Tasted by nywine68 on 12/23/2023 & rated 94 points: Very smooth, in a perfect drinking window. Blackberries and earth notes. (164 views)
Tasted by thalver on 10/31/2023: A bit hot. Quite smooth. A little bit pruney. For my tastes, this wine was much more appealing when young, bright and vivacious. Sadly, that's probably the case with a lot of us as well. (206 views)
Tasted by andtheodor on 8/15/2022 & rated 80 points: Raisiny, awkwardly bitter, syrupy, try-hard wine. I like the 2006 of this, but while some of the savory nuance still comes through here, it's overshadowed but power and ripeness and I can't get past it. (1099 views)
Tasted by jshufelt on 2/13/2022 & rated 93 points: Decanted one hour before service - seemed about right. In the glass, pink-tinted auburn at the rim, shading to dark magenta-shaded auburn at the core. On the nose, reductive port-like notes, with currants and blackberries underneath. On the palate, more port and prune notes, but if anything, those accentuated the notes of grenache, blackberries, raspberries, and bacon lurking in the background. Still some tannins on the long finish, but they're definitely settling down. If you haven't opened a bottle, now might be the time, perhaps two hours in the decanter rather than one to be safe.  Tasted by mhensel on 4/13/2021 & rated 95 points: Deep transparent red, showing signs of maturity --- Nose fresh, elegant, light, flowery, sour cherry, walnut, some tobacco smoke, a little glue, mahogany, orange peel, some mint aspects, some marzipan, black and green tea --- Palate smooth, like velvet, then strong cherry fruit accompanied by powerful acidity, chewy --- Finishes pretty long on red and black fruit and minerality. Matured beauty. Drink now. Classy and tasty. (1737 views)
Tasted by Christoffer78 on 5/18/2018 & rated 97 points: A true sometimes a bit forgotten gem, the 2007 La Pèira is certainly one of those Grand Vins produced in France. The The eleven years in bottle has increased integration and balance, but there is still youthful fruit and rather vivid tannins. It shows lovely primary fruit and the cellar potential is most likely 10-15+ years. Despite eleven years of age, the wine is still full-bodied and powerful, yet elegant and seamlessly integrated. The velvelty and silky touch has grown stronger and is now the major impression. Comparing to SQN, which highly relevant, the power is there, but with a lovely addition of heather, herbal tones and garrigue. The nose exhibits dark mature fruit, a bit of saddle leather and beautiful tones of violet and flowers. The palate is full throttle but also integrated - all components speak with one voice. Totally brilliant tonight! (2612 views)
Tasted by Christoffer78 on 2/2/2018 & rated 98 points: One of those Grand Vins which has received a lot of merit from renowned epxerts and critics, but is still availble also for the "common wine lover". The 2007 La Pèira continues to prove it is ageworthy and a totally brilliant effort. The 2007 La Pèira exhibits massive and wonderful primary fruit - but there are some signs of maturity starting to emerge with integration and the hard edges showing less power. Still, another 20 years will do it justice. The wine provides a full-bodied and powerful, yet utterly elegant and seamlessly velvety impression. This is an elephant capable of dancing the most beautiful ballet. Power and elegance are combined in a beautiful and intriguing way with lavender, fresh herbs and subtle lovely garrigue adding to the first impression. The nose is meticulously balanced and integrated. The palate is certainly even more integrated compared to my last tasting but it is still a lot of everything with just a tad of hard edges - be it structure and texture. This is world class, there is just no better words to describe it! (3022 views)
Tasted by thalver on 12/28/2017 flawed bottle: I've really enjoyed bottles of this in the past. This one was off. Structure, a bit of a nose, but on the palate the fruit seemed to be absent. None of the usual signs of TCA. It might have gotten very slightly gotten better with time (unlike corked wines) Not undrinkable, but not worth drinking. (2292 views)
