Tasted by The Drunken Cyclist on 10/14/2023 & rated 95 points: Retail $50(?). Under cork. I visited the winery nearly a decade ago (April 2014) with my lovely wife and we tasted wines in the Knoll family kitchen with Anja Knoll, the lovely wife of legend Emmerich Knoll. It was a crazy (?) bizarre (?) tasting with Anja's kids running all over the place, but the wines were absolutely stellar. We bought three of the Riesling, the Chardonnay, and the Grüner, all Smaragd, all stellar. A bit golden in color, with tons of citrus fruit and petrol notes on the nose and the palate is glorious with ample fruit, intense tartness, and a finish that will top most. Outstanding.

Tasted by Tim Heaton on 5/28/2020: Great, as always. Quite approachable right now, seems already in the preferred plateau. Rich, with equally ample acidity. Med+ finish. Enjoyed watching it evolve over 3 hours open. Like a favorite pair of shoes, so darn comfortable. Now and the next few years. highly recommended (1395 views)
Tasted by Yassine23 on 6/7/2019: Lots of apricot pith and stone fruit and white flowers. Long finish. Quite powerful but light on it's feet at the same time. Needs more time though very pleasant already. (985 views)
Tasted by cweiss on 11/25/2018: Dry but not austere and beginning to show some age, in a good way. Plenty of Riesling fruit, very good acidity. With Alla, Michelle and AJ, paired with mildly spiced Indian vegetarian dishes, which was a good match. (1115 views)
Tasted by acyso on 1/17/2018 & rated 88 points: Flickinger Tasting at The Casino (Chicago, IL): I preferred the fleshier 2015 to this vintage. Like the 2012 Selektion, I thought that this had a really distracting aldehydic quality. But there was also some nice balance between fruit and acid. This never got waxy or heavy though. (2354 views)
Tasted by wineamateur on 5/11/2017: A bit riper and blowsier than I really like my Riesling from the Wachau, but served cooler a couple of days after opening and everything was much more in balance. Steamed pears and peaches give this quite a fruity aromatic profile. Medium weight but persistent in the mouth, with a meaty undertow that was not quite in place (1673 views)
Tasted by jmcmchi on 7/16/2016 & rated 91 points: Elegant nose, fruit and slate; complex palate with fruit underlying lime, slate and chalk into a long finish (1387 views)
Tasted by Frank&Steph on 5/16/2016 & rated 93 points: que c'est bon du riesling provenant de ce coin de continent (1723 views)
Tasted by rossi.wine on 4/30/2016 & rated 93 points: Ripe fruit, still composed, slightly spicy and mineral on the nose. On the palate good fruit, still a little tight. Fresh and mineral. Vibrant finish. 92-93+ (1504 views)
Tasted by EirikM on 8/22/2015 & rated 90 points: Stone fruit with a pit-like bitterness. Citrus over wet stone. Quite powerful but also somewhat stern, -not a whole lot of charm here. Quite decent complexity though. (1275 views)
Tasted by MNig on 8/1/2015 & rated 93 points: Sensational bouquet of ripe stone fruits, apricots, quince, white peaches, meadow herbs, slate and wet pebbles. Juicy and beautiful flow with lively acid, firm and full body, and well-integrated alcohol. Good attack on the palate with yellow fruits, stone fruits, slate and savoury herbs. Great creamy texture and flow. Long-lasting aftertaste with enough potential for another 8 years.

Tasted by qcwino on 4/3/2015: Apricot, pear, flowers, wet stone. Slight bitterness on the finish. (993 views)
Tasted by GTFreek on 1/26/2015: Blind tasted. Peach, orange zest, apricot, white flowers, almonds, vanilla, tangerine. Mod plus to high acidity, moderate alcohol. Guessed Riesling but said Alsace. (951 views)
Excellent

Tasted by rossi.wine on 6/28/2014 & rated 94 points: Tropical fruit notes, saline, stone fruit, slightly floral. Very round and charming already, long finish. 93-94+ (1073 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 5/22/2014 & rated 93 points: A private dinner (Restaurant Librije's Zusje Amsterdam, Amsterdam, NL): Wonderful ripe and fleshy fruit, elegant frame, freshness and minerality, avoids any excess weight or power, displays classical finesse married to lovely intensity. Very young, but forward and already very attractive. (1231 views)
Tasted by wineamateur on 5/4/2013: Wachau Spring Wine Festival (Wachauer Weinfrühling) (The Wachau): A forward, perfumed and exotic nose with pineapple, papaya and mango. Delicate, subtle and yet intense on the palate. Very fine. € 26. ***** (2288 views)

Smaragd

Wikipedia about Smaragd (german)

From what I understand, these wines (very ripe, dry, late-harvest, etc.) were going to be designated Honivogl (after a kind of bird found in or near the vineyards, meaning 'honey bird'. However, the Honivogl family was involved in the wine trade in Austria and objected that this would cause confusion and weakening of their trademark. Another creature was therefore selected (the green lizard called Smaragd) to be the mascot (sort of ) for this kind of wine in the Wachau.
