Tasted by StainedGlass on 3/8/2024 & rated 93 points: This was a rich, dark, almost brooding Brunello. Starting to show some age but was in a great spot now. Red cherry, plum, leather. Drink now to 2031. (216 views)
Tasted by jkwoodward on 5/21/2023 & rated 94 points: Great age, wouldn’t go kuch longer. Funk blew off after an hour and was superb. (904 views)
Tasted by jnewman77 on 4/5/2023: Enjoyable bottle of Brunello. Tasty and fully mature. This was kind of dark and brooding initially with lots of mint, damp earth, dark fruit, licorice, and floral notes. With air it freshens up and the fruit becomes a bit more red and the floral notes seem brighter. Seems pretty mature on the palate with good density and balance. Still some tannic structure and definitely better with food. Good stuff that has a ways to go in terms of enjoyable drinking. (708 views)
Tasted by VlgJeff on 2/14/2023 & rated 93 points: A mature bottle of this wine, that after 10-15 minutes of air, was singing a harmonious Valentine's Day duet with our wonderful (restaurant) Lasagna Bolognese. The decant allowed the wine to darken and open, while separating some sediment. The color was a medium violet to a faded rim. The nose yielded dark red fruit, earth and touches of cedar and leather. The medium bodied (and smooth) palate showed lots of spice, red cherry, dried cherry, and earth. The acidity was juicy but balancing and there was just a hint of tannin on the finish. I would imagine that this wine has several more years ahead of it but is beginning to show some evidence of its 16+ year age. (737 views)
Tasted by Joelene on 3/6/2022 & rated 92 points: A modern yet pretty example of a Brunello, enough acidity to tell you what it is, plenty of red cherry fruit, some old world characteristics but some
warmth and a silky mouthfeel that had one blind taster think it was something from Napa. Still very good but better examples can be found at a more reasonable price. (1502 views)
Tasted by Filippo on 12/27/2021: Strange bottle. Great upon opening, then decanted and turned dumb for a few hours. Eventually turned good again but not as good as right after opening. I am not giving any score here. (1224 views)
Tasted by isbjoern on 6/20/2021 & rated 90 points: Blind tasting of six top level Tuscan wines with friends. This was the only bottle that did not perform great. It clearly showed first signs of oxidation and a bit of a brettanomyces taint joining the strong oak flavors. The fruit was not as bright as it should be. Texture and mouthfeel are excellent, but the flavors were off. As a result, the group ranked it last place of the six wines. Off bottle? - 90 points (1333 views)
Tasted by Wine Warrior 1 on 4/24/2021 & rated 93 points: Super pleased with this Brunello. Dark opaque color, bouquet of blackberry, cocoa nibs and oak. Really nice fruit, with integrated fine tannins. A touch of raisin to show its age. Really enjoyable wine to drink right now. (1423 views)
Tasted by dream on 2/28/2021 & rated 92 points: A very good example of this wine which is fully mature now showing flavors of dark fruits, forest floor and charcoal minerals. Full and rich with ample concentration and complexity on the long finish with notes of dark spices, leathers, ash and smoky oak. Delicious especially with red-sauced Italian food. (1646 views)
Tasted by John McCabe on 1/31/2021 & rated 97 points: Better than the previous bottle I had - possibly because I had it settle upright for a few days before opening. The age on this was evident, everything so resolved, but there was also so much intensity and vibrancy to the fruit. What a treat. I tend to love the '06 vintage and this was a great example of why. (1603 views)
Tasted by wayfarer on 12/12/2020 & rated 94 points: Decanted one hour. Tasted on open, a bit tight, dark, plum, earth. After decant, through dinner and after, opened up delightfully. Lovely essence and definition bringing dark red fruit, black cherry, light plum, backdrop of mineral, leather, wood, coffee, bit of spice to the nose and palate. Had an effortless poised expression: balanced, subtle and still direct and full. Some tannin there, more apparent without food. Great complement to a leek/broccoli/gorgonzola pie. (1347 views)
Tasted by BordeauxNut on 11/17/2020 & rated 93 points: Very interesting nose — some cumin seed, chocolate, bit of coffee, and black fruits. Ripe and round, the fruit is just starting to recede. Still fairly lush and juicy, but better a couple of years ago. Nice finish — very enjoyable. (1476 views)
Tasted by Castello della Gatta on 5/30/2020 & rated 96 points: Just a beautiful wine in drinking window. Flowers, black plums and earthy notes. I was impressed by the fullness of mid-palate. Just the right balance of everything one excepts from Brunello di Montalcino. Outstanding! (2042 views)
