Tasted by PacoHigon on 4/28/2024: 30% Garnacha, 30% Monastrell, 20% Cinsault y 20% Syrah.
(465 views)

Tasted by La Sprezzatura on 3/18/2024: Beaucastel Tasting Wunderbrunnen Opfikon

general remarks:
the wines are in general more on the elegant side. red berric. high acidity. almost no wood (they only use 5000+ liters „foudres“) intermixed with some spices and flowery aromas. especially the older vintages gave me some "burgundy vibes". there was some bottle variation (some oxidative bottles), especially with some warmer and better rated vintages such as 1995 and 1999…
the younger the wines got the more similar they became and were hard to distinguish. also hard to tell where the younger vintages will end up in future. highlights were 1991 and 1996 (both 94 points).

in the cellar they use as low intervention as possible. every grape gets fermented on its own. they choose oxidative or reductive ageing for each grape separately according to the characteristics of the grape.
the chateau is owned and ran by the family perrin (7 ppl).

Tasting note Beaucastel 1999:
on the nose wet saw dust, maggi, sweat and oxidative.

maybe flawed. second bottle after 1995 that was overwhelmingly oxidative...

Tasted by ankitmehra on 3/3/2024 & rated 94 points: Having only ever had Château de Beaucastel young, I was excited to corkage this bottle at Balthazar in New York on Sunday evening. Drunk over two and a half hours, the wine evolved extremely well in the glass, proving to be an excellent example of mature Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The nose had a lot of the great qualities that I've come to enjoy from the Rhône valley, boasting scents of blackberries, tobacco, cedar and a light note of olive tapenade I usually associate with the Northern part of the region. The palate had a lot of fruit intact as the upfront possessed a medley of tart redcurrants, plum and dark cherries before the wine began to show its maturity in the mid-palate through notes of spices, chocolate and light licorice. The tannins were still very much present, creating a silkiness that was aided by the arrival of an herbaceous note on the finish. This wine felt like it was in a really good spot, balancing out the rusticity that comes out of maturity with the finesse of much of the fruit still being intact. Thoroughly enjoyable. (1021 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 2/29/2024: Compared to the 2000 Marcoux, this is surprisingly polished and sleek. A fresh, elegant style of Beaucastel with a red-fruited palate with a mineral finish. Possibly too young, this is a nice wine but not one that moves me much. At home with Per. (1140 views)
Tasted by KayB on 2/21/2024 & rated 93 points: strawberry, cranberry, oak, licorice, forest floor. Lasts so long with a great strawberry tangy aftertaste for like a minute plus. Gorgeous ruby color. Unfiltered. Velvety tannins. Nice and tart. Evolves in the glass. Decanted and drank slowly. Got tons more wet leaves as it sat. Might just be gaslighting myself but eventually either tea or herbs. This wine changed so much I can’t tell.

That being said, drink soon as I’m not sure how long it’ll continue to show this way. Tannins and acids are depleting. (1060 views)
Tasted by beatles on 12/31/2023 & rated 93 points: Intense and powerful, accent on the minerals here. Still (too young) judging from this bottle, tasted vis-a-vis the 2000, that initally is showing much softer, very much in sync with the vintage. Will wait at least a year for the next bottle of this.

Tasted by Wine Canuck on 12/13/2023 & rated 93 points: A Wednesday at Dave's place: [Tasted Double Blind] This pours light garnet in the glass with faint bricking. The nose is classical and elegant with olives, leather, animal fur, pepper, butchered lamb, red plum, saline, black tea, and some stewed cherry character. I think there could perhaps some faint Brett here. The palate is plummy with medium tannin and medium acid with some moderate but noted kirshy character. The finish is generally fairly fresh though does show a little bit of prune alongside wet hay, wet wood, and a touch of sunried tomato on the finish. To me this spoke of Chateauneuf du Pape which I successfully guessed but I did have this pegged as a tad older. I was glad to see this Beaucastel showing so well as I usually haven't thought very highly of Beaucastel from 1998 onward. (1806 views)
Tasted by liber on 11/27/2023 & rated 94 points: 17th of 24, splash decanted, perfect cork and level, again on top form as described in August note, plateau, no rush. F+ (18). (1526 views)
Tasted by DH90 on 11/1/2023 & rated 91 points: Medium deep garnet color with minimal rust at edges. Restrained fruit initially then moderately rich black raspberry fruit and saddle leather. After further aeration, seemed a little alcoholic and out of balance especially in comparison to the vibrant 2001 Beaucastel. Suspect that this is a little past peak and should be consumed soon. This was my last bottle fortunately. (1586 views)
Tasted by Tgood on 10/17/2023: Bottle 11 of 12 at 55F since acquisition on release.
Might be the best showing yet for this unheralded vintage. Evolved medium translucent ruby - distant fresh strawberry plum preserves on prominent garrigue aromas - lively peppery acid/tannin mouthfeel. Good stuff. (1751 views)

