Community Tasting Notes (average 90.6 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 34 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Neddy9 on 4/17/2024 & rated 92 points: Well, I obviously didn't (couldn't) wait another 5 years, as per my 2022 note, but with friends over from WA, I was keen to see if and by how much this wine had changed . . and the answer is not by much. Still very dense colour right to the rim; it's a definite black/red, much the same as previous bottle. I decanted it and there was a small amount of sediment, easily removed. What impressed me this time was the lovely aroma of Cabernet 'blackcurrant' that wafted up, more like what I'd expect from Coonawarra. Some nice French oak cedar character, light touch of chocolate, but really fine boned and velvety mid palate before firm but fine grained tannins still kick in. Oodles of rich fruit left and lovely balancing acidity for a 14.5% A/V wine, so the remaining bottles are definitely staying put now. (77 views)
Tasted by Neddy9 on 9/7/2022 & rated 92 points: Bought this several years ago and have been patiently waiting for it to open up. Incredibly dark black/red colour still, with a hint of browning at the edge, but not a worry. Very little sediment. Bouquet is redolent of dark berries with hints of cassis, chocolate and subtle oak. Beginning to enter its secondary phase - plenty of mid palate fruit richness and intensity. Tannins are well built into the wine, and while firmish still, with food (grilled eye fillet) they worked well. 3 bottles left and I'll give them another 5 years, given the power and alc level. Screw cap; 14.5% A/V (516 views)
Tasted by chirp54 on 9/21/2020 & rated 93 points: Gloriously rich and well-balanced. (879 views)
Tasted by Michael Brooks on 11/16/2019 & rated 92 points: Deep, rich flavours - cassis, prunes (614 views)
Tasted by Leto South on 10/19/2019 & rated 89 points: Blackish red, edge still young. Bq w dark chocolate, blackberries, cedar, some herbal notes (oregano, eucalypthus). Medium+ body w nice sweet fruit on attack, finegrained tannins, rather high acidity. Some drying of the fruit in the aftertaste, but still good aftertaste. The high alcohol (14,5%) barely noticeable. Has begun its descent now. (1052 views)
Tasted by Michael Brooks on 10/17/2019 & rated 93 points: Balanced red currents and spice with a nice finish (591 views)
Tasted by PeterjW on 5/4/2019 & rated 92 points: smooth rich with good tannin back bone black fruit lasting on the palate (895 views)
Tasted by Milliontown on 6/20/2016 & rated 94 points: From magnum, had on my wedding night so notes are hazy. There was a bit left in the bottle the following day for us, so it was good to have a taste once the fog had cleared. Bright cherry, menthol, camphor, eucalypt, bell pepper, strawberry and thyme aromas. Quite complex, with a deep and dense mouthfeel. Long palate with fine, fine chalky tannins. Great acidity balancing out the weight on the palate. Mature and a pleasure to drink at it's apex. (2756 views)
Tasted by hitechnomad on 8/16/2013 & rated 91 points: it's Aussie Cab so it's not Bordeaux, but I found it restrained for what it is. Very nice (4493 views)
Tasted by finewinebuff57 on 8/11/2013 & rated 88 points: Sweet Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon fruit - too 'sweet' for my taste, but time may help. Rich ripe, generous, rather one dimensional (4170 views)
Tasted by dfchivers on 12/30/2012 & rated 90 points: Great flavor - big black fruits. (4511 views)
Tasted by forecaster on 8/9/2012 & rated 89 points: RBNZ wine appreciation society - Cabernet blends (RBNZ): Heady nose, perhaps a bit overripe. A good wine, but too overripe for me. Reasonable length. (5411 views)
Tasted by Alexroy on 7/28/2012 & rated 91 points: Nice purple hue, alcohol on nose with dark fruit. Medium weight dark fruit classic cab Sauvignon. Nice tannic balance. Surprisingly mellow. Very enjoyable. (3495 views)
Tasted by Alexroy on 11/18/2011 & rated 90 points: Violets and menthol on nose, dark red colour, big, rich smooth, firm grippy tannins, muted fruits, good length. (2612 views)
Tasted by Alexroy on 6/10/2011 & rated 87 points: Dark burgundy, fresh blackcurrent nose. Blackcurrent, butch Australian flavours, medium length tannic, few years left in this. (2669 views)
Tasted by Patrick - winereviewer.com.au on 1/14/2011 & rated 95 points: Deep red in the glass, the nose has wonderful Cabernet characters of blackberry, mint, olives and cedar. The palate is just starting to shine through after a few years in the bottle with blackberry, plum , ripe stems and subtle savoury oak. The wine has an exceptional tannin structure that frames the wine, giving it cellaring potential, the tannins however are not over extracting to the extent of the wine not being enjoyable in it's youth. On the finish the length is considerable , this wine has a long and illustrious career ahead of it.

Who is Peter Lehmann?

Peter Lehmann, with 33 vintages already under his belt, started his own winery in 1979, partly as a means of helping with the glut of grapes then afflicting the Barossa. "I'll take your grapes and turn them into wine," he told the desperate growers, many of them conservative farmers of Silesian descent who regarded their old vines as part of their patrimony. "But I'll only be able to pay you when I sell the wine." They gratefully accepted. Without this deal, it is widely thought that the Barossa would have lost a huge chunk of its old vines. The 'Masters' wines are made from the parcels regarded by the winemakers as the best Semillon, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz of the vintage.

Peter Lehmann Wines
In 1979 Peter Lehmann parted ways with Saltram to start Masterson Wines, the company which has since evolved into Peter Lehmann Wines, in a move solely designed to help the growers he had built relationships with over the years. Peter took the surplus grapes and doing business on a handshake sold wine on a “pay now and we’ll deliver in two years” arrangement called ‘The Futures’. This raised enough money to buy the growers’ fruit and process it into what became the first ever vintage of Peter Lehmann wine in 1980. Today the winemaking team at Peter Lehmann have a collective winemaking mentality defined by former chief winemaker and mentor, Andrew Wigan. Over the years there has been a natural evolution within the team but the approach has remained the same; consistency and a continuous strive for perfection. "We are always looking for ways to make better wine. To never rest on our laurels. There is a strong sense of pride and tradition that surround our wines.” Tim Dolan, Senior Winemaker

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon
