Community Tasting Notes (average 90.8 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 16 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by pinoteer on 5/24/2023 & rated 90 points: Probably one of the unofficial 1er Cru vineyards in Marsannay, and a Vieilles Vignes to boot. Drinkable from the PnP, but it really smooths out with some decanter time. Beautiful burgundy color. Lots of crisp red fruits, vanilla, brambles, medium+ acidity, and medium+ tannins, giving this a velvety mouthfeel. No hurry to drink these, as they should hold together for another decade or more. Honestly, probably 90 right now, but a pleasure score of 92. (300 views)
Tasted by jlhkiss on 4/5/2022 & rated 93 points: Consistent with notes from Oct'20, only more accessible and enjoyable. More fruit delineation on the palate and a more refined, smooth finish. Medium complexity but very well executed with good balance, depth, and feel. Outstanding QPR. Drink 2022-2026. Technical score: 92.Enjoyment score: 94. (529 views)
Tasted by chablis28 on 9/3/2021 & rated 91 points: Slox-oxed for 2hrs prior to dinner in Riedel Vinum Burgs & btl. Almost 3yrs since my first btl. Semi translucent ruby red. Spicy, wild berry & underbrush aromas. Red fruit w/ mineral, spice, hint of iron & emerging forest floor notes. Tannins largely resolved thanks to the '15 vintage. Especially placid 3-1/2hrs after opening near the end of dinner. Not as ripe as some '15s but honest, terroir driven red Burgundy punching above its humble appellation in '15. From 50yr old vines. 13% Alc Bravo Kermit Lynch! Some room for further improvement w/ 3-5 more yrs assuming, the fruit hangs in there. 91+ Paid $30 on release. (1019 views)
Tasted by jlhkiss on 10/26/2020 & rated 93 points: Decanted with mixed pork leftovers. Took about 30-min to open up. Dark crimson color with a purple hue. Nose brings wildflowers, potpourri, lavender, cherry blossoms, blackberries, and whiffs of cloves and bitters. The palate is medium, round, tangy, and textured, bringing bright red cherries and pomegranate mixed with blueberries, plums, rhubarb, black tea, and orange peel. The finish is supple and smooth, with noticeable but refined tannins. Was a pleasure. Drink 2020-2026. Technical score: 92. Enjoyment score: 94. (1026 views)
Tasted by melzar on 12/18/2019 & rated 92 points: A point more! I expected this wine would shut down. Praise Kermit Lynch. Never a losing wine. Marsannay makes good red only in great vintages. 2015 is such a vintage. Beautiful Pinot nose. Impeccably well balanced palate. Long finish. Wish I had more. Will check wine-searcher. (1274 views)
Tasted by Darjeeling on 11/13/2019 & rated 91 points: Would rate 90 giving 91 as benefit of the doubt. Bright cherry, plucot, plum and other sangria like fruits. Positive fruit forward wine. Lovely and QPR is there. Its going strong and is very acidic with a strong tannic finish. Considering its pinot noir roots. It is dry and seems more like a 13.7 on the alcohol scale. Dark and weighty Marsannay. Like this bottle no issues with cork.

Ends with a mouth feel of grapes juice... so its tannic and pucker acidic. Doesnt this prove that ca pinots are similar in ripe vintages. May develop for another 3 to 5 years. (991 views)
Tasted by Ibetian on 10/8/2019: Cork was a bit soft and stained halfway up, but wine was fine. A nice enough wine, and might be better in a year or two, but not motivated to buy more of this. Have another bottle, so it that makes a better impression will report back. (1056 views)
Tasted by slulkin on 3/27/2019 & rated 91 points: Cork was stained about halfway up, so I was slightly concerned when I opened the bottle. After tasting it though, those concerns were put to rest. Dark fruits and earth on the nose. Palate showed lots of dark sweet fruit, some spice, and earthiness. Finished with some chewy tannins. Very enjoyable (drank on its own). (1145 views)
Tasted by chablis28 on 10/29/2018 & rated 88 points: Ruby red color. Spicy and wild berry aromas. Dark fruited with mineral, spice and yet to completely resolve semi chewy tannins. This didn't soften up with food much either. Not as ripe, fruit driven or refined as 2015 Burgs from the best CdN sites further south but honest, characterful and tasty none the less. I have one more of these and will give it a minimum of 3 more years as I believe this needs time and has the structure to age. Not, in its prime drinking window yet. From 50 year old vines. 13% Alc. 88-89pts, right now. (1752 views)
Tasted by melzar on 9/22/2018 & rated 91 points: My fourth favorite of eight bottles tasted on Sep 17 at my club's blind tasting of 2015 Red Burgundy. Outstanding value. Drinking at peak now. a little chunky, but unmistakably Burgundian. Good balance. Tannins are there, but balanced with copious fruit. Should hold a while but not likely improve. (910 views)
Tasted by melzar on 6/25/2018 & rated 91 points: Marsannay makes good red wine only in the best vintages. 2015 is such a vintage. Kermit Lynch import- a good sign. This wine does not disappoint. Already showing a deep Pinot Noir nose, the palate is redolent with sweet fruit, and enough tannin to provide focus. decent acidity and a pleasant medium finish (slightly hot). This wine is for early drinking. Let your grand crus sleep for now. (1078 views)
Tasted by Cj802 on 4/4/2018: 4/4 bottles I've drunk of this have had very leaky corks. That said, none were oxidized.

A big, ripe Marsannay that is night and day in comparison to the same producer's 2015 Bourgogne 'En Montre Cul'. Not oaky, but quite dark, ripe and almost tannic. Notes of black tea, citrus, and dark fruits. This is quite good honestly for the price, and I enjoyed it. But, with the cork problem, I wouldn't want to wait very long to drink this one.

Still, a good Burgundy for the price. (1423 views)
Tasted by cmmatthews on 12/26/2017 & rated 89 points: Wow...big fruit and acidity on this one. If you are looking for a more earthy burgundy, it won't be for you, but if you tend towards CA Central Coast type Pinot, you'll enjoy. (811 views)
Tasted by waywardsailor on 12/26/2017 & rated 93 points: Very fruit forward, with a well balanced palate. Normally, I don't like wines with this much big, bold fruit but this one works well. Can't beat the value. (1182 views)
Tasted by srh on 10/14/2017: Taste Bordeaux & Burgundy (San Diego Wine Co.): “From 50 yr old vines grown on slopes of calcareous soils;” Typically, “Aged in barrel for 12-16 mos, 30% new oak;”

N: CLOSED; Earth atop cherries?

P: LM, poss Med, body; Almost swtish, smoky tinged frt met by an astringent pucker which morphs into a finish with a burgeoning swtness to the very fine tannins. DESERVES/needs another 12-18 mos. VERY nicely done! 13% ABV; [As of late Mar '20, wine-searcher still shows 1 source @ $40]. (807 views)

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
