| Community Tasting Notes (average 90.3 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 11 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by bon vivant on 9/19/2022 & rated 93 points: A real nice showing, hard to believe it's 22 years old. Color still shimmering bright and the aromatics are generous with exotic yellow tropical fruit and just a hint of petrol. Nice mouth feel with a dry yet rich texture and balanced medium finish with good acidity to keep it all together. This has the stuffing to keep going further although i don't see much more upside in terms of flavor development. Consider me a fan. (385 views) | | Tasted by MJHDC on 2/6/2021: Tight seal on the cork, this bottle was less advanced than I expected. Some classic petrol, but interspersed nicely with white florals and lemon. Rich and fuller bodied but, given the vintage, not at all tropical or heavy. Ripe peach. Lovely bottle. (1168 views) | | Tasted by acyso on 9/14/2017 flawed bottle: Prager Dinner with Robert Bodenstein (Chicago, IL): To my palate, this was stewy and heat-damaged; interestingly, the 2000 Klaus also suffered the same fate. (2004 views) | | Tasted by Burgundy Al on 8/11/2014 & rated 91 points: Unmistakably Riesling with that rich, unctuous Petrol character, with lots of peach and ripe apple. Very good now, should continue to drink well for another 5+ years. (1960 views) | | Tasted by mjf@ulkner on 12/18/2012 & rated 90 points: Light petrol on nose. Very dry, bordering on austere. Lemon and citrus themed flavors. Zingy acidity. Not an opulent wine, although I suspect the past 12 years have stripped some of the fruit. I'm not sure this wine has gotten better through aging- I admit I like the baby fat present in younger examples of Austrian Riesling (1923 views) | | Tasted by MC on 6/15/2012: Wonderful. Completely mature, open - really singing right now. I drank the rest too early... A- (1934 views) | | Tasted by brooklynguy on 5/17/2012: Absolutely lovely. Some secondary aromas in the mix, hints of petrol and orange peel and wax, but the wine is still youthful. It is actually very well put together, especially in the context of the very warm vintage. Not overripe, nothing tropical about it, and not warm or too fleshy. A wine whose ample body and lush fruit reflects the vintage's character, but a balanced and elegant wine. A great advertisement for Prager. (2485 views) | | Tasted by winefool on 8/28/2006 & rated 88 points: Liex-dts-cru Casual Gevrey 1ers with Wyncroft (Burgundy Al's): Bright yellow with a green tinge. Nice round aroma of mineral, fruit and acidity. Odd dusty fruit and tight acidity on the plate. (2832 views) | | Tasted by Burgundy Al on 8/28/2006 & rated 90 points: Mostly Gevrey Dinner with Wyncroft (My home - Chicago IL): Aromas and flavors of apple, slightly lean with lots of minerality, a bit bone-shakingly dry and acidic. Give this a few more years. (2053 views) | | Tasted by Burgundy Al on 10/30/2002 & rated 91 points: Great spice on nose with peach and apricot. Great mineral-driven, bone-dry, textured palate with wonderful acidity. Moderate stone fruit re-emerges on the palate. Quite good now, probably even better in another year or two. (1090 views) |

From what I understand, these wines (very ripe, dry, late-harvest, etc.) were going to be designated Honivogl (after a kind of bird found in or near the vineyards, meaning 'honey bird'. However, the Honivogl family was involved in the wine trade in Austria and objected that this would cause confusion and weakening of their trademark. Another creature was therefore selected (the green lizard called Smaragd) to be the mascot (sort of ) for this kind of wine in the Wachau. Lower Austria isn't "southern" Austria, but rather northeastern. It derives its name from its downriver location on the Danube River, which flows from west to east.Wachau Official tourism website on weinlagen-info |
