Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 13 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by fredb on 10/2/2013: Medium gold color. Aromas of toasted nuts, spiced pear, and baked apple with some lemon/citrus. This has plenty of orchard fruit still on the palate and shows great apple and melon notes with a lemony finish that carries a background of toasted nuts and vanilla. This is holding well but is probably at the point where it needs to be finished up to catch it at peak enjoyment for my tastes. Drink. (1327 views)
Tasted by fredb on 12/17/2011: Medium yellow color, starting to deepen. Aromas of vanilla, pear, apple, and butterscotch. Butterscotch, apple, and poached pear on the palate carry into a medium finish. This is on the back end of its prime drinking window for my tastes. Drink. (1812 views)
Tasted by fredb on 2/24/2011: Medium gold color with some hints of amber. Sweet aroma of butterscotch candy. Palate shows rich butterscotch, applesauce, lemon curd, and a hint of quince. The finish is medium. Mature, but not showing nutty oxidation notes. Drink. (1904 views)
Tasted by fredb on 12/5/2010: Bright straw color. Aromas of sea breeze, underripe pineapple, and lemon. The palate shows some hints of almond, lemon, resin, and a long finish with a strong mineral note. On day two the mineral note amplifies and this shows like a chablis with gunflint and mineral notes. A radical change from past notes and may evolve if it can avoid oxidation, but time to drink, for me. Drink. (1934 views)
Tasted by fredb on 2/26/2010: Bright yellow-gold color. Big aromas of butterscotch, sweet pear, vanilla, and lemon. On the palate, this shows a full flavor profile that is dominated by pear and butterscotch but also has some hazelnut, lemon, flowers, stones, pineapple, and bitter melon. Long finish. Showing more than the 2005 right now. Drink over the next 2-5 years. (2203 views)
Tasted by fredb on 8/3/2009: Light, bright yellow color. Nose of pears, mango, butterscotch, and yellow flowers. On the palate, this shows green and yellow apple, a hint of roasted hazelnut, butterscotch, pineapple, and green melon. Better showing than the last bottle. Full and satisfying. (1227 views)
Tasted by fredb on 7/17/2009: Pale to medium yellow in the glass. Aromas of lemon, butterscotch, yellow flowers, and pineapple. On the palate, this shows lemon, mango, apple, a hint of butterscotch and stone, and a floral spring water essence. This is light in body and still very crisp and seems destined for longer shelf life than the 2005 EL, which is heavier and already showing more advanced flavors. (1242 views)
Tasted by Cunningham on 4/9/2009: 5/5 Stars (1106 views)
Tasted by fredb on 3/23/2009: Medium straw yellow color. Aromas of honeysuckle, peach, and yellow apple. On the palate, the apple notes are almost baked with butterscotch, a hint of lemon, and a hint of stone in the background. Acids show on finish to give me confidence this will hold for a few years in the cellar. Improvement possible, but very well integrated now with lovely primary fruit character in abundance. (1110 views)
Tasted by fredb on 1/13/2009: Straw/pale yellow color. Aromas of ripe pear, melon, and vanilla. On the palate, the melon and vanilla dominate at the front and the pear is present in the finish along with yellow delicious apple. Pineapple notes emerge with time in the glass. Fresher tasting than it's 2004 Estate counterpart (from memory of most recent tasting of the 2004). Also doesn't show as much overt alcohol as the 2004 (and 2005 and 2006) estate wines. (1079 views)
Tasted by Cunningham on 12/24/2008: 4/5 Stars; not completely clear, cork fully wet on this bottle (1138 views)
Tasted by Cunningham on 12/12/2008: 5/5 Stars (1174 views)

Domaine Drouhin Oregon

Producer website

Domaine Drouhin has been on the viticultural cutting edge in Oregon since their first vintage in 1988, and continues to set the pace.

Winemaker Véronique Drouhin-Boss' roots go deep into her family's 13th century cellars under the streets of Beaune, the heart of Burgundy. She represents the fourth generation of winemakers from this venerable wine family of France, but it is here in Oregon that her skills and passion are bringing forth some of the most sublime Pinot Noir and Chardonnay produced anywhere. With centuries of Burgundian winemaking experience flowing through her blood, Véronique has lovingly crafted every drop of wine produced at Domaine Drouhin Oregon since the first vintage in 1988.

Véronique Boss-Drouhin

Our winemaker extraordinaire produces elegant Pinot Noir and Chardonnay on both sides of the Atlantic.

Véronique Drouhin-Boss, the fourth-generation winemaker of the Drouhin family, has lovingly crafted every drop of wine produced at Domaine Drouhin Oregon since our first vintage in 1988. She also now oversees the winemaking at Maison Joseph Drouhin in Burgundy, producing some of the world's finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines on both sides of the Atlantic.

Véronique's interest in wine and the family business began when she was young, and blossomed under the tutelage of father Robert Drouhin. In 1986, she graduated from the University of Dijon with an advanced degree in enology, and decided to venture to Oregon to expand her experience and learn more about the fledgling industry that was beginning to take root in the Willamette Valley. Véronique interned that year with Adelsheim Vineyards, Bethel Heights, and Eyrie. She has returned to Oregon every year since then to capture the essence of what nature provides in our unique estate vineyards.

In many ways, Véronique embodies the essence of Pinot Noir -- spirited, graceful, and feminine. Her wines at Domaine Drouhin have always been hallmarked by elegance, finesse, purity, and the capacity to improve gracefully with age.

Domaine Drouhin Oregon Chardonnay Édition Limitée

Produced from some of the oldest Dijon clones on our Estate, the Chardonnay is hand-picked, hand-sorted and then pressed whole cluster. The juice is fermented in 100% French Oak barrels to create a round, rich texture. After 11 months in barrel, Véronique selects her favorite barrels, those that are distinct and delicious. The Edition Limitée Chardonnay has a rich texture and great length on the palate. Beautiful and compelling, this cuvée possesses all of the Drouhin hallmarks - elegant and balanced, all with great finesse.

The Chardonnay Grape

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

Dundee Hills Winegrowers Association website

Located just 28 miles southwest of Portland, and 40 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean, the Dundee Hills appellation is situated within an irregular circle of about 6,490 acres in total, of which more than 1,264 acres of vineyards are planted. This region is unique for its higher elevation, warmer nighttime temperatures, less low-elevation fog and frost, and lava-based Jory soil series of reddish silt, clay and loam soils.