Tasted by dream on 3/29/2020 & rated 91 points: Potent nose of black cherry and coffee. This is an atypical version of this wine which usually leans towards complexity and elegance with age. The ‘06 is full-bodied, mouth-filling and very ripe with deep flavors of blackeberry fruit along with strong notes of coffee and bitter chocolate. There is good acidity underneath and excellent intensity but I think I preferred it a couple of years ago as it’s kind of losing a bit of its balance. Still quite delicious but this is one vintage of this great Brunello that I think should be drunk now. 91- (1565 views)
Tasted by kronfeld on 3/6/2020: Getting pruney. Drink up. (1256 views)
Tasted by dream on 11/9/2019 & rated 92 points: This is such an atypical vintage of Montosoli because the wine is heavy and ripe with a dark woods intensity and more black-fruited than red. That being said, it’s hauntingly delicious with a big, thick texture and sweet dark fruits with lovely notes of forest floor, tar, charcoal and rose petals. The finish is becoming very complex especially with a long decant. A lovely wine with rich Italian foods. (2081 views)
Tasted by John McCabe on 11/6/2019 & rated 95 points: Luxurious, big and deep, has a savory tone, really extended layers of dark fruit with a burned leather aspect. Some dryness and acidity too. I love the '06 vintage generally and this is a good example. I had the pleasure of doing a blind vertical of Altesino brunellos - about 10 of them a few months ago and the three Montosolis stood out. I think even this would benefit from a proper decant as even at the tasting the relative quality of the Montosolis only became readily apparent after two hours. (1620 views)
Tasted by Milos on 2/11/2019 & rated 94 points: From the first note the wine showed it sophistication and elegance. Wild cherry and black current fruit with mineral notes and lifted by flower notes; a classic Barolo rose note makes an appearance. How bizarre for Brunello. The palate is structured with tannins still there but dusty and fine and enveloped in fruit. Finish is long, literally minutes long, and balanced. And this is still a youngster. No hint on secondary notes. Stunning! (1994 views)
Tasted by dream on 12/23/2018: Brett - affected bottle (1678 views)
Tasted by cephomer on 9/13/2018 & rated 93 points: RF supplied for Blanco's WH wine dinner, and def 1 of the WsOTN. Ripe red and black fruits, some mint and eucalyptus, meat and earthy mushrooms. Excellent concentration and all elements nicely integrated. The wine is drinking quite well right now and has much good time ahead of it. Very enjoyable. (2026 views)
Tasted by Vino921 on 8/29/2018 & rated 90 points: I have mixed feelings about this wine. It's a nice brunello but not sure the QPR is there. I was just expecting something a little more from the bottle...will try again in a year or two (1599 views)
Tasted by dream on 6/22/2018 & rated 94 points: I just adore this wine which has dark ripe fruits along with great mineral lift. There are decadent flavors of forest floor, dark chocolate, tobacco and licorice. The texture is rough and silky at the same time and there’s a wildness to this wine that is so enticing to me. Finishes With sweet tannins and deep notes of dark spices and potent rocky minerals. Bring this wine in a flask on a wild boar hunt and you’ll feel like your in the dark ages. Easily one of the top 5 terroirs in Brunello. 94+ (2008 views)
Tasted by wineguy75 on 12/20/2017 & rated 93 points: 90 min decant. Got much more oak than last bottle. Should develop further with a few more years of bottle age. (2870 views)
Tasted by dream on 10/26/2017 & rated 93 points: A big, brooding wine that’s quite diffeent from the ‘04 which is more fine and elegant where this is exotic and wild. Strong nose of licorice and forest floor. Quite full-bodied with delicious flavors of smoky dark fruits, tobacco and pine/forest floor. Really maturing now but still with a tannic finish and strong notes of licorice and dark minerals. With pot roast and a warm fire in winter, this is a hedonistic, primal pleasure. (2567 views)
Tasted by dream on 10/6/2017 & rated 93 points: Quite a big, thick wine with lots of delicious smoky black cherry fruit along with notes of eucalyptus and licorice. Really ripe and mouth-coating with full but smooth tannins on the finish. Went really well with rich pastas and meats and while this is a bit of an extreme style of Brunello, it's just so damn tasty. The Altesino winery overlooks the breathtaking UNESCO-heritage landscape of south-central Tuscany in the Montalcino region not far from Siena. Its beautiful estate is crowned with the 15th century Palazzo Altesi, which is the centerpiece of its winery operations. Additional modern winemaking structures are integrated into the hillside alongside it.

