| Community Tasting Notes | | Tasted by graemeg on 10/6/2006: Yarra Wineries visit (Coldstream, Yarra): A$35. Aged cedar and briary aromas. Small red berry fruits on the palate, but with some harsh astringency. Medium length finish but seems like a wine which is past its best. Odd to find it still on sale at the cellar door… (1787 views) | | Tasted by graemeg on 6/17/2005: Dusty mulberry and mild plums, soft tannins and attractively faded red fruits. Faintly coconut oak is discreet. Mid weight, yet beautifully balanced. Needs no apologies. From a wine list, and prompted by Stuart Gregor's comment in the Murdoch press in May. A very good wine, and indeed not requiring the "for a merlot" postscript to any compliments. Will live longer, but at peak now, I think. Much more satisfactory than a rather charry and hot 2003 d'Arenberg Footbolt Shiraz consumed afterwards, which was crude and simple in comparison. (1215 views) |
| Coldstream Hills Producer website
Founded by the author, James Halliday, Coldstream Hills is now a small part of Treasury Wine Estates, with 100ha of owned estate vineyards as its base, three in the Lower Yarra Valley and two in the Upper Yarra Valley. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir continue to be the principal focus; Merlot came on-stream in 1997, Sauvignon Blanc around the same time, Reserve Shiraz later still. Vintage conditions permitting, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are made in Reserve, Single Vineyard and varietal forms (at three price levels). In addition, Amphitheatre Pinot Noir was made in tiny quantities in 2006 and 2013. In 2010 a multimillion-dollar winery was erected around the original winery buildings and facilities; it has a capacity of 1500 tonnes. There is a plaque in the fermentation area commemorating the official opening on 12 October 2010 and naming the facility the "James Halliday Cellar". Exports to the UK, the US and Singapore. Author: James HallidayMerlotMerlot is a dark blue–colored wine grape variety, that is used as both a blending grape and for varietal wines. The name Merlot is thought to be a diminutive of merle, the French name for the blackbird, probably a reference to the color of the grape. Its softness and "fleshiness", combined with its earlier ripening, makes Merlot a popular grape for blending with the sterner, later-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon, which tends to be higher in tannin.Australia Wine Australia (Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation) | Australian Wines (Wikipedia)Victoria Wines of Victoria (Victorian Wine Industry Association)Yarra Valley Wine Yarra Valley (Yarra Valley Wine Growers Association) |
