Community Tasting Notes (average 92.3 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 30 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by ubercuvee on 8/22/2021: Slightly funky, again not showing too much weight - an elegant hermitage. (1781 views)
Tasted by vinero on 5/14/2021 & rated 93 points: From a Magnum. At opening there was a sharp, acid taste in the wine, that I took for being slightly corked. But it got less during the evening. Instead a complex palate of plum, leather and herbs popped up. On day 2 a bit softer and the acid backbone was completely gone. Overall a very good wine, quite mature/tertiary, so not suited for every guest. But we loved it. 93p. (1584 views)
Tasted by ubercuvee on 12/13/2020: Really transparent and Burgundian, a complete contrast to an '01 Guigal ex-voto alongside
I'd drink these now (1840 views)
Tasted by dnnk88 on 11/27/2020 & rated 93 points: End Nov Wine Night @ GWC!: Les Bessards has been very volatile for me, but this bottle was on point tonight! Enticing red fruits, cherries, slight tinge of barnyard. Quite burgundian. I have been impressed by the 2001 Rhones so far! Open up (1777 views)
Tasted by Edouard84 on 8/10/2020 & rated 94 points: Perfect Hermitage at peak (from magnum).
Very Burgundian in style after 19 years, with more bacon and smoky notes. (1875 views)
Tasted by whitmanlholt on 4/28/2018 & rated 92 points: Popped and poured. This is a lighter-red wine with some fine-grained sediment toward the end of the bottle. The nose is great!! I get scents of pepper, bacon, scorched meat fat, and ash. In the mouth, this is a medium-weight wine with some woodsy overtones and a spicy finish. Overall, this is a distinctive wine that is in a great spot now. Drink and enjoy! 92 points. (2177 views)
Tasted by ubercuvee on 4/25/2018 & rated 95 points: This bottle was a little lighter bodied than my last and as such it came across as a little insubstantial. Lovely perfume though - an Hermitage for burg lovers! (2136 views)
Tasted by ubercuvee on 3/19/2018 & rated 99 points: Pristine European Stock (at 67 Pall Mall). Spectacular! Floral with plenty of iron flavours, and the whole package held together with Burgundian (ie minimal) thickness and weight. Home run (2139 views)
Tasted by Enfantterrible on 5/24/2015 flawed bottle: Difficult to rate because it might have been ever so slightly corked. Great material though. Everyone enjoyed it, but I detected a bit of dusty closet on the mouth and nose. (3859 views)
Tasted by wino from way back on 2/13/2015: If you have not yet consumed your 2001, drink it now (2015). It has started to turn. Slight hint of vinegar. Much lighter taste that described on other reviews. Drinking window is closing or closed. Your bottle's mileage may differ. (3827 views)
Tasted by mrfroopy on 1/1/2015 & rated 70 points: Bad Bottle. I bought on a deal when I worked at a wine website.. they must have gotten if from someone who cooked it.. was cooked for sure.. raisny, dull and forloron.. was good for a second then fell apart.. what a shame.. brought to a nice rest for NYE dinner. Oh well that's wine.
Luckily the restaurant had a great wine list.. we had Corniellison wines instead. (3237 views)
Tasted by whitmanlholt on 6/8/2014 & rated 93 points: Popped and poured. This is a moderate red wine with some lightening toward the rim – it is far lighter than I expected. There is some mild sediment toward the end of the bottle. On the nose, there is meat/meat fat, briar patch, and blackberry. The nose is great, although the color and odor together leave the impression of drinking blood. In the mouth, the wine is sweet, structured, and chewy, and it leavings a lingering herbal sense. Overall, this is very enjoyable, although the nose is the best attribute; the wine is drinkable now, but undoubtedly will continue to age well. A solid buy at $74/bottle. 93 points. (3484 views)
Tasted by beatles on 4/11/2014 & rated 95 points: Having tasted this from magnum a year or so ago, I thought it was time to pop the first one of my own (75 cl) bottles; good choice. While still young, this is certainly starting to open up, and is actually, right if the mark, somewhat of a smooth operator for en hermitage and especially for a 2001. The darkness of Les Bessards rings through, and this is certainly your masculine image of hermitage with smoked meat, olives & garrigue galore, but don't miss the elegance and the harmony, that is here. Will live for 10 years, sans problems, but no sin to drink it now. (3718 views)
Tasted by placecarnot on 5/16/2013 & rated 90 points: Not as good as the bottle we had in Paris recently, but still very good. More advanced here. Fully evolved, won't go over the hill within the next 10 years, but not sure it will get much better. Delicious Syrah tonight. (2900 views)
Tasted by globi on 9/23/2012 flawed bottle: essentialy dead (probably heat damage) (3195 views)
Tasted by danstrings on 5/30/2010 & rated 97 points: Sandy’s multi course with Ash and gang – WOW!! Singing masterfully tonight, an ethereal and gorgeous wine. Hugely expressive and flamboyant for sure, loaded with violet, incense, root beer and caramel--but delicately and lightly on the palate. Exotic spices as well, and fresh things like crushed mint, licorice and anise. Deep and inky dark with asphalt, roasted meats, violet and lavender. We were swooning! (4136 views)
Tasted by 3daywinereview.com on 3/14/2010 & rated 92 points: Minneapolis Does Northern Rhone (Featuring Delas) (Braemar): Medium red and some bricking. Nose is subtle with white pepper, floral, tar. On the palate it is not real concentrated but shows off some classic Syrah character. Medium finish. This did not show as well as the 2003. (4317 views)
Tasted by Mattshank on 3/13/2010 & rated 90 points: Minneapolis Wine Club 3/13/10 ~ Northern Rhone (Braemar Golf Course): Nose: An inky, funky nose with spice and herbs (sage mostly). Palate: Bright acid with red fruit and bacon fat. Rather lean but well made. Somewhat quick finish. Given the price point not all that impressive on palate given what the nose promises. The '03' showed much better. (4167 views)
Tasted by hwallace3000K on 4/15/2007 & rated 93 points: This is drinking well now. This wine is a mid-deep, crimson colored wine. The nose is full of smoked pheasant, game, crispy bird skin, and forest. It has rich mouth with medium tannins, a little acid, and a long balanced finish. I'm suprised that this is drinking so well now. This is elegant vs over the top. I loved it. (4178 views)
Tasted by Siggy on 2/17/2007 & rated 92 points: Dinner of homemade Daube (Provencal beef stew with mushrooms). Tasted side-by-side with the 2003 Delas Marquis de la Tourette. This was a completely different animal than the 2003, showing comparatively restrained, high-toned red fruit, forest floor, mushrooms, and game. Minerally and well balanced, with complex, Burgundian earthy flavors and aromatics. Surprisingly evolved for a 2001; tasting this wine blind, I would have guessed it was much older. Excellent stuff. (3930 views)
Tasted by Dave Dalluge on 2/8/2007 & rated 95 points: Winestreet Tasting of Mostly Rhones (Delas Freres, La Vieille Julienne, Bosquet des Papes and others): Medium ruby red color. The nose is already expressive and complex with dark fruit, earth, mint, floral, and a slight menthol. This is a medium weight wine with plenty of red fruit and earth. Gains intensity from the mid-palate through the long, lingering finish. This wine is much more my style for drinking in the near future than any of the 2003 tasted. Very impressive stuff. One note of caution -- after sitting in the glass for about 30 minutes the nose became somewhat medicinal. Not necessarily bad, but not a positive development either. Not sure what to make of this. (4997 views)
Tasted by MFong on 2/6/2007: Wines of Delas Freres (Raffles Hotel Wine, Food and Arts Experience 2007) (Raffles Hotel, Singapore): From magnum. Deep purple. Concentrated perfumed nose of fruit and flowers. Burst of flavours on the attack. Deeply complex and well balanced. Jammy sweet fruit. Best of the flight. (3907 views)

