Community Tasting Notes (average 94 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 32 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Puteljen! on 2/10/2024 & rated 95 points: This is just as marvelous as it was back at release. Still no discernable development. (527 views)
Tasted by Peter Spijker on 2/4/2024 & rated 93 points: Magical wine. Great balance between sugar and acidity, no overripe stone fruit but pure clean Riesling power. (574 views)
Tasted by ThijsV on 2/2/2024 & rated 95 points: BYOB dinner and then some; 2/1/2024-2/2/2024 (Avalon, Amsterdam): Although this was a bonus bottle in the line up, it was the WOTN for me. The gorgeously balanced sweetness (100 g/l RS) with the bracingly high (almost H+) acidity, complemented by the great aroma’s and flavors (lime, peach, kardemom) and the never-ending finish, just made it marvelous. No real signs of development yet, this has many decades to go. Happy to have 5 more in the cellar! (558 views)
Tasted by Puteljen! on 8/19/2021 & rated 95 points: Incredible energy! Just lacking time in the cellar for mor complexity. (2565 views)
Tasted by viniferatu on 5/16/2021: Yikes! Wild, fecund, flamboyant. Floral, fungal, diverse citrus and stone fruits, pineapple.... Thick, sweet, buoyant, pillowy, then firm and mineral and deeply cutting. Honeyed and sweet finish, with loads of citrus, spice, earth and herbs. Extremely long finish. Crazy Auslese. This will last forever. (2652 views)
Tasted by prof b on 3/14/2021: Eminently drinkable right upon opening. Great balance of acid and sweetness with a range of tropical fruits. Great now, even better with time. (2651 views)
Tasted by olalar on 10/26/2020 & rated 93 points: Tried with fruit cake and 6 days later by itself. Outstanding on both occasions. Harmony and layers of flavours with a full midpalate. (2795 views)
Tasted by kanab ram on 10/13/2020: I pulled this from the cellar thinking it was a dry Riesling for a recent dinner pairing. Although this was very sweet, it was delicious and still paired well with the dish. (2653 views)
Tasted by AudunG on 6/5/2020 & rated 94 points: Super elegant auslese in the direction of Mosel in style. Weightless in the mouth, despite loads of sugar. Lovely balancing acidity. Great auslese. (1788 views)
Tasted by Neras on 6/22/2019 & rated 93 points: Sweetnes and acidity in great balance. Would have like a little more back-bone. (2353 views)
Tasted by PT insurgent on 5/10/2019: Amazing bottle. World class auslese at pedestrian prices. ~$35 for a half bottle of this mind blowing juice.
Nose, wet rock, peach, apricot, pineapple, melon.
Palate, weighty and rich but so fresh and fine. Great acid, peach, apricot, honey, ripe citrus oils. (1983 views)
Tasted by Barry Rothof on 5/10/2019 & rated 92 points: Restaurant Fitzgerald (Rotterdam, Netherlands): Fresh and elegant with focused acid, lemon and peach, refined, weightless and very delicate. (2190 views)
Tasted by Burgaddict on 5/10/2019: Leiden again in Rotterdam at Fitzgerald: Very clean and focused, stone fruit, lemon, low alcohol. Lovely finish of an amazing evening. (2437 views)
Tasted by CADomer on 2/10/2019 & rated 97 points: Incredible intensity and energy. The wine showed explosive apples and candied citrus notes, but what really stood out was the energy of the palate. Wonderful acidity to keep everything in balance. Possibly the best young Riesling that I have ever had. (2356 views)
Tasted by mattstolz11 on 11/1/2018 & rated 94 points: From 375. Beautifully balanced wine with so much potential and a long life ahead of it. Right now its picking up a little petrol on the nose and a taut vibrating candied lemon bursting fruitiness with some honey on the palate. mouth-filling smooth body that lingers well after the sip is gone. Tasted over 3 nights and it was rock steady. glad I have a couple more halves of this (2158 views)
Tasted by Normann on 6/17/2018 & rated 94 points: Til appelsinpajonssorbet (2661 views)
Tasted by Kirk Grant on 6/17/2018: Utterly brilliant...there is so much happening on the nose and palate I'm not sure words can do this wine justice. It's almost emotional as I giggle like a happy little kid. Apples and citrus with mineral notes and ocean air come to mind as I stick my nose in the glass. Open almost 24 hours now...and the palate is cascading intense fruit flavors like kiwi, passion fruit, peach, nectarine, lime, quince, and more...all with a long, long finish that keeps causing the mouth to water more. Extraordinary!!! One of the best young Auslese Rieslings I've had and on-par with the JJ Prum goldkap in quality at a fraction of the cost. Buy as much of this as you can find...I'm looking for more. (2660 views)
Tasted by PC73 on 12/8/2017 & rated 94 points: lots of grapefuit flavour profile
great minerality and sweetness.
another impressive wine (2766 views)
Tasted by soyhead on 11/18/2017: From split
Nose - perfume, pollen, honeysuckle
Mouth - sappy, sweet, and oh so long. Powerfruit rounded pitfruit with a solid acidic kick. (2531 views)
Tasted by vinkeger on 10/14/2017: Klokkeklar frukt på nese. Hvit fersken, moden sitron, klementiner, grønne epler. Utrolig ren og presis vin. Leskende i munn; vibrerende syre og delikat sødme. Stor konsentrasjon. Lang utgang. Dette er en fryd å drikke allerede, men kommer vel til å bli bedre år for år i flere tiår fremover. Bare å glede seg! (2712 views)
Tasted by Seth Rosenberg on 5/25/2017 & rated 96 points: Yeah ... this is awesome. The nose started off with some sort of creamy nut oil, kind of like Marzipan but more like a cloud. Now it's more classic with cumin, spice, lime, minerals and some crunchy green. The palate is quite sweet but really light on its feet: with lots of lime, tangerine, mandarin. But it's the finish that's just explosive - while still being light: the brilliant spread of flavors in the mouth - with the citrus but adding some creamy tropical notes, all while being laser focused and so delicate. Nose - 5/6. Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 6/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 18/20. (3378 views)
Tasted by Puteljen! on 3/28/2017 & rated 96 points: I last had this wine this past september and this second bottle is already on the next level, showing, not maturity, but a zen-like harmony - acid, fruit, energy and sweetness all in perfect balance - to be left in the cellar for as long as you like, but already a truly great wine. (3129 views)
Tasted by olalar on 3/26/2017 & rated 94 points: With time likely 94+ (2509 views)
Tasted by denb on 1/31/2017: Nice aromas of tropical fruit. Especially citrus. Not my usual field of fluids, but definitely intrigued by this low alcohol, high flavour segment. Saving remaining bottles for some years to see how they develop. (2730 views)
Tasted by daghaug on 1/21/2017: Litt lukka på duft, men gir noe pasjonsfrukt, nektarin og appelsin. (2388 views)

