Community Tasting Notes (average 89.8 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 363 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Senso-beak on 11/27/2023 & rated 90 points: Opened and poured. Very dark to pink on the rim. Humid boysenberry and marionberry on the nose. Youthful and deeply lush fruited. Full bodied and dense jammy wine. This is nice in that the alcohol doesn't overpower the fruit. Smooth reds and blacks on the finish. Looks like it hit a dumb phase for a spell based on past reviews but now it's singing. (271 views)
Tasted by malvasia8796 on 8/30/2023 flawed bottle: Very much past it's prime. Decanted and drank over two days. (338 views)
Tasted by West Coast Wine on 1/1/2023 & rated 92 points: Last time I had this was about 2-3 years ago and this was the last of the bunch. This was tasting much better so the last must have been in a bad phase and it has definitely evolved nicely. Fresher on the nose than last time around with more red fruit and some spices. Alcohol has integrated and not the fruit is more vibrant. Would say it has more years ahead but this is in a great place right now so at 10 yrs for the Juvenile I would drink up. (745 views)
Tasted by Ridgerunner on 3/7/2022 & rated 93 points: Who says these wines won't age... wish i had another six to try over another handful or so years. (1028 views)
Tasted by quincow2 on 5/31/2021: Wow! Wonderful edge and complexity. I’m glad I forgot this case down in my 55 degree crawl space. (1261 views)
Tasted by BGK810 on 5/10/2021 & rated 87 points: Interesting how there’s bottle variation. One year ago I tasted this and declared it over-the-hill. Just found another bottle and it was still tasting pretty good. Lots of spice and dark fruit flavors. (1068 views)
Tasted by Eigerdog on 11/25/2020 & rated 87 points: Past it’s prime for drinking. Alcohol and sour cherry. Not much else. (1244 views)
Tasted by BGK810 on 5/24/2020 & rated 80 points: On its downhill swing now. No longer enjoyable. (1240 views)
Tasted by rwrobinson on 9/22/2019 & rated 92 points: Really held up well, very nice finish. (1550 views)
Tasted by West Coast Wine on 2/1/2019 & rated 88 points: Ripe fruit and raisins on the nose. Starting to get that “Port” like quality. Tannins and acidity have resolved as did the alcohol. Rich ripe fruit. Slight raisin, blackberry, spices and fairly short finish. Would drink now and over next few years. Have had other Juveniles that have aged better and think this is just a result of the vintage. (1916 views)
Tasted by Cf_robert on 1/12/2019 & rated 91 points: At its peak! Drink now (1720 views)
Tasted by btock on 7/21/2018 & rated 90 points: My final bottle from a 6-pack of this one. Has been fun to observe over time. This was probably the best showing as the wine had softened just enough and was more approachable. Served at a nice cellar temperature and enjoyed along side simple things from the grill. Black cherry, mild smoky notes, balanced mouthfeel and alc % in check. Drinking nicely now, think it's likely at peak. (2169 views)
Tasted by Ketch1288 on 3/20/2018 & rated 92 points: Juvenile is a top notch release. Drinking great (882 views)
Tasted by as4beatles on 11/25/2017 & rated 90 points: Big bold zin. Just right for the food. (2415 views)
Tasted by Ceo on 10/17/2017 & rated 92 points: Better with age!!🍷🍷. Cheers to all! (2495 views)
Tasted by bjamesclark on 9/9/2017 & rated 90 points: Multiple hour decant.
A blend of multiple young vines Zinfandel.
Aromas show raspberry and petite strawberry that are reminiscent of buttery jam thumbprint cookies with scents of pomegranate, pepper spice, dark loamy earth and a hint of herbs and toasted anise.
On the palate this wine shows a striking round texture with moderate acidity. Flavors echo the nose with jammy raspberry and strawberry notes. Shortbread cookies, spice, anise and earth fall in line as well. Lengthy on the finish with a lingering touch of herbs and berry acidity on the back palate. (2327 views)
Tasted by cstir on 8/31/2017 & rated 89 points: Drank the 2012 Old Vines and Juvenile side-by-side. Four people drinking; all of us felt the wines were more similar than distinct. Good balanced flavor; tart dark red fruit; Juvenile may have been slightly smoother; both were enjoyable. (2294 views)
Tasted by bbcc66 on 7/23/2017 & rated 89 points: Decanted 1.5 hr. Consistent smooth darker fruit & plum tastes. Not much spice. (2250 views)
Tasted by Winedog1 on 7/23/2017 & rated 91 points: Black pepper, orange juice, black tea, canned black olive, black cherry, pencil lead, strawberry, boysenberry, and raspberry. (1655 views)
Tasted by Winedog1 on 7/16/2017 & rated 91 points: Smells like bacon fat. Tastes like plum, black tea, vanilla bean, and white pepper. (1494 views)
Tasted by travelme on 7/5/2017 & rated 88 points: Tasted at a party and it had a lot of sediment in this bottle and was a little hot on the palate. I noticed black cherry and blackberry on the palate. It was brought to a July 4th party. I would drink them if you have them. Honestly, I was glad there were other much better wines to drink at this event. This was slightly disappointing given the vintage and great winemaking at Turley. It wasn't my bottle so not sure if storage was an issue. (1407 views)
Tasted by wine4lux on 7/5/2017 & rated 90 points: Limited aromatics, fruit appears on the palate, primarily dark or dried cherry and blackberries; no notes of pepper or smoke or spiciness. Smooth, straight-forward wine. Opened on 7/2, consumed about 2/3 of the bottle, kept in fridge until finishing it on 7/5. No real differences in flavor profile or complexity on either tasting. (1364 views)
Tasted by Winedog1 on 7/3/2017 & rated 91 points: More complex because of the age? More depth of taste. However, the Banshee was better. (1069 views)
Tasted by Ridgerunner on 6/19/2017 & rated 91 points: In some ways their base zin, in certain years it shines. (1088 views)
Tasted by btock on 4/1/2017 & rated 88 points: Drank pretty straight forward this go around. Still tight maybe. Not giving up much on the nose, though bottle had been transported and then chilled in the fridge so I wasn't very kind to it. User error :) Grill wine. Can hold longer. (1346 views)

2012 Turley Zinfandel Juvenile

2012 Turley “Juvenile” Zinfandel, California.
Though the vast majority of our wines are single vineyard designates, Juvenile is actually composed of a variety of young vines that have been replanted in several of our old vine sites. We tag the vine when we replant it so as not to mix the brand new vine with its much older neighbors, then pick these young vines separately and make a distinct wine. The vines that make up Juvenile range in age from about 6-25 years, and we pull from 18 of our best vineyards across California, including Hayne, Ueberroth, Pesenti, Salvador, Vineyard 101, Fredericks, and Kirschenmann. The 2012 is exemplary, exhibiting the fantastic year across the board: open and expressive, juicy red and blue fruits, and succulent spices like white pepper, proving itself once again as a classic California Zinfandel.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
