Community Tasting Notes (average 91.6 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 22 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by CamWheeler on 6/21/2018 & rated 91 points: Mivvy Catchup: Orange peel, pomegranate, toast and wax. Lovely sweet profit, really composed and balanced. Maybe lacking a bit of complexity to be better but still great to drink. (1610 views)
Tasted by acyso on 12/3/2017 & rated 93 points: Vinetasters: Brown Bag (Skokie, IL): Served double blind. Clear botrytis on the nose, and that's especially true given the colour. A bit of peaches on the palate, as well as some rich spice. Touch of caramel on the nose as well. The palate doesn't seem to show too much acidity or brightness. Not much varietal character; which makes me think this is pinot gris. Clearly sweet enough to be the VT level. The other hint that this is Alsatian is that slightly lifted, almond, aldehydic, and bitter finish. I guessed Zind-Humbrecht from the late 1990s. (2523 views)
Tasted by SineQuaNon on 10/4/2015 & rated 92 points: Outstanding! Beautifully balanced wine of great richness! Golden amber colour and apricot flavour with the acidity just right. (2313 views)
Tasted by short and confused on 3/29/2013 & rated 94 points: Brought up from the cellar, popped and poured. Color: Golden brown. Nose: There was quite a bit of evolution in the nose over 3 hours. At first somewhat closed but gradually opened up. Initially dominated by rich yellow fruit but the nose then morphed into more muted yellow fruits, a few flowers with a background of burnt sugar. Palate: Almost cloying and flabby in the beginning but then settled down wonderfully. Sweet, sappy and rich. Marmalade, orange and apricots as well cream, burnt sugar and a slow burning spice. Wine you could spread it on toast. By the end of the night, I could not keep my nose out of the glass. Heavens this was lovely. (3353 views)
Tasted by Rezy13 on 2/3/2013 & rated 92 points: Super Bowl 2013 (Cumming, GA): Golden brown color; nose of creme brulee, low acid, apricot marmalade; something that reminds me of soda on the palate, and some interesting exotic fruit notes. Was told they used wild yeasts and fermentation took forever. Sweet, sappy and very rich. Thought it was '95 Pinot Gris SGN. Interesting wine. (3836 views)
Tasted by pilot360 on 12/15/2011: Great flavors and nose of apricot and tropical flavors, however the acidity was lacking, giving this a flabby, flat unexciting palate. (2802 views)
Tasted by Papies on 6/3/2010 & rated 91 points: The wines of Zind-Humbrecht 2007 -1989, with Richard Brazier (Handford Wines, London): Handford's "The wines of Zind-Humbrecht 2007 -1989" with Richard Brazier, London June 3rd 2010

