Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.4 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 98 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Goofienewfy on 12/18/2022 & rated 92 points: Hitting it’s stride and in the window. The wine is together with tannins integrated. Nose is plum, prunes, earth, and minerals. Taste is salt and dirt. Harmonious and drinkable. (770 views)
Tasted by Sperls on 4/19/2022 & rated 91 points: Surprisingly different experience than the notes below. Well integrated and aged CNDP with a great nose, resolved tannins, the fruit a blend of darker strawberry and herbs w a hint of prune, medium body and a somewhat short finish. In a nice drinking window that may not last for too long but not over the hill by any stretch. (1089 views)
Tasted by Verb on 2/28/2022 & rated 86 points: hot and stewed fruit - better than my last bottle, but still typical of the over-ripe 2007 CdPs - this bottle was drinkable with food, at least (1132 views)
Tasted by swade on 12/14/2020 & rated 84 points: Every time I open this I kick a score and note down the line. Last bottle. Still hot, with a stewed and porty gestalt. Ripe, black fruit and spices and a dried out finish. Time has not done this wine favors and rather exposed it a bit. Solar vintage for sure. 84 (1571 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 7/28/2020: Ruby. Licorice, garrigue, and blackberry. Chewy, savory, medium to full bodied wine. Classic big Chateauneuf palate with excellent mix of herbs, anise, and both black and dark red fruit. Really no surmaturité here. Lingering finish of soil, graphite, cocoa. Another in a recent run of 2007's that outperformed my expectations based upon early tastings of the vintage. Not hot or soupy as I feared. (2142 views)
Tasted by corkscrews on 7/22/2019 & rated 89 points: A nose of come cherry and spice, medium garnet in color. A medium to full bodied Red Rhone blend, with black cherry, raspberry, dust and spice on finish. A bit past it’s peak, drink now. www.winelx.com (1773 views)
Tasted by brooklynwine on 6/19/2019 & rated 88 points: BIG wine with ripe, stewed fruit. Blackberry, blueberry pie, and some spice. Lacking freshness, acidity. Kind of boring and one dimensional. Not my style. (1865 views)
Tasted by WineGuyX on 4/14/2019 & rated 88 points: Purchased at release. Not a lot of aroma which seems typical of 2007 CdP. Full bodied and rich. This is fine but boring and shows the over ripeness inherent to the ‘07s. Many will like this, but it’s not for me. Shows none of the funk of the previous bottle. Drink now-2021+. 88? (T says 93). (1648 views)
Tasted by jsherdc on 1/18/2019 & rated 93 points: Beautiful blueberry cherry and spice. Not hot. Very smooth. (1497 views)
Tasted by Winiac on 12/23/2018 & rated 92 points: Spicy and full of ripe fruit. Full bodies and thick. Flavorful but lacks focus. (1403 views)
Tasted by WineGuyX on 6/2/2018 & rated 88 points: Library release. Smells of old, wine-soaked wood and slightly of oxidation. I used to love this wine and it was one of the few 2007 CdPs I liked. I need to open a bottle that I purchased at release to see if there is a difference. Some kirsch liquor and spice. Sweet fruit with grilled herb switches. Plenty will love this, but there’s a muddled, unclean character I can’t shake. Not for me. 88? (1720 views)
Tasted by jsherdc on 11/25/2017 & rated 91 points: Coravin taste. Big boy. Nice with 30 minutes air. Blueberry and black pepper. (1705 views)
Tasted by WineGuyX on 10/29/2017 & rated 90 points: Library Release (I also have some purchased at release). This is now past its prime and starting to dry out. That said, it is still quite nice, and has some freshness left, if not an abundance of sweet fruit. Dried cherry and red apple skin as well as hints of lavender and rosemary. Savory umami and good acidity. Drink now. 90 (1669 views)
Tasted by Verb on 10/3/2017 & rated 83 points: brick with orange rim - burnt nose - stewed over-ripe fruit mouth - bitter aftertaste and hot alcoholic finish - was drinkable with food, which hid many of the flaws - but not at all pleasant by itself - not a good example of the 2007 Rhone vintage - the surprising diversity of comments about this wine leads me to expect there is significant bottle/case variation and I got one of the bad ones (1679 views)
Tasted by TexasBob on 6/15/2017 & rated 89 points: Dark cloudy violet. Rich Blueberries and charred wood on the nose. Similar tasting notes - blueberries and charred wood. Good match with spiced horseradish pork. More inter sting than good. (2158 views)
Tasted by OldwineinVT on 4/29/2017 & rated 92 points: Garagiste selection

