Tasted by wino_tim on 12/24/2022 & rated 93 points: Pale gold with reflections of yellow. A deep and sensuous Smaragd, this offers pronounced aromas of super ripe tropical fruit, apricot, grilled pineapple, baked mirabelle, ginger, saffron, yellow flowers, citrus and a touch of crushed rock minerality. Rich, lush and full bodied on the palate; this is balanced with medium to medium+ acidity but its texture is still one of plush voluptuousness. There is plenty of gas left in the tank here.  Tasted by Bob H on 11/28/2020: Wow, this is delicious! I’ve got some boneless Heritage pork chops marinating in soy sauce and Dijon mustard that I will be throwing on the grill soon and this should be perfect with those. Dry on the palate, yet showing some real substance. A lengthy finish - hard to imagine this getting any better, but it doesn’t feel tired either, so drink or hold. (1025 views)
Tasted by Barry Rothof on 11/4/2018 & rated 92 points: From Magnum nice and refreshing with yellow fruits and minerals (1348 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 7/8/2017 & rated 92 points: Regular dinner group (@ PZ): In the bouquet yellow fruits and minerals. Slightly sweet start with ripe white and tropical yellow fruits, good acidity and soft bitterness. (1868 views)
Tasted by Outplaying on 8/15/2016: Hirtzberger Hochrain (Sovana Bistro, Kennett Square, PA): From a day two glass. Really nice, intense nose with some herbal/floral and wet stone/slate notes. Today the wine is a little softer, rounder. Citrus and tart tangerine. Really nice and still very young. (2157 views)
Tasted by LW31 on 5/29/2015 & rated 90 points: As usual a seductive wine. Apricot and peach. Intense but one layer. (2188 views)
Tasted by isbjoern on 9/23/2014 & rated 90 points: Salon Graz 2014: Slightly green and not so ripe this year with herbal notes, citrus flavors and a nice floral taste. Also great minerality. Not as powerful as usual for a Hirtzberger wine and less expressive than some of the other Austrian Rieslings tonight, but it should come together with more bottle age. - 90+ points (2093 views)
Tasted by missatiejacket on 9/6/2014: Decanted about 20 minutes so far. My first Hirtzberger, and this is amazing. Exotic nose filled with herbal aromas of mint, dill, parsley, and cilantro, along with peach, green apple, and hints of pineapple. It's like a chameleon, showing me different elements each time I put my nose in the glass. There is an extreme sense of refinement, not in a "made" sort of way, but in an elegant, understated way. The palate follows suit, particularly with that sense of refinement, although it does feel like things might be able to come together just a little bit more with time and be a touch more cohesive. I don't want that to seem negative; this stuff is wonderful right now, it's just that there's a WHOLE lot going on, and I think it will all meld together a bit after a few years in the bottle. Already, this is outstanding+, though, and an example of one of the truly great dry Rieslings of the world. outstanding++, potential for improvement. (1973 views)
Tasted by yesh on 4/22/2014 & rated 97 points: Tasted at winery. Great wine. Strong citrus fruits, peach, apricot. (1916 views)
Tasted by wineamateur on 5/4/2013: Wachau Spring Wine Festival (Wachauer Weinfrühling) (The Wachau): From a vineyard just after St Michael as one heads downstream from Spitz. This was delicately perfumed, with a floral nose and a dreamy palate. It was subtle but very persistent, with a long long aftertaste. € 34. ***** (2792 views)

Smaragd

Wikipedia about Smaragd (german)
Google translation in English of the German Wikipedia about Smagard

From what I understand, these wines (very ripe, dry, late-harvest, etc.) were going to be designated Honivogl (after a kind of bird found in or near the vineyards, meaning 'honey bird'. However, the Honivogl family was involved in the wine trade in Austria and objected that this would cause confusion and weakening of their trademark. Another creature was therefore selected (the green lizard called Smaragd) to be the mascot (sort of ) for this kind of wine in the Wachau.