U.S. Importer (Addt'l Info)

Since 1996, the firm of Delas Frères has fully retrieved the glory and spirit that made its fame. A highly motivated team is proud to help give a new lease of life to this great Rhône Valley wine merchant firm, founded in 1835. Under the guidance of its current management, numerous investments have been made at the winery at Saint-Jean-de-Muzols, near Tournon-sur-Rhône. A specially designed fermentation hall for the making of red wines, and a thorough rebuilding of the ageing cellar are amongst the key elements of the new quality charter from Delas Frères. This can be summed up in one sentence : place man and wine at the centre of the stage, together with terroir.

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

Hermitage

Guide to Hermitage wine Guide to Cote Rotie - Read about the Northern Rhone Valley

• The appellation stretches over 3 communes in the Drôme "département" : Tain-l'Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage and Larnage.

• The soils are a combination of granite with alluvial quaternary delta deposits, and, on the eastern side, Pliocene clay. This diversity explains the numerous different names given to vineyard plots within the appellation : Bessards, Greffieux, Méal, Roucoule, Beaumes, etc.

• The meso-climate provides shelter from the north winds, where the majority of the slopes is well exposed, facing south.

•The vineyards area adds up to 134 hectares/331 acres, with an annual production of 3,635 hectoliters. Authorized maximum yield is 40 hectoliters/hectare (2.3 US tons/acres).

• Grape varieties : Syrah (an addition of up to 15% of Marsanne or Roussanne is allowed).
