Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.7 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 32 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by bugdoced on 7/5/2019 & rated 91 points: rounding into shape with long length and still with a nice integrated structure
note to self: no cdp if not at least 10-15 yrs old (1369 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 2/3/2019: Still surprisingly tight and muted, needed an hour of air to come out. And still this is not super expressive the way Mont Olivet with age can be. The fruit is light red with notes of white pepper, elegance and finesse here. But no olives, herbs, oomph. I would give this a few more years. (1499 views)
Tasted by Escher Cellars on 10/15/2016 & rated 93 points: Was leery about expectations but what a wonderful CdP, just the right balance of earth and cherries, bold on the front yet smooth on the finish with a slight plum aftertaste. Wish I had more bottles. Drink now or before ~ 2018. Cheers. (2655 views)
Tasted by Ary on 12/23/2015 & rated 92 points: Relatively light colour with brick on the rim. Traditional Pape in the nose; wet earth, smoked bacon, dark-red fruits, licorice, dried figs and some lemon zest as well as dried orange to complete. Medium bodied on the (traditional Pape) palate with red fruit, earth and dried orange notes. Enough fruits and body for another 2 years; drink before 2018. (3099 views)
Tasted by beatles on 12/20/2013 & rated 89 points: Good, not great. Tight, typical - of the vintage, of the domaine. Lots of olives, herbs dominates, lacks generosity. Better with food, but I still feel I should have drunk this earlier ... while still very well balanced, it is close to actually drying out in the aftertaste. (4137 views)
Tasted by Bistrobro1 on 12/19/2012: very, very good....rich and flavorful but not overripe or overbearing. an older and to my mind better style of cdp. (3836 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 11/9/2012: Odd showing last night. I poured this into a decanter resulting in the wine shutting down completely for close to an hour. When it came back up to the surface it showed the rather typical black olive notes for Mont Olivet but with distinct green, herbal marks the came and went. Somewhat thin and diluted and not close to previous experiences with this wine. (3818 views)
Tasted by Champagneinhand on 1/14/2012: Peking Duck House off-line

This was a different bird compared to the other CdP's tonight. Dark fruit, kirsch, Asian spice but a very funky barnyard smell that actually carried over into the palate. Fairly tannic, but this was from a magnum so its aging process has been slowed. The acid was a little lower than expected, but it worked out well in the glass. Nice long finish of firm tannin and sour fruit. This was the punch in the face wine of the night, but completely enjoyable with the spiced Chinese dishes and Duck. Thanks Cliff. (2190 views)
Tasted by bacchus on 1/14/2012 & rated 89 points: Central New Jersey Off-Line CT tasting at Peking Duckhouse, New York City (Peking Duckhouse, New York City): This was the first of two mags brought to central jersey CT off line at Peking Duckhouse, NYC. We braved the first real chill of winter to attend this event. This bottle had depressed foil and slight label stain. However, cork was at appropriate depth and there were no active signs of seepage. On first pour, there was no sign of oxidation. Color was still vibrant. Yet, the wine seemed tired and/or closed. After being open for awhile, some fruitvstarted to emerge, but nothing of great interest or complexity. The wine did offer some game meat flavors that went well with the cuisine. The leftover wine came home and was poured off to a 750. Served the next night with duck pate. Although slightly oxidized, the wine had actually improved, with more generous fruit showing. In, retrospect, a short decant might have helped get the kinks out. (3616 views)
Tasted by bacchus on 1/14/2012 & rated 90 points: Central New Jersey Off-Line CT tasting at Peking Duckhouse, New York City (Peking Duckhouse, New York City): This was the second of two mags brought to a CT off line at Peking Duckhouse, NYC. This was, by far, the more interesting of the two bottles. This bottle offered more generous fruit in a style typical of CdP. No indication of spoilage or oxidation. Still within optimal drinking window. This bottle deserves the comment that a reputable producer can do wonderful things in a less than stellar vintage. The leftover wine was brought home and poured off to a 750. Served the next night with duck pate. The wine held up well, with only minor deterioration. This was an interesting experience to see what a lighter style CdP has to offer. I am glad to have found this bottle on the dusty shelf of a local retailer who had no idea what it was and was glad to get rid of it at the release price. (4059 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 12/13/2011: Compared to the 1998, this is more structured, in better balance and fresher. Still very rich on up-front, fine cherry fruit and spices this is in a good spot now. There is an elegant and refined feel to this wine, something I didn't find in the 1998. Brought to Lusardis for birthday celebration dinner for Aleksander. (1568 views)
