Community Tasting Notes (average 90.3 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 23 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Klugi Wine on 6/27/2020 & rated 92 points: Still drinking nicely with a sweet bouquet of coconut, some cherries and some bacon/umami. The palate was still in balance but I would drink it over the next few years. (1214 views)
Tasted by grumi62 on 6/4/2018 & rated 90 points: still good, bordeaux like with mostly petit verdot and some cabernet sauvignon. 1 hour decant, very good for 2 hours, medium body, faded at the end. 90.5 rating (2023 views)
Tasted by jfurey21 on 12/7/2014 & rated 95 points: Legit. The real deal. This wine has aged fantastically. Better than the first. What a treat. Silky texture with perfumed aromatics. I really appreciate the wines of Viader. (3436 views)
Tasted by Bongzilla on 8/9/2014 & rated 94 points: Fanciest wine I've ever had. Fantastic. (3429 views)
Tasted by no leashes on 3/22/2014 & rated 90 points: Very tasty, drinking nicely. (3590 views)
Tasted by no leashes on 2/19/2013 & rated 90 points: Very enjoyable, drinking nicely. (3348 views)
Tasted by oenophilemoose on 1/18/2013 & rated 91 points: Rim is browning ever so lightly, pleasant inviting nose, and somewhat subdued dark fruit on the palate with a mid-length displaying just a touch more cedary oak than this palate fully appreciates. (3107 views)
Tasted by jfurey21 on 11/24/2012 & rated 91 points: Brought this to Finny's gig and he opened an 03 V. This is a nice wine. Tannins are integrated. It has currant notes and still quite fruity. Have one more. Maybe open in a few years. (1668 views)
Tasted by FAA on 10/3/2012 & rated 90 points: Still has life left. lots of fruit, black cherry overtones. (1972 views)
Tasted by no leashes on 3/9/2011 & rated 90 points: Similar notes to last time - dark berry, currant and spice flavors, dark color, excellent texture. Fine tannins make for very nice drinking right now. In half bottle. (1973 views)
Tasted by Julex on 3/15/2009 & rated 89 points: From magnum, drinks well popping and pouring with a bit more fruit forward than I expected. 2 hours in decanter helps unwind a little. (2199 views)
Tasted by no leashes on 11/27/2007 & rated 90 points: Nice dark berry, currant and spice flavors, dark color, excellent texture. Fine tannins make for very nice drinking right now. In half bottle. (2233 views)
Tasted by Vino Me on 3/31/2006 & rated 87 points: Powell brought a signed magnum of this wine to Anwar's house last Saturday when he was in town. We drank it side by side with the 1999 Viader. Not on par with the 1999 in my opinion. I think Winetex called this "nice but uninspiring" in her Cellartracker note and I agree. Some of the same cherry notes as in the 1999 along with raspberry. However, the fruit was a little thinner. 87 points. (2707 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 3/25/2006 & rated 90 points: Opened at Anwar's. Similar to the '99 Viader with smoky dark fruit aromas and flavors. I preferred this just slightly over the '99 as it's ready to go. (2057 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
