| Community Tasting Notes (average 84.7 pts. and median of 87 pts. in 21 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by Screwcaps on 1/9/2021 & rated 90 points: 18 MdR Rueda Tropical fruits and flowers, with a lovely savoury and chalky length of flavour. Cracking value and very pretty to smell. 90 (672 views) | | Tasted by Sir JMusic on 12/30/2020 & rated 90 points: A really fine summer wine. Buy by the case as Haskells. (524 views) | | Tasted by fredfta on 6/14/2020 & rated 89 points: Produzido pela tradicional bodega riojana Marquês de Riscal na DO Rueda, região onde a uva Verdejo encontrou o seu terroir.
Conjunto equilibrado, refrescante, frutado e gastronômico, deu boa liga com acarajé. (666 views) | | Tasted by fotomill on 5/28/2020 & rated 89 points: a bit like Marlborough SB, plus raspberry note in finish. Starts from 90/100, ending in 87/100. So drink in an hour, once opened. (414 views) | | Tasted by Conde on 5/15/2020 & rated 85 points: Jag gillar det här. Frisk och aromatisk doft av Piggelin, päron, nyslaget gräs och lite tropisk frukt. Frisk och god smak med inslag av päron, citron och örter. Lite bråkiga syror och något kort med en lätt bitter knorr. Enkelt men gott. (731 views) | | Tasted by G_Talbot on 4/27/2020 & rated 83 points: Acceptable - Good.
Pale lemon. Medium (+) intensity nose of guava, tinned mango, pineapple, with some rockmelon thrown in as well. Dry, medium acid, with an alcoholic burn at 13.5% (worrying), medium (+) bodied, medium flavour intensity, with the palate matching the nose, with pineapple and a medium (-) mango finish.
Drink now, this really is a simple wine all about tropical primary fruit.
I would note that this wine was hugely influenced by serving temperature. Straight out of the fridge it was quite refreshing, enjoyable and almost had a bitter, pithy note, but at room temperature it morphed into a cloying tropical fruit salad. (414 views) | | Tasted by RajivAyyangar on 1/27/2020 & rated 60 points: MNB: Sauv Blanc and laterals (Home (Noe st)): (blind) Pale yellow color. Reductive nose. Not in a great way. Super bitter. Dry. 13%% alcohol (actually 13.5%), medium acid, super bitter. Neutral aromas.
What could be this bitter? Low quality wine or a phenolic grape? Low-end Verdelho?
Cheap rueda? Final call: Low-end Gruner because it's bitter.
Actually: Marques de Riscal - actually Cheap Rueda. Analysis: This is a terrible wine. Super bitter.
TA: guessed 5 (actually 5.6) - feels like there's a ton of malic. Super hard acid. pH: guessed 3.3 (actually 3.1) Sugar: dry. (769 views) | | Tasted by ohne_musik on 11/22/2019 & rated 87 points: One of the best <$10 whites out there. Juicy, crisp, Lime-pear-apple, good acid, and holds up against a variety of foods. (993 views) | | Tasted by ProfByron on 11/2/2019 & rated 80 points: This is the version that doesn’t have Verdejo on front label, though back label says this is the grape variety.
Young, plain. Tinned fruit character.
{13.5%, screwcap} (432 views) | | Tasted by FransS on 10/24/2019 & rated 84 points: Nice, friendly, juicy, one-dimensional and a whiff of artificial pear. (436 views) | | Tasted by KSWinegeek on 7/7/2019 & rated 89 points: Light straw color. Fragrant pineapple, citrus and herbal nose. Nice mouthfeel with pineapple flavors. Long tart finish. Refreshing aperitif wine and tremendous value. (278 views) | | Tasted by Fwmsmeets on 5/1/2019 & rated 89 points: Bought it in a 3l box and enjoyed every sip from it. Fresh pear jumping out, nice drinkable at all temperatures, nice lenght. (546 views) | | Tasted by Ethom on 4/19/2019 & rated 89 points: This Verdejo drinks much like a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, crisp, dry, lemon, and maybe a touch of gooseberry. (523 views) | | Tasted by jwmarkvoort on 4/19/2019 & rated 89 points: A wonderful wine at the price. Went well with white fish. (437 views) |
| Marqués de Riscal Producer websiteVerdejoVerdejo thrives in Northwestern Castile continental climate and gravel soils. The grape gives aromatic wines, often soft with body. Wines take on a slightly yellowish color, with a youthful, greenish hue. A crisp and fresh white variety with grassy notes, a touch of fruit and excellent level of acidity. The extract, a key factor when assessing the personality of great white wines, is perceived through its volume and its characteristic bitter touch, which leaves a glint of originality in the mouth, accompanied by a rich fruity expression. These wines are harmonious, and their aftertaste invites to go on drinking.Spain Vinos de España - Wines of Spain (Instituto Español de Comercio Exterior) | Wikipedia Wine Map on weinlagen-info
Spain is the third largest wine producing nation in the world, occupying the majority of the Iberian Peninsula with vast diversity in climate, culture, and of course, wine. From inky, dark reds of the [Priorat] to dry, white Finos from Andalusia, Spain can easily boast of elaborating a wide variety of notable styles. Within Spain there are currently 62 demarcated wine regions, of which a handful have gained international recognition: [Rioja], Priorat and [Ribera del Duero]. Yet these regions are only a small sample of the high quality wines Spain produces. Regions such as Cava, Penedes, Somontano, Galicia, Rueda and Jerez are only a few of the numerous regions worthy of exploration throughout Spain. Spain can also lay claim to having the most land under vine in the world, growing up to, by some accounts, 600 indigenous varietals of which Tempranillo is their most well known. Other popular varietals include [Garnacha], Bobal and Monastrell for reds and for whites; the infamous [sic] Palomino Fino grape which is used in the production of sherry wine, Pedro Ximenez in Montilla Morilles, Albarino used in the creation of the bright, effervescent wines of Galicia, and Verdejo in Rueda. - Source: - Catavino.net
Spain is not in the forefront of winemaking for its dessert wines, other than for its sweet wines from Sherry country including the highly revered Olorosos (when sweetened). But apart from Sherry Spain has a range of styles of dessert wines, ranging from the those made from the Pedro Ximenez grape primarily in Jerez and Montilla-Moriles) to luscious, red dessert wines made in the Mediterranean from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape. Some good Moscatels are made in Mallorca, Alicante and Navarre. The northwest corner of Spain, Galicia, with its bitter Atlantic climate, is even making dessert wines, called “Tostadillos” in the village of Ribadivia (similar to France’s “Vin de Paille”). The Canary Islands have made interesting dessert wines for centuries (they are mentioned by Shakespeare, for example) and in recent years the quality of winemaking has been improved and the Canary Islands wines are being better marketed now. The winemaking styles for “Vinos Dulces” are also diverse, from “Late Harvest” (Vendimia Tardía) to “Fortified Wines” (Fermentación Parcial).
