlot aromas, but quite rustique with some green notes. A bit coarse and short on the palate. (1470 views)
Tasted by preid on 6/29/2019 & rated 89 points: Really nice good value St Emilion. Perfect age to drink. Dark brownish color. Smell of Black currant and dark berries. Balanced wine with medium length. (165 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Saint Emilion Grat Classified Growth, Classified Growths, Grands Crus Classes, GCC

In 1954, while the "Graves" growths had just published their own classification, the wine syndicate of Saint-Emilion, composed by wine growers, brokers and wine traders with the approval of the INAO - Institut National des Appellations d'Origine (A.O.C), decided to work on a classification for the wines of Saint Emilion. Initially, four grades were defined. These were reduced to two - First Great Classified Growth (A and B) and Great Classified Growth - in 1984.

As of Medoc's 1855 historical grading, the Saint-Emilion Great Classified Growth classification is not only based on qualitative criteria by tasting the wines on a ten years period previous to the assessment, but also on commercial considerations such as:
- sales price levels
- national and international commercial distribution
- the estate's reputation on the market

Properties who don't manage to join the club of about sixty Classified Growths are given the denomination of Great Growth ("Grand Cru"), while the remaining wineries of the A.O.C are simply reported as "Saint-Emilion". It is to be noted that the owners must officially apply to appear in the official classification. Thus for example the famous Chateau Tertre-Roteboeuf, whose quality and reputation would easily justify to be listed among the First Great Classified Growths, does not appear here by the will of its owner, François Mitjaville.

The Saint-Emilion Great Growth classification was revised in 1969, 1985, 1996 and 2006. The only two guaranteed vintage (A.O.C) who can apply to the classification are the "Saint-Emilion Grand Cru" and "Saint-Emilion" areas.

By grading 61 properties, the 2006 revision confirmed many growths from the former classification, but also caused a number of surprises and a few inevitable disappointments. Many observers thought that the impressive progression of Perse's Chateau Pavie since 1998 would be rewarded by an upgrade into the First Great Classified Growths (A) category, but finally such was not the case.

Among the estates promoted to the First Great Classified Growths B category are Chateau Troplong-Mondot and Pavie-Macquin, whose efforts made since the Nineties fully justify their new grade. It should be noted that no First Great Classified Growth was relegated to the lower Great Classified Growth class.

Promoted growths from the status of Great Growth ("Grand Cru") to Great Classified Growth ("Grand Cru Classe") are: Chateaux Bellefont-Belcier, Destieux, Fleur Cardinale, Grand Corbin, Grand Corbin-Despagne and Monbousquet.

The demoted growths from the status of Great Classified Growth to Great Growth are: Chateaux Bellevue, Cadet Bon, Faurie de Souchard, Guadet Saint-Julien, La Tour du Pin-Figeac (Belivier), La Tour du Pin-Figeac (Moueix), Lamarzelle, Petite Faurie de Soutard, Tertre Daugay, Villemaurine and Yon-Figeac. If the recent samples of some of the above mentioned properties may justify their current downgrade, there are great chances that estates like Bellevue, Tertre Daugay or Yon-Figeac will be upgraded to their previous rankings by the next revision in 2016 as the progresses noted after 2000, but not entering in the range of vintages (1993 - 2002) appointed for the criteria of selection for the 2006 classification, are noticable.

The two following estates have completely disappeared from the Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classification: Curé-Bon-la-Madeleine (integrated meanwhile to Chateau Canon) and La Clusière (integrated meanwhile to Chateau Pavie).

Finally, no estate considered as "garagiste" has integrated the classification. Valandraud, Mondotte, Le Dome, Bellevue-Mondotte or Magrez-Fombrauge have, for the least, the potential to be ranked as Great Classified Growths. In sight of the very fine quality reached by the above mentioned estates in recent vintages as well as all the innovative wine making methods used by the "garagistes", it remains to be seen whether the authorities will dare to cross the line in 2016..?
