Tasted by henryd1 on 4/21/2014 & rated 85 points: Not a huge fan of this. It comes in at 15% and in my view the tanins and acidity don't quite stand up to the alcohol. If you like wines that are powerful and heady you might like this, but it's a bit too much for me. I had a similar problem with a Usseglio Lirac recently. (2063 views)

Roger Sabon

Producer website - Read more about Roger Sabon

The Sabon family has a long history in Chateauneuf du Pape. Quote from the homepage of the domain: "One of the oldest documented landholders in Chateauneuf du Pape, the Sabon family has controlled vineyards in the zone since 1540".
Roger Sabon is the father of the three brothers who run the domain today Jean-Jacques, Denis and Gilbert Sabon.
The vinification is since 2001 in the care of Didier Négron, son-in-law of Jean- Jacques Sabon.
Denis and his son Julien take care of the fields. Delphine, daughter of Denis is often in the reception.

Today the property has 15 ha. in AOC Chateauneuf du Pape and owns 17 ha. of vineyards in Roquemaure from where Lirac and Cotes du Rhone are made.

Roger Sabon Lirac Chapelle de Maillac

The village and commune of Roquemaure where the wine is produced enjoy Saint Valentin’s patronage. Does this mean that our Lirac is favoured by lovers? We will leave that to you to find out. In any event, Roquemaure has a long and interesting history. It was at Roquemaure that Clement V, the first Avignon pope, died. During the Middle Ages the village was also an important river port from which barges laden with “Coste du Rhone” wines, produced in our appellations, moved up the river Rhone to the north.

Appellation: Lirac

Varieties: 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 5% Mourvedre, 5% Cinsault

Vineyards: Vineyard in the village of Roquemaure characterized by hillsides, with soil composed of small round stones (galets) and chalk

Farming Practice: Sustainable

Age of Vines: 40-50 year old vines

Aging: 6 months in tank

##A top-end Lirac - the nose delivers a lovely perfumed scent, with notes of sweet spice and ripe black fruits. Lithe and silky smooth, the palate is broad and rich with spicy black fruit flavours, yet refined and elegant. The perfect partner to red meats and cheeses

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.
