Community Tasting Notes (average 89.3 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 30 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by nigelb on 6/10/2020 & rated 87 points: The weight of this wine is evidenced by the way, upon entering the mouth, it forces itself to the front of the mouth. it leaves the back of the mouth unaffected. it's all about tannin I guess. There is no "coating" going on however. Some length but this is dominated by the alcohol on the tongue. Should have drunk this a few years ago; drying out now. Pleasant but lean and angular. (811 views)
Tasted by nigelb on 11/9/2019 & rated 88 points: Too dense for me. Lacks elegance. Fruit disappears on finish. Not my style. Should have drunk it when younger? (937 views)
Tasted by oropeza on 1/7/2019: Black fruit in front of earth, black pepper, some leather notes and lots of savory... beef, bacon. A little chew and some sour fruit towards the end. Really like where this is. (1115 views)
Tasted by Al Doughty on 12/14/2014 & rated 93 points: Plummy fruit, with a subtle hint of exotic spice and sage on the nose. Medium bodied with soft and somewhat delicate saline blackcurrant fruit backed with mushroom and a distinct gravelly minerality that lingers on a surprisingly long finish. A perfect accompaniment to roast lamb shoulder. (2083 views)
Tasted by nigelb on 4/22/2014 & rated 90 points: Very deep, ripe rich red, still bright and youthful. Expressive nose of blackcurrants and blackberries. Full bodied. Rich, ripe fruit to the fore and continuing to dominae through to a very respectable length of finish. Deserves a score or 90+ but it is not my style - too heavyweight. See how it ages. (2102 views)
Tasted by hawkeye54 on 8/27/2012 & rated 89 points: Rich and delicious. (2624 views)
Tasted by Biggsy on 2/26/2012 & rated 88 points: Dense ruby red. The aromas are quite restrained with some black fruits and peppery spice notes. More savoury than the 08, lacking a little of the plump fruit but still very enjoyable. Fresh and clean with good minerality, notes of charcoal and tobacco with fine cleansing tannins. Enjoyable. (2633 views)
Tasted by richard.stevens on 11/3/2011 & rated 89 points: Still good, but a little more drying on the finish than previous bottles (2859 views)
Tasted by richard.stevens on 5/17/2011 & rated 90 points: Dark fruit, freshly ground black pepper. Very much like a good syrah from the Northern Rhone. Excellent (2331 views)
Tasted by richard.stevens on 12/6/2010 & rated 91 points: Really excellent - like a Northern Rhone syrah rather than a new world shiraz. Black pepper, spice, dark fruit. Great length (2460 views)
Tasted by MRichman on 7/13/2010: Hey that's pretty nice. Smoky, juicy fruit. Smooth. Enjoyable. (2211 views)
Tasted by DaddyNeedsPow on 5/7/2010 & rated 91 points: Needs time. Right now a tight, impeccably structured, tannic, smokey, chewy, dark fruit and leather experience. (2632 views)
Tasted by newworldman on 2/26/2010 & rated 90 points: smokey leather pepper. was great with flat iron steak. (2448 views)
Tasted by Wino from Michigan on 9/14/2009 & rated 88 points: Nice and easy drinking -- it has soft ripe fruit with hints of vanilla and spice. It is a good $20 syrah but not worth much more. (2741 views)
Tasted by poptart_nyc on 8/18/2009 & rated 89 points: very rich, but enough spice notes and acidity to keep it interesting. A good cali syrah. (2755 views)
Tasted by beezer6 on 7/29/2009 & rated 88 points: Taste from Whole Foods (Lincoln Park) wine dispenser.
Smokey nose sporting lots of black pepper. Nice meaty play with blackberries and some charred leather on the back end.
Little austere on the finish showing more heat than I'd like from this vineyard and winery. Not bad at all, though, overall. (2707 views)
Tasted by rxlaw95 on 7/1/2009 & rated 90 points: This wine deserves at least a 90. Agree with the Alcohol hot taste, but it doesn't distract from the fruit. Oak is present. For price point this is a value play. (2781 views)
Tasted by PIntag on 5/30/2009 & rated 88 points: Santa Barbara Tasting at The Wine Country in Long Beach, CA (5/30/2009)

On the nose, dark fruit and a touch of alcohol. On the palate, a bit of sweet dark fruit with some fine tannins and a little heat on the finish. Very enjoyable Syrah. (2819 views)
Tasted by whynblog on 4/21/2009 & rated 85 points: Typical deep purple Syrah color. The nose give earthy notes of white pepper and leather with a hint of wild-berry. Although alcohol levels are not excessive this wine seems hot and overpowers the fruit mid-palate. Spice dominates the finish with anise hanging in there the longest. The tannins are big and bold all the way through. Good but not great. (2891 views)
Tasted by cmr on 4/10/2009 & rated 90 points: Very nice full body with pepper and dark fruits that are very nicely balanced with the tannins. (2906 views)
Tasted by CentralCoastTravels on 4/4/2009 & rated 91 points: This is a big Syrah. Initial strong pepper on the palate gives way to berries, cherries and complexity. There's a lot going on in this wine. Paired very well with mushroom filled ravioli and tomato basil sauce. Excellent quality and one of our favorites! Thank you Mr. Lindquist! (3197 views)
Tasted by KeithAkers on 10/20/2008 & rated 90 points: connoisseur wines new world and new additions fall portfolio (Vivere, Chicago IL): nose: really good peppery nose with black cherries, spice tones, and dark floral tones surrounding the pepper

taste: excellent full body with lots of pepper, anise, black cherries, and dark floral tones

overall: an excellent syrah with a really good full body feel to it. Chewy tannins give the basis of the wine providing a pepper based attack and black fruited finish (4031 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Bien Nacido Vineyard (wikipedia)

From Testarossa Winerey - Club Testarossa May 2013 notes:

Bien Nacido Vineyard, Santa Maria Valley

Testarossa has a long relationship with Santa Barbara County's famed Bien Nacido Vineyard. Rob and Diana have been purchasing Chardonnay from Bien Nacido since 1995. Bien Nacido is located in the cool climate Santa Maria Valley appellation, about an hour north of Santa Barbara.

Here, the close proximity to the Pacific Ocean creates a true region I climate - very cool, gentle conditions throughout the crucial summer and fall ripening seasons. An ideal situation for top-flight Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The vineyard traces its roots back to the year 1837 when a Spanish land grant of some two square leagues was made to Tomas Olivera by the then Governor of Alta California. In 1969, the Millers, a fifth generation California farming family, purchased the property. They also purchased an adjacent parcel which had been part of the original 1837 Spanish land grant and reunited the two as Rancho Tepusquet, now comprising over two thousand acres. The original adobe remains as one of the few privately maintained adobes in California. In the early 1970's, it became clear to the Millers that the soils and climate were ideal for growing grapes, and they moved quickly to realize the winegrowing potential of the estate. Today, Bien Nacido is one of Calilfornia's most recognized vineyard names.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
