Community Tasting Notes (average 89.4 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 37 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by PrinceKyrris on 1/1/2020 & rated 90 points: Last bottle. Golden colored with fine bubbles. Yeast on nose. Definitely showing its age. Creamy mouthfeel with bright acidity and hints of dough, lemon, and mineral. The finish is not as long as previous bottles but that is expected. Drink up as this is nearing the end. Lovely champagne for the money. (1121 views)
Tasted by The Drunken Cyclist on 9/17/2018 & rated 94 points: I read my last note (which still applies). I strongly believe that those who give scores on Cellar Tracker that are "sub-standard" really don't get it and they should not be allowed to drink older champagne. My wife says I am being a complete jerk (my word, not hers, which was much stronger), but listen: it's not for everyone. Leave it for me. thedrunkencyclist.com (1579 views)
Tasted by PrinceKyrris on 8/17/2018 & rated 93 points: This was delicious. Nose of Fuji apple, almond paste, and slight yeast. With some air the aromas deepened with dough, caramel, and marzipan. Lovely golden color with decent bubbles left. These did dissipate as time passes but did not detrwxmct from drinking pleasure. Rich mouthfeel, almost creamy. Still vibrant and very good. Showed no signs of being over the hill. Served with mini crab cakes as an appetizer to a meal that included a 2001 Joseph Phelps Insignia and a 1986 Chateau Margaux. (1571 views)
Tasted by americanstorm on 6/13/2018 & rated 90 points: This had a really strange nose or I would have scored it higher. Apple and a hint of almond, perhaps a touch of honey. Great mouse and long finish. Great QPR, except for the strange nose. (1827 views)
Tasted by The Drunken Cyclist on 10/23/2017 & rated 94 points: Reading through some of the tasting notes here on Cellar Tracker, I realize a rather poignant fact: some people should not be allowed to drink vintage champagne. If that sounds elitist, I apologize, but many clearly don’t get it. Older vintage champagne often loses some of its sparkle, it often starts to taste a bit oxidized, and yes, the fruit is faded, but those are precisely the elements that make older vintage champagnes so fantastic. This was a touch golden but nothing severe but the nose is serious: cooking brioche just before you take it out of the oven. Whoa. On the palate toasted croissant and lemon curd. Holy cow. I seem to say it all the time but THIS is why I hold on to vintage champagne. Whoa. (2080 views)
Tasted by DragonChowhound on 7/3/2017 & rated 86 points: Past its time, loses effervescence nearly immediately. Overall, a nice tasting glass, but the lack of bubbles is obvious.

Might be an opportunity to try making that champagne sorbet though... (1738 views)
Tasted by Neecies on 5/15/2017: Too old (passively stored), flattens out pretty fast in the glass. (1474 views)
Tasted by scobrown on 12/9/2016 & rated 92 points: Very drinkable but not too plain. Slightly sweet, mostly peach and honey rather than apple. Not toasty. Drink on a summer day at a cafe (or when you want to pretend you are). (1759 views)
Tasted by physicsfan3.14@gmail.com on 11/17/2016 & rated 91 points: Fantastic, perfectly aged, complex vintage Champagne. My gosh, this was a good bottle. Notes of brioche, orange peel, toasted almond, and marzipan. There were plenty of fine, tiny bubbles - but this wasn't the vigorously bubbling youthful wine that many expect with champagne. This was a champagne with age and dignity, and it was delicious. (1566 views)
Tasted by Vino Me on 11/6/2016 & rated 87 points: Medium gold color. Lighter bead with notes of apples and citrus with some sherry notes. Showing its age. Drink now. 87 points. (1736 views)
Tasted by The Drunken Cyclist on 3/13/2016 & rated 92 points: I bought these a few years ago from Wine Library for $30--a bargain, for sure. Montaudon has long been one of my favorite champagnes for a couple of reasons. First, it is more of a Pinot Noir dominant wine, given it more body and oomph (putting it right in my wheelhouse). Second, it is a co-operative, which for some reason makes it more appealing. And third it is really good. Added to all of that, this is a vintage, which typically is at least a notch above the standard Brut. And it is. A golden hue with slightly oxidized biscuity goodness on the nose and on the palate? This is exactly what I hoped it would be: rich, slightly citrusy, and plenty of brioche. Outstanding. thedrunkencyclist.com (1750 views)
Tasted by scott w on 10/13/2015 & rated 89 points: Nice red and green apples, good acidity, hints of oxidation a little short on the finish. Overall enjoyable. QPR (2289 views)
Tasted by americanstorm on 10/4/2015 & rated 90 points: Nice champagne, long finish, nice nose, still drinking very well. Found the flavors quite pleasent but I am not very good at putting names to them. Just a very enjoyable bottle of bubbly. Reasonable price. (1896 views)
Tasted by beezer6 on 9/22/2015 & rated 90 points: Taste with Glunz.
Apple juice, anise, herbs. Darker robust. Nice finish. (1896 views)
Tasted by mrmikemtr on 8/30/2015 & rated 88 points: Delicious. A bit sweet. Citrusy. Glad I have 1 more! (1879 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 8/11/2015 & rated 89 points: Consistent with previous note, but +1 for more complexity than other bottles. You can do worse in champagne, but you can also do a lot better. This bottle had some oxidation, and all bottles have tasted a bit elderly. (1668 views)
Tasted by Momus99 on 5/24/2015 & rated 86 points: The oxidized note is strong enough that it distracts from the rest of the qualities of the wine. Might be for some but not for me so much. (1482 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 3/21/2015 & rated 88 points: Consistent with previous note. Showing it's age. Not as complex as I would like from a 2002 champagne. Still quite good, if slightly overpriced. (1711 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 3/8/2015 & rated 88 points: A lot to like here, and some to dislike.

