| Community Tasting Notes (average 93 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 5 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by glou.sf on 1/22/2022 & rated 95 points: Lovely, mature Riesling nose that maintains a surprising amount of freshness. Deep and complex flavors of peach and honey, with a citrus note and some tertiary flavors. Medium acidity on the palate with lovely depth of flavors and notes of more stone fruit and citrus with good weight. Long finish. A fantastic wine and experience! (461 views) | | Tasted by pomerol on 12/21/2012 & rated 93 points: Tasted blind originally thought is was older Chardonnay but on second guess thought it was Gruner. Very unusual combination of laser crisp entry and leesy creamy finish. Overall a really interesting wine. From the time before Samaragd came into existance. (1868 views) | | Tasted by AndrewSGHall on 8/1/2006: Petrol and sweat on the nose. Very rich, oily and unctous with a slickness. Some acids in there to balance. Thickness and alcohol give an illusion of sweetness. Clean finish with bitter marmalade notes. Definite class here. (2418 views) | | Tasted by psmith on 8/1/2006 & rated 91 points: Dinner with friends (My house): Pure, petrol fumes and natural aromas of fresh cut grass, honeyed peach and apricot, and white flowers. Mature, weighty palate well supported by a vibrant acidity and minerality. No signs of decline. Beautiful wine, and very Nikolaihof in style. (3081 views) |
| Nikolaihof Producer website
Please note that while most wines of this Wachau producer are from that region, there is one property (Steiner Hund) that is actually in the Kremstal, and so is ineligible for the nomenclature used on Wachau wines. The Steiner Hund wine (one of Nikolaihof's top wines) has been variously described over the years as a Trockener Riesling Spätlese or a Riesling Trocken Reserve. The region 'Wachau' on Steiner Hund wines are incorrect--it should be 'Kremstal', but I'm having trouble changing it. Anyone help with this?
The wines are now produced biodynamically.
This former monastery in Mautern is now owned by the Saah family, who also serve their exquisite biodynamic fare in an onsite restaurant, an ideal place for a visit while in the valley spending a warm evening out under the ancient Imperial Linden tree in the courtyard, tasting wine, eating, and being regaled with Christine Saah's wonderful hospitality, close to heaven on earth for such as we. Highly recommended and a superb producer. jhtRiesling Varietal character (Appellation America) | A short history of Riesling (Uncork) | Riesling (wikipedia)Spätlese trocken WikipediaAustria Wein aus Österreich (Österreichischen Weinmarketinggesellschaft) | Austrian Wine Classifications (Winemonger.com)Niederösterreich Weinstraße Niederösterreich
Lower Austria Wine Region
Lower Austria isn't "southern" Austria, but rather northeastern. It derives its name from its downriver location on the Danube River, which flows from west to east.Wachau Official tourism website on weinlagen-info |