Voted 2nd favourite of the tasting.
2000 was a good vintage overall. VTs are late picked with some botrytis and hence they are dense rich wines. Deep golden colour again like the Clos Jebsel. Marmalade. Again dense, rich wine with lots of sweetness. Verges on the limit of how sweet it can go. (3105 views)
Tasted by cgfrendly on 1/24/2010 & rated 90 points: gotten really dark amber by now, not what I consider an attractive color but
nose and taste are fine; tasting very good, classic nose, moderate sweetness (2383 views)
Tasted by Terkel on 12/28/2009 flawed bottle: Dinner with friends (My place): Amber golden color. Weak nose with wet cardboard box, apricots, caramel and burned sugar. On the palate the fruit also seems thinned out by cork taint. But the sweetness and acidity balance is fantastic. I’m sure this bottle was flawed, but it seems it could have been very interesting. (2175 views)
Tasted by canan on 12/28/2009: The nose has some apricot sweetness and caramel but also a little pee.
Intense sweet apricot on the palate rounded nicely with some caramel and a minor touch of vanilla. A good and fitting acidity.
The wine did however have a little hint of being corked which perhaps ruined the overall impression that was a little weak. (2184 views)
Tasted by mjmal on 2/28/2009: There is a lovely nose here of toasted orange marmalade, very ripe mango, juicy nectarine and burnished copper. It is similarly nice in the mouth, where it shows off an exotic edge to its viscous mango, marmalade, brown sugar, caramel, yellow raisin and browning spiced apple flavors. It finishes long and just a bit sugary, with the yellow raisin and marmalade notes lasting a good long while. The wine holds up amazingly well for at least a week in the refrigerator, too. (2168 views)
Tasted by acheng on 8/1/2007 & rated 90 points: Consistent note. Honey and lychee. Sweet and generous mouth feel. Good length. Outstanding. 90 points (2358 views)
Tasted by ColinR on 5/13/2007 & rated 93 points: Rich yellow, light amber; intense pears, wild honey, oranges, lychee, minerals; semi-sweet, honeyed, citrusy, minerally, oily, medium-full body, good structure, beautiful acidity, long finish.
Lots of tartrate crystals. This late harvest wine was full of flavour with an intriguing mouthfeel and excellent balancing acidity. Went well with chicken but next time I'll just savour it on its own. (2339 views)
Tasted by PatrickinKW on 3/18/2007 & rated 93 points: What can i say, this stuff is just amazing. Extremely well balanced, nice acidity, deep yellow colour, amazing nose of stonefruits and rot. Had it with some medium strength cheese after dinner. I'll be getting more! Also, great PQR. (2387 views)
Tasted by acheng on 2/18/2007 & rated 92 points: Even better than before. Fantastic length. Consistent notes. Outstanding. (2504 views)
Tasted by futronic on 12/23/2006 & rated 92 points: Pre-Christmas Duck and 2001 Barolo Dinner (basecadet's House): Medium-dark gold colour. Aromas of apples, poached pears, and apricots. A little funk initially on the nose, but that blew off with 10-15 minutes of air. Full-bodied, lush, with spice, lemon, ginger, and apricot notes. Long finish, ~40s, with dried apricots and white fruit. This wine wasn't sweet enough to go with a poached forelle pear frangipane tart (which wasn't very sweet to begin with). Best served on its own, or with a bit of cheese at the end of a meal. (3484 views)
Tasted by acheng on 12/2/2006 & rated 91 points: A sumptious nose of honey and white fruit, sweet and full body, good length. Drank it at a local alsace restaurant. Went well with most of the food. In fact almost finished the whole bottle even before the main course was served. It was that good or maybe we were just thirsty! (2557 views)
Tasted by Machiavelli on 12/1/2006: Dinner at Paese with the gang. Went very well with cheese course. Deep gold, almost amber colour. Apricot, honey, almost gingerbread, lanolin, not a of botrytis however on the very intense nose. Palate was medium sweetness, uncouctous and well-balanced despite the low acidity; the balance is more like that of a Sauterne. Intense lingering finish. Very good and when you get down to it, for the price quite good value. (2282 views)
Tasted by mdavis on 1/22/2006: Dark gold in color, very little oxidation, strong almond on the nose and palate, with great balanace, and a long, lingering finish. This is showing really well, but will probably age for a couple of decades... (3900 views)
Tasted by cgfrendly on 4/3/2005: Dark golden color; sweet but well balanced; (2643 views)

Zind-Humbrecht

Producer website
Domaine Zind-Humbrecht is one of the stars of the Alsace, in the northeastern corner of France. Fought over for decades by Germany and France, the region, according to Robert M. Parker Jr., “is perhaps the most underrated and underutilized source of great white wines in the world.” Zind-Humbrecht was created in 1959 by Leonard Humbrecht and Genevieve Zind. Their son Olivier is now instrumental in running the 99-acre estate, which the family still owns. Like many Alsatian producers, Zind-Humbrecht makes white wines in varying degrees of sweetness, from dessert whites to very dry wines. The vineyards are planted to 30% Riesling, 30% Gewurztraminer, 29% Pinot Gris, and smaller amounts of Pinot Noir, Muscat, Chardonnay, Auxerrois and Pinot Blanc. Up to 18,000 cases are produced annually. Many are Grand Crus and single vineyard bottlings.

Pinot Gris

From Pinot Gris Wikipedia entry:
Wines made from the Pinot gris vary greatly and are dependent on the region and wine making style they are from. Alsatian Pinot gris are medium to full bodied wines with a rich, somewhat floral bouquet. They tend to be spicy in comparisons with other Pinot gris. While most Pinot gris are meant to be consumed early, Alsatian Pinot gris can age well. German Pinot gris are more full-bodied with a balance of acidity and slight sweetness. In Oregon the wines are medium bodied with a yellow to copper-pink color and aromas of pear, apple, and/or melon. In California, the Pinot gris are more light bodied with a crisp, refreshing taste with some pepper and arugula notes. The Pinot grigio style of Italy is a light-bodied, often lean wine that is light in color with sometimes spritzy flavors that can be crisp and acidic. Although this wine can be very sweet, it will begin to lose its acidity when it is nearly ripe.

Pinot gris is considered an "early to market wine" that can be bottled and out on the market within 4–12 weeks after fermentation.
