Community Tasting Notes (average 88.7 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 20 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by davergny on 8/22/2021 & rated 91 points: The structure is there for this to last many more years, but the fruit is a little porty at first. Eventually, it morphs into blackberry flavors, with herbs and espresso notes. Bold and powerful, but not heavy or sweet. Not so layered or long. Excellent effort for 2003, but I am not a fan of the vintage. (701 views)
Tasted by Geoff on 3/12/2019 & rated 92 points: Has aged well. Dark fruit, powerful, but now mollified. Tannins tamed. Some secondary notes, long finish. Very enjoyable. (1118 views)
Tasted by Raage on 11/19/2018 & rated 87 points: CSD
Décevant , pas a cause de sa maturité, bien contreblancée par la fraicheur, mais sa finale sur la planche est déplaisante …
Attaque mure, riche et dense, fruitée, mais ça deconne ensuite! (1265 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 10/9/2016 & rated 91 points: Monthly Tasting Group: Northern Rhone (Tilia, Mpls): Very dark red/purple color. Splash double decanted. Drank 1 glass over an hour. This also suffered from getting too warm in the restaurant, but at its peak, it had a nice freshness with very dark red berry fruits, blackberry liqueur, black cherry and plenty of savory, earthy and roasted character followed by anise and spice on the finish. It got more "cloudy" as it became warmer. The vintage character is there, and when cool it maintains correctness. (2554 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 1/25/2015 & rated 91 points: Dark in color, lush, round and concentrated, with intensity of flavor and ample notes of stone, licorice, ripe blackberry, smoke, espresso and herbs. (3332 views)
Tasted by 3daywinereview.com on 1/4/2014 & rated 88 points: Gravel, raspberries, minerals and earth. Medium finish. (2920 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 12/24/2013 & rated 92 points: Mostly French on Christmas Eve (Dave's, Mpls): Very dark red color. PNP, aerated into glasses. The nose has some nicely roasted meat, pancetta, very floral - roses, dried leaves, cassis, black cherry, spice. The palate is soft and elegant, nuanced, medium-full bodied, and balanced, roasted meat, cassis, pepper, spice, savory, glycerin, kirsch, very fine tannins and a long finish. I'd been waiting for some time to finally try this and it proved to be delightfully well worth the wait. Will update if any significant changes on day two. (2914 views)
Tasted by P&F on 12/16/2013 & rated 89 points: Decanted for a couple of hours and bottled to have later in the evening, as it was unyielding upon opening. I think this still has a while to go, as it opened up and filled out with the air we gave it. Lacking complexity but youthful, and pleasant with good length. Minty and plummy. Try again in 3-5 years.  Tasted by topherg3 on 3/8/2012 & rated 89 points: Dark, earthy fruit, big wine, I decanted for hours and it needed it. (3110 views)
Tasted by Abigailkb on 2/15/2012 & rated 86 points: This wine has probably peaked. The nose promises a lot with herbs and rubber and wood, but the finish is very short. Palette lacks acid structure you would expect, but still has some grip from the tannins. (2164 views)
Tasted by 3daywinereview.com on 11/11/2010 & rated 90 points: Minneapolis Wine Club does Worldwide Syrah: Pepper, spice, roasted meat and earth. Medium finish but nothing mind blowing. (3127 views)
Tasted by winegr on 4/7/2009: I don't know about this one. Tainted? (2549 views)
Tasted by ProfessorHTF on 2/11/2009 & rated 80 points: A disappointing stinker given the expectations I had. Not actually bad, but very hot and jammy...lacking the subtle and best Hermitage characteristics...glad it was marked down, would not have paid $75 for it. (2617 views)
Tasted by thirtyoneknots on 2/8/2009: Single Blind Syrah Showdown (Chateau Taylor): Coconut, mint, white fruits (apricot), some alcohol. Somewhat hot without having a 'cooked' character, not terribly integrated but I noted that it could possibly smooth out some with air or cellar time. I was definitely shocked and disappointed that this was the Hermitage, though Alex said it was sold to him with the caveat that it did not show characteristics of that famous hillside. 14% alcohol. (2697 views)
Tasted by beachnic on 9/25/2008 & rated 92 points: Decanted for 1 hour. Intensely aromatic nose of nose smokey meats and blackberries and slight vanilla.. Savory and with some petrol and pine on the end. Nice subtle oak in the empty glass. Very supple or round with little in the way of a hard edge. Nice acidity balances this full bodied Syrah out.

After more airtime the aromas pick up even more. Sweet and savory violets with pine. the acidity is integrating more with slight drying tannins at the end. Very elegant for a big Syrah. The intensity in smell of a Pax Syrah with the suppleness that the French do so well. Very nice. 92-93Pts.

After a few hours decant surprisingly got a little tannic at the end. (2199 views)
Tasted by win on 3/23/2007 & rated 93 points: Casual tasting at De Tapas (Dallas, Texas): Amazing aroma involving deep raspberries and black currants. Great complexity, that will eventually become more refined. As the night wore on, more of a hint of bacon fat and creosote in the background, which should come to the forefront with age. Young. 91-96 (3902 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

Hermitage

Guide to Hermitage wine Guide to Cote Rotie - Read about the Northern Rhone Valley

• The appellation stretches over 3 communes in the Drôme "département" : Tain-l'Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage and Larnage.

• The soils are a combination of granite with alluvial quaternary delta deposits, and, on the eastern side, Pliocene clay. This diversity explains the numerous different names given to vineyard plots within the appellation : Bessards, Greffieux, Méal, Roucoule, Beaumes, etc.

• The meso-climate provides shelter from the north winds, where the majority of the slopes is well exposed, facing south.

•The vineyards area adds up to 134 hectares/331 acres, with an annual production of 3,635 hectoliters. Authorized maximum yield is 40 hectoliters/hectare (2.3 US tons/acres).

• Grape varieties : Syrah (an addition of up to 15% of Marsanne or Roussanne is allowed).