Tasted by Christoffer78 on 5/20/2017 & rated 97 points: Amazingly enough, this ten year old bottles shows no signs of ageing. "It is so youg" - one of the guests said out loud. The 2007 La Pèira exhibits massive and wonderful primary fruit. Our guesstimate tonight is another 20 years will do it justice, if you can just keep your fingers away for that long. Further to this, the wine gives a full-bodied and powerful, yet elegant and seamlessly velvety impression. This is an elephant capable of dancing the most beautiful ballet. As said many times before for those of you who know my TNs by now, I often say that elegance and power are difficult to combine and found only in the best wines of the world. This is certainly true for the 2007 La Pèira. Lavender, fresh herbs and subtle lovely garrigue all add to the first impression. The nose is exquisitely balanced and integrated. It exhibits a richness which is just top notch. The palate is becoming more integrated but it is still a lot of everything with no hard edges. There are still no better words to use: This is world class! (score is 97+) (2870 views)
Tasted by RPerro on 5/13/2017 & rated 94 points: This was a massive wine. We ran it through a Menu decanter and back into the bottle about 4 or 5 times to open it up and burn off the alcohol heat faster. Did the trick! Super dark purple, almost black in color. Rich nose of black fruits, garrigue, spice and alcohol heat. In the mouth, it's just palate coating. Huge masses of black fruit, that lovely French garrigue and baking spices, with a touch of dark bakers chocolate on the finish. Extremely full bodied wine, with a touch of drying tannins hanging in there, even after the decanting. This has a decade and then some to go in it's life. Drink 2020-2035. (2289 views)
Tasted by Christoffer78 on 12/26/2016 & rated 97 points: Amazingly enough, the almost ten years in bottle have done little if nothing to the wine in terms of ageing. This is like a French version of iconic wines from California that I am also rather fond of... The 07 LA Pèira is still "youngish" and shows tons of primary fruit(!). The cellar potential is most likely 15-20+ years given tonights impression. Just as always with this particular effort it is full-bodied and powerful, yet elegant and seamlessly velvety. Elegance and power are difficult to combine and found only in the best wines of the world. Sun warm heather, fresh herbs and garrigue all add to the massive fruit. The nose is profoundly integrated and exhibits a richness which is truly mind boggling. The palate is certainly a lot of everything and best described as full throttle. But just as the nose it is also seamlessly integrated and all components speak with one voice. There are not better words to use: This is world class! (2663 views)
Tasted by MaineMark on 7/10/2016 & rated 93 points: Deep dark ruby and dark berry fruits. Very well balanced. This is very good now, but I think it could be great in another 5 years. (2342 views)
Tasted by manny651 on 4/3/2016 & rated 93 points: wow, really good (2494 views)
Tasted by mjf@ulkner on 3/30/2016 & rated 94 points: Dark and brooding. Licorice and sweet ripe plum notes. Full bodied, drinks more like a California Rhone. Very smooth, very nice. (2182 views)
Tasted by jshufelt on 3/11/2016 & rated 92 points: Pop and pour into a decanter: it needed much more time with air, but so it goes. In the glass, a deep, opaque purplish-red with the faintest suggestion of auburn at the rim. On the nose, a complex mix of forest scents and currants. On the palate, equal parts grenache liqueur, bacon fat, and raspberries, with assertive tannins through the mid-palate and on the long finish. While it's drinkable at some level, it's really not ready. Five more years in the cellar, at least. (2076 views)
Tasted by Quarked on 1/25/2016 & rated 92 points: This was decanted for several hours before dinner, after which the nose was a panoply of fruits and meat, very complex and ever changing. The palate was not quite its equal, but was still very complex, with blue fruits dominating but sharing space with red and black fruits and garrigue. However, after a few more hours it started to turn harsh and hot -- not what I was hoping for, so we didn't finish drinking the bottle. On the second night, it was smooth as silk with a fantastic mouthfeel, and a nose that was dominated by iron and meat. But the taste was dominated by earth and mushroom, but with little else going on. I really enjoyed this both nights, but would have liked the complexity of night #1 with the smooth body of night #2.  Tasted by loantaka on 1/10/2016 & rated 92 points: Started jammy. Incredible deep nose of dark fruit. After hour of decant, became more earthy but heat was more evident. After two more hours, smoothed out a lot. Will buy another one. (1834 views)
