Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 86.8 pts. and median of 88 pts. in 108 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Psdycp on 1/13/2019 & rated 88 points: The nose is rather rustic, there are notes of stewed blue berries and plums, barnyard and old leather with hints of tobacco in the undertones. The same stewed plums with some sour cherries, smoked minerals and old leather flavours filled the palate which is rich and smooth. Clearly the age of the wine is showing on the palate and the rounded structure. Transitions from entry to finish is slow but there is no gap. The finish, though still has some chalky tannins, is decently deep and lingering. Ready to drink now with just 30 minutes in the decanter as it is peaking and it should stay there for a few more years, hopefully the tannins will be resolved and blend into the structure after that.  Tasted by TallDan on 9/29/2016: Sadly, this seems to be past it's prime. (4102 views)
Tasted by Zorg on 11/20/2015 & rated 90 points: Much better than last year. Oak and slightly sweet fruit. Perfect acidity. Will probably hold for several years but is at a very good stage right now and I don't think it will get any better. (4992 views)
Tasted by Zorg on 12/28/2014 & rated 88 points: Good after a few hours in the decanter, but before that almost undrinkable because of the heat from the alcohol. Ready to drink now but will save my last bottle 3-4 years. (5878 views)
Tasted by redz on 8/18/2014 & rated 90 points: dependable cab (4794 views)
Tasted by MoreWinePlease on 5/21/2014 & rated 89 points: Despite Galloni's 94 rating on this wine I'd give it an 89. Great color, good fruit, balance, nice finish and a value for Napa juice at $24+. Nothing too flashy or out of kilter. (3528 views)
Tasted by WY Leonidas on 4/28/2014 & rated 89 points: Good structure. Silky smooth jammy plumb and dark red berries with some herbal notes and dark chocolate. Very drinkable big Cab. (3637 views)
Tasted by Central Coast Wino on 1/19/2014 & rated 89 points: Very approachable, well balanced, flavorful, with decent structure and smooth tannins. (3204 views)

Tasted by JoshA on 7/25/2013 & rated 89 points: Always enjoy this easy-to-like well-balanced wine with ripe fruit and soft tannins with chocolate notes. (3372 views)
Tasted by DRS-Inc on 6/21/2013 & rated 87 points: Tasted at 2013 CAL-ITAL Summer Wine Fest & Jazz Reception at the Great Lawn in the Golden Nugget Casino, Atlantic City, NJ. Some leather & oak infused flavors w/dark berry & cassis fruit. (2846 views)
Tasted by StefanAkiko on 6/19/2013 & rated 85 points: Pulls my thoughts towards Velvet Elvis...
Dark red.
Young and dark-fruity CS-nose with grassy/herbal streaks.
Mouth: Velvety structure of plums and pure, red berries. M+ tannin, M+acids, long finish. Quite a well made factory wine. I'd happily buy this again. Lovely! Should go extremely well with BBQ...
Has the stuffing to evolve and keep for a while. (2987 views)
Tasted by grayfont on 6/12/2013 & rated 87 points: nothing special but nothing wrong with this - it's on the light side for a cab and relatively restrained in terms of oak. A solidly made wine that will drink well with your dinner. Just no wow factor. A solid citizen. (2484 views)
Tasted by Blauweiss on 5/27/2013 & rated 89 points: Consistent with prevoius note, still quite fresh and appealing! (2309 views)
Tasted by RedValues on 5/27/2013 & rated 82 points: Decanted an hour, semi-transparent ruby color, bitter nose, medium mouthfeel, some tannins, too much oak and green notes on finish. (2934 views)
Tasted by hubas on 5/10/2013 & rated 90 points: Lots of oak and black currant and some eucalyptus (2815 views)
Tasted by VinoServant on 5/3/2013 & rated 89 points: It is important to note that when I opened and decanted this wine it is very warm in Northern California, and I think this is a reason why the wine was softer and more approachable on Day 1. See my note from 1/26/13. Really well made. The wine had notes of tobacco that mixed well with herbs, spice and dark fruit. (2745 views)
Tasted by HenrikJ on 4/30/2013 & rated 86 points: Quite fresh and berry stained bouquet with a hint of oak and vanilla, some bell peppers, some cassis, a decent complexity on the nose here. Palate has alright balance. Fruit forward and ripe as expected with sweet dark berry flavours but a balanced structure. Falls short on body and finish, but a good everyday Cabernet. (2794 views)
Tasted by The Necs on 4/24/2013 & rated 87 points: Easy drinking and pleasant, but there are plenty of better values. There are lots of wines of equal quality at much better prices. (2004 views)
Tasted by Blauweiss on 4/5/2013 & rated 89 points: Fruit and oak on the nose, lots of vanilla! Typical cab fruit, long and ripe, but with really refreshing acidity and well integrated tannins. Classic rather than muscular, really nice! (2000 views)
Tasted by RobertWinesWeLove on 4/2/2013 & rated 85 points: Stor frukt, svartvinbär, tillgängligt. Något obalanserat med mycket god doft men inte lika bra smak. (2410 views)
Tasted by ADiamond on 3/20/2013 & rated 84 points: Not a lot of body, nice fruit, no tannins, but lacked tremendous body and character. (1705 views)
Tasted by Jona on 2/17/2013 & rated 78 points: Hmm.., I've tried other vintages and liked it quite much but this, not at the same level. Felt it too robust... (1877 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
