Tasted by Rbhan12 on 3/2/2024 & rated 94 points: Agree with prior notes this is a very classy wine. Gunsmoke and red fruit with lovely gravel underneath. Drinking beautifully with 20-30min in the glass. (358 views)
Tasted by Purple Tooth on 10/22/2023 & rated 94 points: This is a very classy pape clement. It’s one of those wines that gets you scratching the head and wondering if the bottle is mis labeled. Very suave, this was quite Margaux like and was throwing allot of beautiful tones of violet, earth, and blood. Really dry and perfect in balance, it held its own after a most beautiful 2009 carre. This is classic Bordeaux. Ready, Drink! (971 views)
Tasted by egoya on 10/1/2023 & rated 90 points: Expected better from a Pape Clement. Quite nice to drink, but had lots of less renowned wines doing better. Will not improve. (643 views)
Tasted by vinhonotte on 7/14/2023 flawed bottle: 2004 Horizontal Dinner (Tunglok Peking Duck Novena): Deep inky ruby. Really very fruity on the nose, but seems to have been masked by a dank basement feel. The palate does have that fungal character along with ripe fruits. But have chosen not to rate this as it is indeed cork-tainted and not showing at its best (585 views)
Tasted by pavel_p on 7/12/2023 & rated 93 points: Slow ox’ed for about 1h. 6 years since my last bottle this was again showing really well. Still a dark garnet but the oak that might have seemed a bit rich in its youth has been nicely absorbed in the meantime. With a medium (+) body clearly more fruit than a 07 Leoville Barton that followed. Just great classic Bdx. (1044 views)
Tasted by Chrysostomus on 3/28/2023 & rated 91 points: good, but not extraordinary. had the 2002, the 2003 and now this. Every vintage has its own character, completely different. The 2003 was far above the others. 2004 is in good shape, will last easily for another decade, but lacking the "wow" effect. Didn't change much from PnP till the next day. A bit one-dimensional, lacking complexity but had a good structure, black fruit on the palate. Will wait a few years for the next bottle to see, if there is improvement.. (1042 views)
Tasted by jyensan on 7/18/2022 & rated 94 points: Outstanding. Dark fruit, earth and tobacco. Perfectly balanced with great acidity and tannin structure. Drank over several hours and it never faded. One bottle left and I look forward to it. (1484 views)
Tasted by CamWheeler on 11/17/2021 & rated 91 points: SLDS November 2021: Blackcurrant, earth, spices, blackberry and leather on the nose. Drinking well now - medium intensity and depth without any rough edges to it. In a good spot. (1534 views)
Tasted by Ct Bordeaux on 8/23/2021 & rated 94 points: This was a wow! Dark in color, with a floral nose and deep flavors. Most impressive was the depth of the fruit and the typical Pessac characters of smoke and earth. It was equally good with or without food. (2460 views)
Tasted by NY Wino on 5/9/2021 & rated 91 points: Good fruit, relatively smooth tannins and nice pleasant finish. (2508 views)
Tasted by vinhonotte on 1/27/2021 & rated 91 points: Deep ruby, and slight fading pinkish edge. Aromas of roses, bit of ripe cassis, and cinnamon, liquorice, and a bit of graphite. Rounded tannins, a savoury attack, medium ripe cherry and green herbs, cloves, paprika, then a dark floral, liquorice and tar at the back. Fair length and complex finish. Pretty nice (2674 views)
Tasted by Eclectic Palate on 1/4/2021 & rated 93 points: Purchased 4 bottles at winebid back in 2012 and this was the second bottle of the 4; held in temperature conrolled storage. Cork in pristine shape and it was apparent based upon the aromas from the pour into the decanter that this is a representative example of a properly stored bottle. An hour later my first sips left me impressed as this is a 2004 that is showing cherry like and other dark fruit flavors combined with savory earthy flavors. Acid was in proper balance, and the tannins were mostly dissapated after the decant. No noticeable touch of oak which is typically a concern that I have with Pape. My first sips left me quite impressed as there was enough fruit in general that this Bordeaux did not cry out immediately for food or cheese. Paired well with the main course of a (Philly) garlic roll cheesesteak wit fried onions from Santuccis. (Perhaps this is shocking, but I have found that Bordeaux pairs incredibly well with the higher quality Philly cheasesteaks, which means not Pat's or Geno's.) No tertiary components were evident in this bottle as it's clearly at the top range of the bell curve of drinakability. I agree with others who think the wine will be its best up through 2022 or 2023, although it certainly will drinkwell beyond that time period but showing more tertiary components which I tend to appreciate in Pessacs. I you enjoy Pessacs I think it's a smart buy if you can pick up any properly stored bottles for up to $100. (2376 views)
Tasted by PMJak11 on 11/7/2020 & rated 96 points: 1hr decant. One of the best smelling corks ever! Dark red color. Classic Bordeaux nose of earth, cedar, smoke, and massive floral elements. One of the deepest wines I’ve ever had. Dark cherry, flowers, and tar on the palate. Medium plus finish. Who said 2004 was an off year? This was awesome! (2493 views)
Tasted by Tauro on 5/20/2020 & rated 92 points: A great wine from a difficult year.
