Tasted by simkodam on 10/27/2022 & rated 95 points: This is the cat's meow, lol. Rich for a Bordeaux blend. So balanced between tannins/dryness and still present fruit. Mouth filling. I don't pick up much aroma. Finish is long lasting and a reminds how wow this wine is. Another fine example of Stags Leap District wine of which I am so fond. (731 views)
Tasted by Ranjan on 12/18/2021 & rated 95 points: Brought a methuselah (6 L) to Sea-guini with 20 people. Drinking beautifullly. 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Malbec, and 5% Merlot. Elegant aromas of red and black currants, berry and subtle smoky oak, tremendous purity, medium body. The wine’s balance is stunning for being 19 years old. Wow, everyone loved it. (1397 views)
Tasted by mouki on 10/13/2020 & rated 92 points: Still drinking well, tannins are fully integrated at this point, no need to keep any longer , not over the hill but will not improve from here. (1685 views)
Tasted by Tsliwinski on 12/18/2016 & rated 92 points: Still vibrant classic CA cab. Dark fruit up front with plenty of tannins still on finish (3777 views)
Tasted by Tsliwinski on 11/13/2016 & rated 93 points: Wonderful accompaniment to hearty meal. Subtle nose of dark fruit gave way to some graphite and still long finish (3685 views)
Tasted by sunalsorises on 5/21/2016 & rated 94 points: Great value. Shows good depth with layers of fruit and silky smooth finish. Excellent wine. (3518 views)
Tasted by Bam_Man on 3/24/2016 & rated 91 points: Brought with us to Seared 1200 Chop House in St. Pete Beach. Gave this about 45 minutes of air time while we waited for our steaks, and that seemed to be enough. Surprisingly young-looking for its age - a dark, semi-opaque maroon in color, right up to the edge - with no bricking at all. Classic Napa Cab nose of crushed dark fruits, earth, cassis and a hint of vanilla. Full-bodied, but not at all heavy or over done. This is an "old school" Napa Cabernet in style. Still showed plenty of luscious plum, black cherry and dark currant fruit, with very good depth and focus. There's a vibrant acidity to this, which gives it a lively, energetic mouth feel. Finishes long, with grippy tannins that seem fully integrated, along with pretty hints of oak, black licorice and spice. Not as rich and doesn't offer the phenomenal depth and length of the Mondavi Reserve Cabernet - but still outstanding, very delicious - and only about half the price.

Tasted by VinoServant on 10/17/2014 & rated 93 points: Decanted for 90 minutes which really allowed the wine to open up and stretch its legs. This wine has a lot left in the tank. I have one bottle left and I will probably hold on to it for another 3 to 5 years. Wonderful currants with a touch of oak and leather. I have a glass left that I will have later today. This wine is so good that I would not recommend drinking it with food. Drink it on its own with a cracker and cheese. Really wonderful. (2403 views)
Tasted by elizamomo on 6/21/2014 & rated 96 points: did not decant. drinkable right away. Beautiful smell and color. Silky texture, fruity but not over powering, nice oaky finish. So Lovely.

The wine looks violet colored. The legs are medium. (3406 views)
Tasted by mwneil on 2/1/2014 & rated 92 points: Tasted at WL tasting. Light with good subtle flavors and complexity. Nicely aged. Taste came from a magnum. (1719 views)
Tasted by jonb72 on 10/23/2012 & rated 91 points: opened and drank, nice dark fruit and smoot tanins (4323 views)
Tasted by Vinacull on 11/25/2011 & rated 91 points: {ST} Opened nearly five hours earlier, 3L bottle. Air time in decanter perhaps an hour. Beautiful bouquet of cassis, cherries, flowery notes, and mild oak that I suspect is more restrained than in earlier days according to notes by others. Excellent concentration and some layers of cherries and currants with notes of leather, earth and oak. Medium acid and moderately structured finish with smooth tannins suggests plenty of life left. Excellent balance. Very nice. (4913 views)
Tasted by krmcgrath on 11/18/2011 & rated 93 points: Beautiful dark but bright wonder. Smooth integrated cedar riding hard on the nice dark fruit. Big, but really good with food. (4639 views)
Tasted by krmcgrath on 10/9/2010 & rated 93 points: Beautiful nose of blackberry, deep dark cherry, licorice, cedar and vanilla. This does need some air still as it is a little sharp and disjointed straight out of the bottle. Some time in the decanter is good to it though and this once over oaked big wine has pulled together into something balanced, interesting and delicious. (4720 views)
Tasted by Caring_Bear on 3/10/2010 & rated 90 points: Best consumed within the first 90 minutes, or after 1 day open in the cellar. Did not hold up for me after that.