Tasted by thalver on 1/1/2016: First pour after about 3 hours in the decanter came across as full bodied, a bit rustic, and very syrah. Another hour plus in the decanter brought the wine into better balance, as it became smoother, the structure present but not pronounced, a wonderful mouth-feel and lingering finish. A very good, highly rated 2004 Cal cab next to it suddenly seemed coarse and clumsy by comparison. Wine of the night against same very respectable offerings. 94-95ish. (1485 views)
Tasted by Christoffer78 on 9/25/2015 & rated 97 points: La Pèira certainly produces world-class wines, after tonight's tasting of the 2007 La Pèira I am confident about the star level of this producer. The eight years has done little if nothing to the wine. I still find it "youngish"... It shows tons of primary fruit and the cellar potential is most likely 10-15+ years. Despite eight years of age, the wine is still full-bodied and powerful, yet elegant and seamlessly velvety. There is the power found in Sine Qua Non, but with a lovely addition of heather, herbal tones and garrigue. The nose is nicely integrated revealing dark mature fruit, creamy vanilla and a richness which is mind boggling. The palate is certainly full throttle but it is also seamlessly integrated and all components speak with one voice. To spell it out, this is world class. (2240 views)
Tasted by budh on 8/21/2015: One ounce via Coravin PNP. This strikes me as the Cayuse of Languedoc rhone blends - lots of funk and minimal fruit. (I don't care at all for Cayuse, but while this is similar, it doesn't have the awful burnt rubber notes that I have found in every Cayuse I've tried. But I do note that at least one TN for this wine mentions burnt rubber.) Lots of barnyard, meat, blood, menthol, pepper aromas and flavors, with no discernible fruit (it's there in the background, but I can't really identify anything). It's a bit hot (14.5% alcohol and it tastes higher), and the tannins are quite chewy. But it did grow on me with a couple sips, and I imagine that with some air time that it would smooth out a bit. I look forward to having a glass or two next time. (1863 views)

Tasted by galewskj on 1/1/2014: 3 hour decant, not enough. 2 hours additional decant, still not enough or there is nothing in the wine that will come out. Very dark, funky, licorice, meaty, huge tannins, lots of alcohol, dirty, olive. This is too young and I am skeptical that it will ever be a good wine. If scored based on the taste today, 79.  Tasted by 3daywinereview.com on 12/31/2013 & rated 83 points: New Years 2013 at Kevin's (Minneapolis, MN): A strange wine and even stranger Cellar Tracker Average. Hot with spice, gravel and black licorice. If I wanted to teach a class on how an unbalanced wine would appear this would be it. With the cost probably the worst wine of the year. (4084 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 12/31/2013: New Years Eve Celebration Offline (Rocknroller's (Kevin & Vicki's Place)): Inky purple color, a bit murky. Decanted for a total of 5 hours. Followed a glass for 3 hours. This was meaty, inky, and brooding, with jet black fruit on the nose. The palate was extremely hot, very spicy, black fruits, burnt rubber, lots of licorice and very firm, grippy tannins. This was a total mess. I volunteered, read that - nobody else would take the bottle, to see if this got any better over a couple of days. Day 2 was not much different. Day 3 and I could finally at least drink it. The tannins were still very firm but gave up some of their grip, the alcohol integrated better, there was still oak, heavy spice and dominating licorice on the finish. This was still quite murky and funky on the nose as well. Score on day 3 was maybe mid 80's? We'll see if it gets ant better. The only hope for this appears to be significant cellar time.  Tasted by Knicksfan on 12/29/2013 & rated 95 points: I love this wine. Still way too young but the flavor is endless. (3411 views)

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.