Westhofener Morstein

From the winery:
The Westhofener Morstein is a sloped vineyard, facing south. Its soil consists of sandy loam over a limestone base. Its subsoil is strongly influenced by chalky acquiferous layers which act as water veins and turn into wells in very rainy periods. The consequence is a strong humidity in the subsoil, which offers ideal conditions for the rootstock by constantly supplying it with minerals and nutrients. It is this factor which defines the mineral character of the wines from this vineyard. The 2009 Morstein Spätburgunder GG is a wonderful example of this. Dark coloured with brick-red reflexes it portraits vanilla and cherry scents aligned with light notes of spices and roasted bread. On the palate it displays a young, elegant character with hints of peanuts, which bear witness to its 18 month maturation in barriques. This wine has a wonderful creamy textured finish and can be enjoyed on its own with as much pleasure as in combination with meat dishes or strong vegetarian meals.

#2014 Vintage Notes:
2014 Vintage Report by Terry Theise
2014 Vintage Report by Wine Spectator
"My gut still tells me the Saar (and to some extent) the Ruwer are better overall in 2014 than the more storied areas of the Mosel proper, but those that spent the requisite time living in their middle-Mosel vineyards made some of the most electric and "feathery" Riesling in a long time (maybe the finest in 20 years - yes, it's true!)" - Jon Rimmerman (Of course only a very short historical memory would call the Saar and Ruwer less 'storied' than the middle Mosel - jht)