Tasted by liber on 8/19/2023 & rated 94 points: 16th of 24, decanted 20 minutes, perfect cork and level, on top form and even nicer than last bottle in 19, remarkably fresh and nuanced on bouquet and palate for a 99 CdP, very long and almost Burgundian in style, plateau, 10+ years. F+ (18)........WOTN pipping fine Vieux Donjon 01 and Northern Rhones Jasmin 03 and Fauterie 05. (1713 views)
Tasted by Zinluvr on 2/18/2023: Was greatly disappointed. It was brownish in color, acidic and seemed to have gone off. Not a great first experience with CdP. (2796 views)
Tasted by Eric on 1/29/2023: Never quite proper. Dried fruit. Fig compote. Perfect cork. Yet super tired. Oxidized. Fairly disappointing. There were tantalizing elements to this wine, but on the whole it seemed a bit disappointing and flawed. Dark. Brooding. Stern. (2943 views)
Tasted by beatles on 1/28/2023 & rated 93 points: Very local nose with both garrigue and darker spices. In the mouth plenty of sweet Grenache, yet it's not heavy, very elegant, almost Burgundian.

Tasted by ssouth on 1/14/2023 & rated 94 points: We tried a new Persian Lamb recipe

It has ground roasted walnuts as a thickener and pomegranate molasses as an intriguing ingredient. Red vs Purple onions as used
I cooked the lamb and Barb made a great basmati rice Tahdig
The finished disk is sprinkled with fresh pomegranate seeds, mint and cilantro
We made Raita

Wine.
1999 Chateau de Beaucastel Rouge. Alc 13.5%
Decanted 90 min
Still dark crimson colored
Nice earthy nose
Tart cherry, cranberry and underbrush. Still some grippy tannins. Bit of garrigue.
Nice rusticity
Not really showing the 24 yrs it has been in the bottle.
A fine CndP

Tasted by greedy on 12/23/2022 & rated 96 points: Had one of these a month ago and was disappointed. That must have been a bad bottle. Had again tonight and oh my god! Great. Barnyard funk on steroids with lots of fruit and great acidity

Silky tannins with very smooth finish. Lots of fruit left. (1497 views)
Tasted by chbeaumont on 12/8/2022 & rated 88 points: Browning; suppressed bouquet, dull, plodding; sturdy palate, meaty, substantial; finishes with a flourish, extended. (1439 views)

Tasted by TheGreenFrog on 10/31/2022 & rated 93 points: Decanted for an hour and served at 16 celsius (as recommended by the property). Nice fruit, fading a bit, but a slight touch of astringency means the balance is not perfect. Nevertheless a very nice bottle with none of the vegetal notes I had with a bottle previously. I will probably drink up my remaining three bottles over the next year or so. (1850 views)
Tasted by greedy on 10/31/2022 & rated 88 points: Nothing special. I have never had aged beaucastel. Was hoping for more as I have lots of younger vintages in my cellar.

Not as much barnyard funk as I would expect like younger in aged Brunello or aged bordeaux (1832 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 8/20/2022: Siggy's Annual BBQ (Chez Siggy & Jenny's Place, Mpls, MN): Small glass. The consensus was this was pretty tired. I have to agree, it comes off muted and dull with broodiness and muddled cherry fruits and garrigue. Maybe an off bottle, but the trajectory is concerning. NR. (2399 views)
Tasted by malbrecht on 8/8/2022 & rated 92 points: From Magnum. Lots of fruit on the front, featuring blackberry and boysenberry, transitioning to notes of earth and garrigue. Tannins were mostly resolved, and this had a nice balance. Still juicy, but with a nice funky finish. Paired well with rack of lamb for the opening of Dorkathon 2022. (1878 views)

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
