Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.8 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 45 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Bonesetter on 5/15/2024 & rated 86 points: A bit past its best, I suspect, but still okay. Medium bodied, full flavoured. Not much on the nose, but cherries, prunes and kirsch on the palate. (57 views)
Tasted by chrispaw on 3/1/2024 & rated 92 points: Nase kirschig, Mund fruchtige Säure, intensive Textur, frische Säure (165 views)
Tasted by dutchmark on 12/13/2023 & rated 92 points: Decanted 2 hours. Leather, tobacco, white pepper, gunpowder on the nose. Tannins have completely softenened. Plum on the finish. Needed this bottle to make it 18 years and it did with style, not sure if it would have made 21 years though. (308 views)
Tasted by hargy on 6/11/2023 flawed bottle: gone, and with a strange and overwhelming sweetness - the last of my bottles (439 views)
Tasted by nkirsch on 10/7/2022 & rated 92 points: smooth, nice balance between fruit and dry, nice aroma. (784 views)
Tasted by nkirsch on 8/2/2022 & rated 90 points: Opened an hour before drinking. more of an earthy, drier flavor and style than I prefer. Not bad, just not great. More cellaring won't help, should drink now. (808 views)
 Tasted by europat55 on 10/14/2021 & rated 91 points: 2005 Chateauneuf-du-Pape (Tasted blind): Nose: 92; Palate: 90; (Tasted blind) (1283 views)
 Tasted by levicn on 10/13/2021 & rated 91 points: (1065 views)
Tasted by fadincvaros on 10/12/2021 & rated 93 points: Meraviglia di concentrazione, eppure elegante e fine. Le grandi caratteristiche dello CdP ma dal colore limpido e brillante non lo diresti. Al naso frutta, spezie, erbe, sassi e tanto altro. Bocca sontuosa, elegante e potente. Ottimo adesso, ancora meglio fra 5 anni (895 views)
Tasted by #1 or #2? on 4/20/2021 & rated 92 points: the herbal qualities in this wine stand out, both on the nose and palate. ...savoury and fragrant, you'll also find pepper, damp earth, mint. some plum makes a appearance. there is a very nicely integrated sweetness that swirls on the tongue as well. well on in its evolution, i would not wait any longer on these. (900 views)
Tasted by ljl203 on 2/13/2021 & rated 92 points: Crunchy red fruit, twigs, bark, thyme and oregano, and butter. Some oak, and spiced bitters. Well integrated, long finish. (914 views)
Tasted by ljl203 on 1/12/2020 & rated 92 points: What a difference from my last bottle (nine years ago). Rose, dried cherries, thyme, mushroom. Some oak but no hard edges with a long finish. (1123 views)
Tasted by Weinberg Falls on 8/2/2019 & rated 92 points: Like the 01 and 03 vintages before it, this came straight out the bottle firing on all cylinders. It also shared the same light colouring and summer fruit, vanilla and cigar box nose. 05 seems to be a little hotter than the other TL CdPs I've had, but the palette is still wonderfully balanced in its red fruit, richly spiced and delicately floral flavours. It's only in the finish that the smack of drying alcohol that you get the feel of the power of the vintage. Bottle disappeared very quickly. (1242 views)
Tasted by Cipivts on 5/29/2019 & rated 92 points: Medium ruby garnet, orange rim, black fruit, herbs, rubber and spices aromas, the alcohol is present but nicely balanced by good acidity and tannins. Great start, power, elegance, love the sweet spices and black fruit on the palate, long finish. Great (1326 views)
Tasted by ctjared on 4/26/2019: drinking very well. more of what I still like in CDP (1205 views)
Tasted by Tartiflette on 11/30/2018 & rated 92 points: No decant. This wine is ready to drink right away. And what a positive surprise this was. Very Burgundian in its expression. Smooth and mature fruit and no hard tannins left. And just enough acidity to make this wine a real pleasure. Beautiful nose and balanced in the mouth as well. Medium aftertaste. (1440 views)
Tasted by nkirsch on 8/11/2018 & rated 92 points: Nice fruit right from the get go. Smooth tannins. Easy drinking (1318 views)
Tasted by Bradetti on 9/5/2016 & rated 90 points: Decanted for 8hrs.
Nose: very fruity (cherry, raspberry) and some kind of earthy notes. I liked very much.
On the palate it starts also with nice fruit but then the acid/tannin duo together with the high alcohol blows all other tastes away. Still too young?

Nose: 93p
Palate: 87p (2670 views)
Tasted by RhoneG on 2/28/2016 & rated 95 points: Very savory, with red fruit in the background. Raspberries and cherry pit are in the background. Lavender, brush, sage and mint own this place. Drink or hold, it feels like it has a lot of life left. (3032 views)
Tasted by Modern Tage on 7/30/2015 & rated 93 points: Really impress by the mineral, earthy(palate),fall season rainy day(nose).ready to drink, alot of things to dig.well balance.nice one.try it if the chance come (3513 views)
Tasted by Tartiflette on 7/14/2014 & rated 92 points: What a strange love/hate experience I had with this bottle! Definitely a well made wine. Decanted 3 hours. Lots of red fruit and Rhone spices. Fat texture and long aftertaste, and a bit brown around the rim. A times I thought this was just a bit too "warm" for me. Not your classic CdP. (4048 views)
Tasted by StefanAkiko on 6/20/2014 & rated 93 points: Midsummer Night's Celebration (Pagan Way) (1 star L'Effervescence (Tokyo)): In tonight's company, its Olde Worlde pedigree is quite apparent on the nose, with its earthy, restrained dry forrest floor.
Displayed all the richness of a great non-sweet CdP. Quite balanced and a little "muffled" compared to last month's btl. La Garrigue can be found on the palate; that is rich, intense and long. This has subtle herbal qualities that are just amazing!
Early drinking window. (4672 views)
Tasted by StefanAkiko on 6/5/2014 & rated 95 points: A fantastic, rich, non-jammy, rustic and elegant CdP with a good dollop of EtOH. Not for emos, the faint of heart nor sensitive palates.

This is awesome! A fantastic CdP just entering early maturity with tremendous upside for keepers.

Colour is deep red with a beautifully bricking tinge.
Nose is rich, grande and huggingly inviting. Not unlike a Napa cab. Non-blind impression is also of a whiff of La Garrigue.
On the palate, it is rich with mature fruit, yet restrained and with a great acid/tannin set for vertebrae. Standing straight with a stern face, it still has a warm personality of mature fruit, dark expressions, seasoning herbs and an excruciating concentration with spring-sun-like intensity... (Very little sediment...)
This will grow and evolve over many years to come and we really look forward to the ride.
Two btls to go, next one some time after 2020.

Tasted by jpizquierdo on 4/8/2013 & rated 90 points: was a good wine, but nothing spectacular, i would not buy another bottle. flavor was fruity, figs and liquorice . medium finish (3145 views)
Tasted by zscheiner on 4/1/2013 & rated 91 points: 2005 Chateauneuf du Papes (Rich & Peggy's House, Los Altos, CA): Pretty nose, mix of red and black berries. Juicy berry fruit, with some savory, meaty notes. Moderate tannins. Others found this oaky, I didn't notice any at all. (my 1st, group's 6th) (2489 views)

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
