Tasted by frasoo on 4/9/2023 & rated 88 points: Tasted against the 2000 Tablas Creek Espirit de Beaucastle on Easter at a our family’s Easter barbecue. Mont Redon was a a bit tired as others noted and the Tablas, as expected, while faded had more intensity and bolder fruit. Still Mont Redon had more underlying complexity and greater refinement. I like older wines even when faded over fermented grape juice. (530 views)
Tasted by beatles on 10/8/2022 & rated 87 points: Initially quite off putting on the nose, alcohol showing heavily. "Is this correct?" I asked, but yes - and better with air, certainly, Grenache whowing with it's deep sweetness. Over the hill, drink up.
Guessed as much as Southern Rhône and Grenache - alas also guesed 2004.

Tasted by OzTrip17 on 7/23/2022 & rated 88 points: Drank with Mum & Dad - lovely! Very smooth (1018 views)
Tasted by CPSchoeff on 5/23/2019 & rated 85 points: Unsure whether to call it flawed, as my friend loved it!

Brownish deep red, somewhat opaque. A: all brett for me, couldn't get past it, along with a bit of heat. F: better than the nose, but these characteristics still coming through. Fruit is there, but fading, leather and pepper and olive. Seems like a drink now, but could be an off bottle. (3020 views)
Tasted by hrazdiiv on 2/9/2019 & rated 88 points: A nice experience, even if this bottle is a little tired. Color is a medium garnet with bricking very visible. On the nose you get elements of stewed fruit, dark cherry with some hint of smoke. The "wobbly" nature of the nose is a telltale sign that the wine is already out of balance somewhat - the fruit elements are pushing everything else away. Nonetheless, a pleasant bottle, though I went a bit back and forth on the finish - it varied over the two hours or so that we drank, but ultimately finishing strong. Good producer, nice value, just a touch over the hill I think. (3102 views)
Tasted by DCMcShane on 12/26/2017 & rated 89 points: Smooth. Capital S. No alcohol taste. Berries still good after 14 years. (3475 views)
Tasted by markydecker on 2/2/2014 & rated 90 points: Nice bottle, good balance, slightly gritty tannins, well made. Ready to enjoy now! (8558 views)
Tasted by chbeaumont on 9/8/2013 & rated 87 points: A much more enjoyable bottle. Remains chunky & hefty, but could yet knit together & turn out to be a pleasure to drink. (8736 views)
Tasted by Vintomas on 8/26/2013 flawed bottle: Clear, medium red. Unfortunately shows a mild cork taint, although it is still drinkable. Otherwise ripe red berries and some liqueur in the nose, palate with sweet and ripe red berries, some alcohol feeling, rather mild tannins, a bit agressive aftertaste due to the cork taint. From half bottle. (Perhaps 81-82 p in this state). (7486 views)
Tasted by mxpbuy on 4/18/2013 & rated 88 points: Showing bricking and color separation. Despite being intially smooth, the tannins are still a bit gritty - like fine grains of sugar. Light Ruby color, almost Burg like in a wet year, which was surprising given how hot 2003 was. The wine is clearly at the end of its life with red fruits dominating but a chalky and mineral element post mid palate that cuts off the finish a bit. Drink up because its peak is past. (7932 views)
Tasted by cltean on 3/22/2013 & rated 89 points: Very solid wine typical of the Rhône region. (6475 views)
Tasted by tenuredpro on 6/2/2012 & rated 88 points: No formal notes. Brick red color, Very nice bouquet; very fine tannins, and most of the fruit is dull compared to my memory of this wine in 2007 and 2008. Very nice balance, and you don't even notice the 14.5% alcohol very enjoyable, even though it is likely past its peak. Had with lobster thermidor, filet mignon, and risotto. (5000 views)
Tasted by chbeaumont on 6/7/2011 & rated 83 points: Rather weak & ordinary; bulky, diffuse. (5885 views)
Tasted by Sundbyberg on 2/25/2011 & rated 92 points: Really good. Had a very special fruit tucked away in the middle. Coubld probably wait 2-3 years. No need to buy more fancy Châteauneuf-du-Pape than this. Bought another 7 bottles of the 2007 vintage. (4856 views)
Tasted by tsprinkle on 1/16/2011 & rated 85 points: Stewed dark fruit, almost sweet. No real tannins to balance it. Would have been better with something highly spiced as opposed to the lamb cassoulet I paired. (6292 views)
Tasted by Benedikt on 11/17/2010 & rated 91 points: Well balanced, perfect at 7 years. Smooth, velvety and round, long finish. (6319 views)
Tasted by Nutty08 on 10/31/2010 & rated 88 points: Fresh red fruits with fine drying tannins and just a hint of spice. Wasn't showing any of the roasted character of the '03 vintage. Overall, rather simple but pleasing. (5488 views)
Tasted by goobz on 7/26/2010 & rated 89 points: Solid CDP. Truffles, Rust, Plum, Smoke. Nice fruit / acid balance. Best with food, which is probably true of all S. Rhone reds. (6070 views)
Tasted by DrFeelgood on 5/16/2010 & rated 88 points: Not unforgettable (6188 views)
Tasted by honest bob on 5/16/2010 & rated 86 points: Boring, sugary Cotes du Rhone style. Little aroma, guts or grip, a general impression of boiled sweets. BUT: accompanying a highly spiced beef daube, it attained a couple of minutes of glory, fighting back against the peppercorns with a deep juniper-berry spice of its own. Alas, as soon as the daube was eaten, the wine returned to its sickly-sweet nature. 86P (6072 views)
Tasted by ikkaariainen on 7/16/2009 & rated 88 points: The last bottle of this very good mature cdp was enjoyed with Kim over the last few evenings. This remains an excellent QPR and highly recommend it. In prime drinking window, well balanced, good structure, medium bodied with pleasant lingering aftertaste. Almost inky black. Nose nice and spicy with dark fruit, red cherry, white pepper and allspice. Primary flavors included dark cherry, terroir, allspice and development of black pepper and tobacco. (6396 views)
Tasted by ikkaariainen on 5/24/2009 & rated 88 points: Very good mature cdp enjoyed earlier tonight with good friends, slightly flatter then previous bottles remembered to be thus the slightly lower score. This wine remains an excellent QPR and highly recommend it. Very mature, drinking prime, well balanced with great structure, medium bodied with pleasant lingering aftertaste. Almost inky black. Nose nice and spicywith fdark ruit, cinnamon and allspice. Primary flavors included dark cherry, plum, underlying terroir, allspice and development of black pepper and tobacco. (6433 views)
Tasted by ikkaariainen on 5/18/2009 & rated 89 points: Two bottles enjoyed this weekend. Generally agree with previous impressions - remains an excellent QPR and highly recommend this wine. Very mature, drinking prime, well balanced with great structure, medium bodied with pleasant lingering aftertaste. Almost inky black. Nose spicier then I remembered with fruit, cinnamon and allspice. Primary flavors included dark cherry, plum, underlying terroir, allspice and development of black pepper and tobacco. (6438 views)
Tasted by plasiter67 on 5/6/2009 & rated 90 points: Color: Deep, dark almost black purple. Nose: Gobs of red fruit, raspberries, dark charries, licorice and cinnamon. Taste: Profile included plum, dark cherry, dirt, pepper and cedar. Very complex and satisfying. Mouthfeel: Good balance and structure soft velvetly mid-palate and long 30+ second finish. Overall: A definte winner and great example of classic cdp. Really nice. (6489 views)
Tasted by Blue Shorts on 4/28/2009 & rated 89 points: Received this as a gift from a friend. The wine opened up with aromas of blackberries, tar, lead pencil and a touch of roasted meat. The taste was very similar to the nose, with smooth tannins and enough acidity to pair well with food. My wife and I really enjoyed this wine. It's a good effort and a nice QPR. (6522 views)