The nose is as expected smokey, tobacco and pencil shavings.
Hints of black cherry, ash, tobacco, leather, cedar and vanilla.
A very complex and intense wine, full bodied and balanced.
This 2004 Pape Clement has a long finish and left me with an aftertaste of menthol and undergrowth (sous-bois).
Certainly not the best year, making it a fairly expensive wine for what you get.
Big difference from the 09 vintage.
I would drink this vintage no later than 2022.

Tasted by Handy1 on 4/30/2020 & rated 91 points: Nose better than taste. Smells of pencil shavings dark fruit and menthol. Taste of black fruit but ends in some astringency and tannins. Probably still could go another few years with benefit (2037 views)
Tasted by farinas on 4/24/2020 & rated 92 points: A charming Claret with plenty of the typical flavors of dark berries, pencil shavings, and soft resolving tannins. The vintage is not favorable and hence the balance is a bit off and lacks real depth but quite pleasing to drink. Mature already so drink up.
Disclaimer the cork broken in half while opening. (1842 views)
Tasted by martin_e on 3/6/2020 & rated 95 points: I believe 2004 Brdx is generally under-appreciated and some wines clearly under-valued. A case in point is Pape Clement: very aromatic, tons of black fruit, balanced... actually, bears a strong resemblance to Pomerol (1870 views)
Tasted by dnnk88 on 12/27/2019 & rated 93 points: Black fruits, vanilla, tobacco, eucalyptus. Nice and long menthol finish. So consistent - Pape Clement is one of my favorites. Whilst the 2004 is not a strong expression, it is still a very good bottle. Enjoyed this tonight. Open now (1936 views)
Tasted by ricard on 5/29/2019 & rated 93 points: Serious. Huge nose of cocoa and fudge and eucalyptus and cedar. Intense acidity and soft tannins, but too oaky on the finish for me. Good but hardly devastating. Why people go nuts over this stuff completely eludes me. (2538 views)
Tasted by Bugiman on 2/9/2019 & rated 95 points: Perfect drinking window, Great Balance! (2430 views)

Tasted by G_H on 11/21/2018 & rated 90 points: Red bell peppers, sweet corn, black cherries, cassis (2591 views)
Tasted by Chefofthewoods on 7/27/2018 & rated 93 points: Impressive wine. One of my first experiences with cellared bordeaux this 2004, and WOW. 30 min decant, then Cedar on the nose with minerality; its scent was beguiling. Beautiful garnet color, no brick from oxidation. Beautiful cherry-raspberry flavor, acidity, and balance. And that cedar. Blown away!
I regret foolishly leaving a glasses worth in the bottle for 2nd day because the nose was lost. Drink it up. (2866 views)
Tasted by VinVet on 7/20/2018 & rated 92 points: Classic cassis, forest floor and leafy. Well balanced fruit, acidity and tannins. (2476 views)
Tasted by tmoritz1 on 5/21/2018 & rated 93 points: Deep claret color- Nose of fig and dried plus. Notes of pepper .Smooth and silky texture. Medium finish. Delightful wine (2571 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman
