Community Tasting Notes (average 88.8 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 13 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Nubian on 2/14/2014 & rated 90 points: This wine saves the day, timeless color, red berries on first, plums, earth, spices on 2nd day. Lingering finish and surprising persistancy. Well done! (1865 views)
Tasted by Clos & Cru on 2/25/2012 & rated 90 points: in blind tasting seemed like a super tuscan, red fruit, dark chocolate, cherry, earthy, spice. on palate intence, black cherry, earty. offered more on nose then palate (2811 views)
Tasted by cjarrigo on 5/20/2011 & rated 89 points: Dark maroon with a pronounced watery lip. Tasted from bottle then decanted. Nose out of bottle was big leathery and dark fruit, now after about 1.5 hours it's raspberries and strawberries with a strong hot alcohol component to finish. Out of bottle and initially wine was very bog and full bodied yet tight. Wine mellowed quickly and after a short tannic phase has become softer on the palate. As with nose dark fruit flavor has softened to lighter fruit with hints of chocolate and coffee. Appreciable acids followed by lingering tannins. In retrospect may have been better to keep in bottle and let it open more slowly. Very nice wine, would drink now. (3049 views)
Tasted by markellen.foodies@gmail.com on 9/21/2010 & rated 89 points: OK, but seems past its prime. A little light for syrah. (3349 views)
Tasted by mzf on 9/20/2010 & rated 90 points: Very nice. Nose of tobacco, red fruits and a touch of spice. Ripe raspberry and chocolate were the predominate flavors. It was even better the second night. (3731 views)
Tasted by markellen.foodies@gmail.com on 3/10/2009 & rated 91 points: Decanted just before dinner(no sediment), and it opened up nicely over 1/2 hour. Black fruits, suave texture, and no black pepper, which Ellen says is characteristic of Aussie Shiraz. A good balanced Syrah, more Washington like, than elsewhere. (2263 views)
Tasted by Mrbuzz on 2/28/2008 & rated 93 points: My favorite Sicilian! Sadly, my last bottle of Planeta Syrah. I was a little worried when I saw a CT note on this recently...so with a little spaghetti tonight, I cracked it! Dark cloudy plum red color. Dusty cocoa powder, wild berry puree, brown sugar encrusted beef, white pepper, wet tobacco leave nose. As soon as I smelled it, I knew it was going to be good! In the mouth, full bodied, yet with Italian precision. Dark wild berry fruit, some ripe plumness with age, wonderful dark spices, exotic wood, coffee, dark chocolate. Still quite tannic, but the fruit holds its own...and throw in some nice Italian citrus acidity....this wine is drinking well! Not as powerful as I remember....but I like the melding of the aged Syrah flavors. Nice alternative to the "other" Syrahs. (1877 views)
Tasted by Heather Smith on 2/24/2008 & rated 74 points: Oh dear! A once great wine that has fallen apart. Bramble jam with not much else. Extremely disappointing wine. (1753 views)
Tasted by Vinho on 11/9/2007: G8 - Rhône (Piselli): PI. (3588 views)
Tasted by Filippo on 6/11/2007 & rated 88 points: I was actually expecting more form this fairly acclaimed wine: I found it nice but nothing remarkable. Tasted twice. (2030 views)
Tasted by Pool Boy on 5/8/2005 & rated 92 points: Ripe but not gushing. Loaded with flavors, but not bursting at the seams (or slapping you in the face) this is one terrific bottle of wine. Spice, pepper and plenty of dark red fruits and maybe some eucalyptus (mint? catmint?) was going along with other undefinable elements (on the nose). Excellent mouthfeel and wonderful finish this wine delivers. I loved it. 92 pts. (thanks Jones!!) (2889 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.