A pale gold color. The nose is fully mature with a definite oxidation note. On the palate, it doesn't seem to have the frame to supports its age. Hardly any fruit, significant oxidation, lean, almost medicinal. Nonetheless, I like old whites/burgs/champagne and oxidation. I didn't mind this bottle, but frankly it reminded me more of grabbing something way too old from the bargain bin at a wine shop. for $5. It's probably too old, but nice to enjoy the nuance of old age, even if it isn't very satisfying. Unfortunately, in this case, I paid $30 which seems to be less than the average around here. This doesn't drink like a $30 anything. (1801 views)
Tasted by Jay Win on 12/19/2014: Drinking very well now and a great buy at $30. Solid A. (1963 views)
Tasted by Momus99 on 10/12/2014 & rated 89 points: I am not an expert in vintage Champagne, and in fact this is my first time drinking one over 10 years old. That said, I found a lot to like here. Depth and layers of nuance with a long finish. The color is a moderate gold, the nose has a distinct oxidized, sherry-like note along with toast and green grass, and the palate is very balanced. It paired very nicely with mushroom risotto and lemon-caper chicken breast. (2146 views)
Tasted by ericindc on 1/21/2014 & rated 92 points: Excellent Champagne. Slightly "darker" nose with rich pear, brown apple, nose with a light touch of caramel. Amazing richness of flavor, great mature characteristics of browned apple, pear, slight breadiness, light hazlenut . Finish goes on and on. Really, really nice, and amazing QPR. (3085 views)
Tasted by The Drunken Cyclist on 9/13/2013 & rated 92 points: We had this after the NV Mailly Rosé. This more than held its own--great, vibrant nose, which included considerable yeast and yumminess. On the palate, this was Outstanding--richness, depth, and a great finish. Not much more you can ask for in a champagne. thedrunkencyclist.com (2987 views)
Tasted by vanpe003 on 11/10/2012 & rated 90 points: A lighter, livelier style than the '97 Bollinger Grand Annee. Some preferred this one as a result. Which I think speaks highly to its value / QPR. (3378 views)
Tasted by The Drunken Cyclist on 11/9/2012 & rated 91 points: This was a lot better than the bottle that we had last week. Peach and citrus on the nose with some nice butter croissant on the finish. An extremely active mousse and nice acidity make me think that it may have even been too young! Outstanding. (2997 views)

France - When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of consistent quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. Sub-Region:

Champagne - The French region of Champagne (including the cities of Rheims, Épernay, and Aÿ) was the first region in the world to make sparkling wine in any quantity. Today, the name of the region is synonymous with the finest of all sparkling wines, and wine-making traditions of Champagne have become role models for sparkling wine producers, worldwide. Surprisingly, the region of Champagne is now responsible for only one bottle in 12 of all sparkling wine produced. Styles of champagne range in sweetness ranging from an extra brut or brut 0, to the basic brut to demi sec to doux; some houses produce single vintage champagnes and others produce non-vintage (or incorporate wines/grapes of multiple vintages), often to preserve a specific taste; combinations of grape varietals; and colors, including a rosé. There are several sub-appellations, including the Valley of the Marnes river running from Épernay west, Massif de Saint-Thierry north and west of Rheims, Valley of the Ardre, the Mountains of Rheims (between Rheims and Épernay), Côte des Blancs, Côte de Sézanne, and Côte des Bar in the South. Champagne wine only uses three grape varietals (cépages): Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier.