Tasted by saturnaisland on 1/9/2011 & rated 92 points: Medium bodied. Well integrated. Smooth and mellow. Dark plum and dried cherry fruit with Mediterranean spice and slight hints of leather and mincemeat. Was still great the second day. Nice wine. (2104 views)
Tasted by no leashes on 9/12/2010 & rated 89 points: I think RP had this one right on -- flavors of mincemeat, dried Provencal herbs, pepper, and sweet cherry fruit. Thinning out a bit, but still very enjoyable. From .375. Paired with homemade Indian cuisine, tasty combination. (2319 views)
Tasted by dfeiner on 7/30/2009 & rated 90 points: Didn't critically appraise this. Had with dinner and it was very enjoyable. Started off a bit thin then opened up and had garrigue and licorice flavors. Did we become more accustomed to it or did it change in the glass? Not sure but it was a wonderful dinner wine. (2866 views)
(2864 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 4/18/2009: I usually give Mont Olivet 10 years to come around and the 1999 Chateauneuf du Pape is indeed coming around. Dark purple red color. Quite big concentration for sure. This is a bigger and more substantial wine than the 1998. Nose of leather, animal fur, dried black cherries. Black olives and licorice on the palate. Maybe a bit of balsam wood as well. Very long finish. This is a great Mont Olivet. Is drinking well now and will continue to do so another 10 years. (2909 views)
Tasted by David J Cooper on 11/9/2008: Medium red. Very nice nose. Lots of cherry, meat and a little black pepper. Not too rich but very nice flavours. Totally resolved tannins. Hard to go back to after the Leonetti. (2850 views)
Tasted by richard.stevens on 9/27/2008 flawed bottle: Tasted and smelt of vinegar and cider (2919 views)
Tasted by David J Cooper on 5/25/2008: Deep red. Barolo like? Floral notes, raspberries and leather. Quite rich. Tannins are pretty much on the way out. Very good right now. (2979 views)
Tasted by Cahill on 4/13/2008 & rated 89 points: Nose of herbs, olives and plums. Significant acid streak that mellowed over time, plum, raspberry and tapenade on the palate. Tannins were hidden behind that acid at first, but as the balance resolved, some sweet tannins filled in the finish and enhanced the raspberry flavors. The herbs and acid make it a food wine for me. (3093 views)
Tasted by Mr T on 4/5/2008: this was a bad bottle that appeared to have been cooked/denatured rather than corked (3126 views)
Tasted by BailliSacks on 4/3/2008 & rated 88 points: Nose tight and flinty. Palate, a bit flinty, dry, with dark wood resin tobacco flavor running to back of tongue. Very little fruit, just a touch of swampy sweetness on finish. Mature. Slight turned wood pulp wet paper bag note, comes out more and more with airtime. (3140 views)
Tasted by peebal on 11/3/2007 & rated 90 points: I got an incredible deal on a bunch of this stuff and have been drinking it with immense pleasure as I wait for my "serious" CNP to come around. I actually think that I will get more from this than many of the wines I'm waiting for. This is a middle-weight with a wonderful streak of acidity running down the middle that makes it fantastic food wine. It is losing its fruit now and I don't intend to hang on to this for more than a year or two more. Serious nose of garrigue, plums, very little funk thankfully, some bramble. A nice raspberry and strawberry granache mid-palate finishing with herbs and nice ripe acidity. The mid-palate is fading fast but still very nice to open for those friends who aren't wine geeks but deserve something a little out of the ordinary. You know what I'm talking about. (3380 views)
Tasted by tanglenet on 5/28/2007: Pulled from KN's basement. A port like nose, lightweight on the palate with a somewhat short dry finish. Would have gone well with a hearty stew. Fair. (3477 views)
Tasted by Mr T on 2/5/2007 & rated 88 points: Not giving much tonight. No sweetness left in grenache, at least to my taste (3579 views)

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