Technical Data Sheet

Château Mont-Redon Châteauneuf-du-Pape

The first mention of this illustrious vineyard in Châteauneuf-du-Pape dates back to 1334 under the name 'Mons Retundus', in a contract stipulating the vigneron's share of the harvest. Later it became 'Mourredon' meaning 'round hill' and finally Château Mont-Redon. Today, Mont-Redon is an estate of 330 acres, of which 200 are planted in vines. It is situated in the northwestern quadrant of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation on the high, stony plateau overlooking the Rhône River considered to be the finest microclimate of the region. Mont-Redon's extradordinary position, at an altitude of 360 feet on Châteauneuf-du-Pape's highest elevation, is one of very few to include all three soils types found in the appellation including classic alpine diluvium soils with large, round stones over a clay subsoil. Planted in Grenache and Syrah, these soils lend structure and backbone to the fruit. At the foot of the plateau, sheltered sandy soils support the Mourvèdre and Cinsault vines, which in this environment develop richness and intense aromatic qualities. The vines of the Châteauneuf estate average 45 years of age, and replanting of new vines takes place amidst the older vines in order to moderate the former's growth and productivity. All of the grapes at the estate are handpicked and then 90-95% de-stemmed before crushing, fermentation and aging. This is the first cuvee, which is typically 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre and spends 6-8 months in new oak before racking and then 6-8 more months in barrel. Look for this stylish wine to show robust flavors of dark cherry, crushed red berries and pepper with notes of chocolate and citrus peel on the nose, set in a ripe, integrated tannic structure and ending in a long, sweet finish.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