Color: deep dark purple red

Nose: somewhat closed, but opened into a complex array of dried fruit; some black pepper notes

Body/flavor: medium to full body; rich complex; dried fruit with both pepper and sweetness. Well balanced

Aftertaste: lingering, delicious finish (1944 views)
Tasted by norsktorsk on 3/2/2017 & rated 92 points: Quite unctuous. Not my favorite by any means (1988 views)
Tasted by norsktorsk on 1/29/2017 & rated 90 points: Unctuous. (2049 views)
Tasted by CHINACAT on 1/27/2017 & rated 92 points: Subdued nose. Pleasantly sweet fruit, good acidity, medium body, silky, with a bit of remaining grip. Nicely balanced, unlike some of the other 2007's I've had, which can be a bit over the top. An excellent basic cuvee that is drinking well now, but should last several more years. (1897 views)
Tasted by TheBosWineGuy on 10/17/2016 & rated 91 points: HOS has it right. These '07s are big boys and very fruit driven but I really do think they have the structure to age as the ones I'm opening up now are so youthful. Maybe not a classic style but it sure is enjoyable. (1731 views)
Tasted by HOS on 10/10/2016 & rated 94 points: Opened for an hour before drinking. Wow, just wow. This just keeps getting better. The tannins have integrated leaving a full bodied, seamless wine of kirsch, herbs, earth. Probably at its best now but should hold for a few years. I'm disappointed that this is bottle 10 of the case as we obviously drank the others too early. Oh well. (1595 views)
Tasted by tadams66 on 10/2/2016 & rated 92 points: Wonderful. Opened for 1 hour. Had raisen, plum, and leather with integrated tannins. This is ready to drink. A couple more years left but fantastic now. (1490 views)
Tasted by Sotto325 on 6/19/2016 & rated 88 points: I am losing interest in the initially over hyped 2007 CDPs. This bottle follows many that have been overripe, raisiny, alcoholic and unbalanced. That is not surprising given some critics' and stores' propensities to advocate for those fruit forward early tastings.
Lots of briar, jammy center fruit, some hint of black pepper and a lack of elegance ,even after a good decant. (2094 views)
Tasted by hackey37 on 5/8/2016 & rated 93 points: The wine is dark garnet with lighter garnet at the rim and clear with a very slight haze. The smells are plum, blackberry, cherry, and beautiful floral aromatics. The tastes are black cherry, pepper, garrigue, blackberry, plum, dark chocolate, espresso, and cedary notes. Complex with velvety tannins, good acidity, and a lengthy finish. (1750 views)
Tasted by HOS on 3/2/2016 & rated 93 points: Pnp. Initially, some heat which resolved over the first hour. Then it was kirsch, herbs, earth. Full bodied, long finish, well integrated. Just a great bottle. Unfortunately, this seems to have strong bottle variation as my bottle 3 months ago was significantly weaker than this showing. I don't see much upside here but suggest a short decant to start. (1961 views)

(Paul Autard Chateauneuf du Pape) #1; COLOR-dark; NOSE-big and dark; raspberry and strawberry; a little tight, but dark; PALATE-the is really good; this has firm tight tannins and will last 12-20 years; this needs a big steak or a roast as this is a very tannic and tight, structured wine; should probably be cellared for at least 3-4 years; a well made wine with a gorgeous backbone; this is very good wine for only $33 bones; WS-93; GV-93  93 points

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