Locks of dark cherry, a some plum and oak. Still quite nice. (4397 views)
Tasted by bcoburn23 on 9/19/2009 & rated 93 points: This was the last of 6 bottles I purchased and what fun it's been participating in this wine's life as my ratings ranged between 88 and 93. The first was consumed about three days after arrival (I wanted to make sure there was no bottle sickness). Although good as a baby, it whispered potential...and screamed oak. The bouquet has always presented black cherry and ripe, dark plum; but forest floor, chocolate and a fleeting note of strawberry on the back end came as the wine continued to grow while I inexorably reduced my inventory. It closed down for a portion of '06-'07, but returned far better for it. This wine is as balanced as an Olympic gymnast executing on a beam and time has rewarded those who let it grow. You'll find gobs of delicious fruit with well orchestrated, supple, soft, layered tannins augmented by flavors of blackberry, cocoa, cassis and currant. No heat either...zero. This could lay down another year or two and possibly reveal further secrets, but why wait when it very well may be at peak right now? Plus, good luck finding any. A terrific wine which brought much enjoyment for several years. Masterful. (3618 views)
Tasted by MatthewF on 8/22/2009: Another weekend of Excess; 8/21/2009-8/24/2009 (Chicagoland): Decanted 2 hours. Intoxicating aromatics; red currant and plum, wet tobacco, leather, forest floor, and cedar. Lush red fruit on the palate with a nice mineral core. Lengthy finish. Always one of my favorite bottlings from Mondavi. (4684 views)
Tasted by krmcgrath on 4/11/2009 & rated 90 points: Currents, blackberries, spice and a hint of mint all struggle a little under the oak influence. Plenty of tannins and nice acidity on the back end. (3624 views)
Tasted by hifiwine on 10/23/2008 & rated 92 points: lovely, ready to drink (3693 views)
Tasted by LACERS on 7/28/2007 & rated 91 points: Tried this a couple times a year ago and it was pretty tight and not much length to it. Opened this bottle figuring can use part of it in a reduction sauce, but took a taste and wow, the fruit has come out! Aromas of smoke, currant, blackberry, anise, and vanilla oak. Medium bodied, fruit forward, good length. No decanting needed, it was ready to drink after opening. Smoke, cassis, blackberry, vanilla, toast, tobacco on the palate. Wished I would of saved all mine till now as this was far better than a year ago, thought it was shutting down a year ago. (5366 views)
Tasted by King Cab on 6/5/2007 & rated 92 points: Pure Stags Leap. The color shows dark rich velvety crimson. The nose shows smokey cassis and dark fruits. The palate blossoms with bramble, extra dark blackberry, an aristocratic cassis, currant, French vanilla, tar and cocoa. The acid level is pure Mondavi, and the tannins are ironed out and all in a row....smooth. Fantastic mouthfeel....This is one cool customer. Some sweetness is present but not in a negative way. A smokiness that adds interest and a purity make this wine sing. The finish is long and precise. No green as mentioned elsewhere. A great effort indeed. (4671 views)
Tasted by hifiwine on 6/2/2007 & rated 91 points: emgagement party (4482 views)
Tasted by cookie7 on 4/17/2007 & rated 89 points: Note after 24 hours in a decanter. This did not show particularly well the first night, having a strong green streak to it, albeit it lessened over time. Now showing a nose of cassis and licorice. Black fruits on the initial palate followed up by a some heavy oak. I didn't get the eucalyptus, I often get from SLD wines. (4556 views)
Tasted by jvalanti on 4/15/2007 & rated 91 points: Very nice wine. Closed for about a hour, then intoxicating nose. Yes, there is oak here, but I found it well in balance. For me, this is a great wine that I would drink any time. (4543 views)
Tasted by tstan on 4/8/2007 & rated 84 points: Oak, oak, oak. Like licking a stick (toasted). (4727 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
