Community Tasting Notes (average 90.3 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 28 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by SLOFred on 2/25/2022 & rated 91 points: I was pretty leary about this wine, given its age. But after a 3 hour decant, it was really nice. Even the non-reserve is a good value. (436 views)
Tasted by SLOFred on 8/29/2021 & rated 85 points: Not flawed, but undrinkable. Tannins and no fruit. (482 views)
Tasted by FLXHoneymoon on 2/16/2020: Easily the most interesting wine we've had in a month or more. Depth and structure with nice intensity. Good balance. I would say a wine of terroir, whatever that is. Could go awhile yet. (1095 views)
Tasted by bigbass250 on 4/21/2019: bringing to my sons for Easter as I read it goes well with the porketta we're having, as it turns out we didn't drink it so saving for next time (1205 views)
Tasted by SLOFred on 3/5/2019 & rated 92 points: Not a Taurasi, but I think it is just as good. This producer's regular Aglianico at $20 is a great wine. This is a notch above. Definitely you need a 1-2 hour decant, even with 12 years on this wine. (1219 views)
Tasted by Mattshank on 3/4/2019 & rated 92 points: 2 hour slow ox. Nose: Wonderful violets and assorted florals, mint, Indian spices with earth underneath. Palate: Very soft styled at almost 12 years old with black fruits, assorted spices and earth. Just fantastic and my best bottle of the 3 (last bottle). If you have some enjoy it now with some air as it is rocking now but no need to decant. A slow ox is just fine. Now 92 points. Always love it when my last bottle is the best (that's the objective). A steal at only $23/bottle. (1130 views)
Tasted by SLOFred on 9/6/2018 & rated 90 points: A real "powdery" texture. Cocoa flavors. Best consumed with a meal. (1216 views)
Tasted by Mattshank on 8/24/2018 & rated 90 points: Very similar to last notes on 11/2/17 but a bit more integrated. No decant this time. Just a 30 minute slow ox. (766 views)
Tasted by WilliamMP on 6/26/2018 & rated 89 points: Wonderful aglianico, a grape of so many styles, with a good few years on it. Bin end for sub £20, so not complaining, but didn't quite meet expectations.

N: Enticing, worn out toasted sweet oak, milk choc, lots of ripe red berries still, worn leather, garrigue herbs, Balsamic.

P: M+ body, acid and tannins frame nicely. Aged wood notes dominate, milk choc, old leather, tobacco leaf. Dried raspberries/plums with cream. Maybe better in youth.

F: tapers off very quickly, letting the side down. (825 views)
Tasted by Sniffy-Sniff on 4/17/2018 & rated 91 points: Really tight on day-1, singing on day-2, fell off a cliff on day-3. Fantastic food wine. Drink now with brief decant. (966 views)
Tasted by SLOFred on 4/16/2018 & rated 93 points: Shockingly good bottle of wine. 3 hour decant. The complexity of this wine was off the charts. The flavors just kept coming and coming. Initially it seemed like a complex PN, but with time it just got richer. A fabulous wine. (877 views)
Tasted by sjw_11 on 4/9/2018 & rated 87 points: Still good colour, clear and deep. This has a quite secondary nose now- cedar, undergrowth, boot leather. There is some red fruit or plum type notes there as well. On opening a hint of charcuterie or blood that fades to the more savoury characters with air. The palate doesn’t quite fulfil the promise of the nose- it just feels a tad disjointed. That said, it’s pretty drinkable. Some bright red fruit, firm line of acid. If I had one more I’d give it five years. If I had six, I would probably start drinking up. (727 views)
Tasted by brasstab on 12/22/2017 flawed bottle: Corked. (916 views)
Tasted by Winedog1 on 11/22/2017 & rated 91 points: This smelled like Bordeaux: wet soil, mushrooms, and plum. There was bricking in the glass. However, it tasted nothing like Bordeaux. It was rich and tannic. Sharp and strong. Coffee. (936 views)
Tasted by Mattshank on 11/2/2017 & rated 90 points: 2 hour decant (mag decanter). Nose: Very earthy and dark fruited. Palate: Blackberries, plums, and scorched earth. Medium length finish with still very solid tannins. Even at 10 years of age give this monster lots of air, and as another reviewer noted, pair it with food. Nice Aglianico. (957 views)
Tasted by finlero on 9/28/2017 & rated 88 points: Good aglianico needs breathing room, this started to get good around the 3-hour mark. For better or worse, some bitterness and brackish minerality steers this out of crowd pleaser territory, but it's a structured old world "real" wine at a good price. 10 years in, all clear vibrant youth in color. Nose of plum, cedar, leather, spice, vanilla. Very good elements on the palate that don't quite fully integrate, red fruit up front rushing into herbacious raw black fruit midpalate, some wildflower floating around too, and said minerality, but each element seems a little isolated. Notably long finish, tannins are pretty coarse and rustic. I personally enjoyed this quite a bit, but it'll be worse than lost on anyone looking for a more modern style. Absolutely screams for food pairing, this would be incredible with a duck ragu. (1065 views)
Tasted by Lesvignobles on 2/3/2017 & rated 92 points: The wine in the glass is an opaque, almost black red. The nose however is not as brooding, with sweet, brambly berry, hot stone, and a lifted dark floral note. The wine wears its alcohol well, giving richness instead of heat, with currant, baking spice, mandarin and chocolate. Ripe, raisined fruit transforming into apple peel makes for a lasting, delicious finish structured by smooth tannin. For a wine that has a reputation for firm power, I was surprised by how approachable it was on the palate. But make no mistake, this wine has the stuffing to stand up to heavier meat and mushroom based dishes. A hearty winter stew or a roast of lamb with garlic potatoes would pair fantastically. To go with a traditional Basilicata specialty, I would do ciammotta, a dish of eggplant, peppers, and potatoes in a tomato sauce. (485 views)
Tasted by navybrat on 4/15/2015 & rated 90 points: Really quite good. Shades of chianti. Tight on opening. Excellent second night. One hour to air. (2909 views)

Aglianico

Varietal character (Appellation America)

The Southern Italy Outpost (on the CellartTracker Forum)

Originally from Greece and an early Roman favorite, Aglianico was planted as early as the seventh century B.C. Infused with interesting aromas of plums, raisins and licorice. Dried floral notes flow easily into the medium to full-bodied palate of black pepper, smooth, subtle cherry, and plum flavors.. A stylish, intriguing young red, with fine tannins and a ripe balanced finish.