Altesino’s flagship wine is its single-vineyard Brunello di Montalcino “Montosoli,” made from 100% Sangiovese grapes cultivated in its most prestigious vineyard. An ambassador for Italian wine around the world and one of Montalcino’s most sought-after wines, the “Montosoli” Brunello repeatedly earns glowing reviews from the world’s top wine publications. Robert Parker called Altesino’s Montosoli “one of the most distinct and profound wines, with delicate floral and mineral nuances that are elegantly interwoven within a thicker textural consistency.” As Altesino’s flagship wine it best exemplifies the unrivaled elegance, richness and drinkability of the estate’s style.

Altesino embodies tradition and history, and at the same time perceptive innovation. Where international renown for Brunello di Montalcino has nudged many winemakers towards conservatism, Altesino has always blazed new wine trails. Founded in 1972 by Milanese entrepreneur Giulio Consonno, in 1975 the winery was the first in Brunello to introduce the concept of single-vineyard crus with its famous Montosoli bottling. The winery was also the first to experiment with French barrique in 1979, yielding wines with more fruit and complexity – a critical turning point in Brunello’s history. And, in 1985, Altesino pioneered the concept of futures in Brunello, or the selling of wines before they are bottles or released.

When Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini bought the winery in 2002, her decision to keep the only winemaker that Altesino has ever known, Claudio Basla, was central to their ongoing success delivering consistently high quality wines in the Altesino style. To supplement the team she hired Guido Orzolesi, who works as Marketing Director alongside Claudio and Enologist Paolo Caciorgna.

In addition to the Montosoli and the regular Brunello and Brunello Riserva made from Sangiovese, the team also grows several other varieties and produces Rosso di Montalcino, Super Tuscans Palazzo Altesi and Alte d’Altesi, Rosso and Bianco I.G.T., Vin Santo d’Altesi, and a selection of grappa, brandy, and extra virgin olive oil.

Should you visit Tuscany, tours of Altesino’s vineyards and cellar — bringing you through the vine rows before you visit the winemaking and maturation cellars — can be arranged here.

Sangiovese

SANGIOVESE: (Pronounced "sahn-joh-vhe-se").
Sangiovese - Italy's claim to fame, the pride of Tuscany. Traditionally made, the wines are full of cherry fruit, earth, and cedar. It produces Chianti (Classico), Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montepulciano, Montefalco Rosso, and many others. Sangiovese is also the backbone in many of the acclaimed, modern-styled "Super-Tuscans", where it is blended with Bordeaux varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc) and typically aged in French oak barrels, resulting a wine primed for the international market in the style of a typical California cabernet: oaky, high-alcohol, and a ripe, jammy, fruit-forward profile.[16]

Semi-classic grape grown in the Tuscany region of Italy. Used to produce the Chianti and other Tuscan red wines. Has many clonal versions, two of which seem to predominate. The Sangiovese Grosso clone Brunello variety is used for the dark red, traditionally powerful and slow-maturing "Brunello di Montalcino" wine. The other is the Sangiovese Piccolo, also known under the historical synonym name Sangioveto, used for standard Chianti Classico DOC wines. Old vine derived wine is often used in the better versions, needing several years ageing to reach peak. A third clone, Morellino, is used in a popular wine blend with the same name found in the southern part of the province. Recent efforts in California with clones of this variety are very promising, producing medium-bodied reds with rich cherry or plumlike flavors and aromas. Among the available clonal versions are R6 and R7, derived from the Montalcino region of Italy, having average productivity/ripening and producing small berries on medium size clusters. R10 and R24 are well-recommended. R23, listed as deriving from the Emilia-Romagna region, has good vigor with medium-small clusters with earlier ripening. R102 derives from the Montepulciano region and reported to have average vigor with moderate productivity that results in higher sugar levels and good acidity from medium-small berries on medium-small clusters. Has synonym name of Nielluccio where grown in Corsica.
