Tasted by Laura Gurski on 12/25/2023: Delicious (471 views)
Tasted by mfimiani47 on 2/11/2023 & rated 92 points: Showing really well. Nice amount of fruit with some decent acidity. Don’t see a reason to hold this much longer. Should drink well over next 5 years. (1550 views)
Tasted by SCosgrove on 7/3/2022 & rated 92 points: Excellent (2182 views)
Tasted by JLPwine on 2/8/2022 & rated 91 points: Beautiful to drink now (2772 views)
Tasted by CJet on 4/3/2021 & rated 85 points: Gross. Generic. Everything else you’d expect. (4018 views)
Tasted by Fatkidfromfl on 2/23/2021 & rated 91 points: Ive consumed a 4-pack over the course of the past 4 years (about 1 per year). This was the first time that I actually enjoyed it. Secondaries are coming online nicely. Tannins are starting to back away from center stage. Not my style of wine. Not acidic enough. Very tannic and oak/fruit driven. Nothing restrained about this (except for the acidity!). Sweet. Tastes like fresh pressed fruit syrup stored in oak for an extended period of time. Paired well with ribeye. Pairing was questionable with country sausage and fried eggs.

I received this as a gift.I would not spend retail on this wine, but for my price it was excellent. If someone brings this to you as a gift, graciously except. If you are thinking of buying this for yourself.... you do you. (3628 views)
Tasted by VinoDiver on 1/3/2021 & rated 91 points: A consistent producer whose bottles from one year to the next are always a crowd pleaser. (3145 views)
Tasted by battytaxicab on 11/28/2020 & rated 90 points: Elegant, restrained and well worth the wait. (2627 views)
Tasted by VinoViking on 11/22/2020 & rated 94 points: Again - this is an outstanding wine with qualities that drive a strong QPR. Drank with some more notable (and expensive) Napa Cabs, and this stood right up. Dark, dry with complex fruit and earth. Drinking very nicely now. (2334 views)
Tasted by Wloka on 9/30/2020: Gifted (1801 views)
Tasted by ppandian on 8/30/2020 & rated 89 points: Tannic, extracted, notes of raspberry and some menthol. Not great balance or nuance. (1756 views)
Tasted by WineKnut on 12/25/2019 & rated 92 points: No detailed notes written, but attention was paid while we enjoyed our holiday meal last night. On opening the nose was lovely and could be easily sensed while decanting. The color was dark bing cherry skin red and very clear and pretty in the glass. Immediate taste on opening was somewhat candied and reductive and my first instinct was to pull another bottle just in case.

I went about my business preparing the holiday meal of 130 degree sous vide New York strip with rosemary zinfandel reduction, twice baked potatoes stuffed with sauteed onion and garlic and roasted red chili flake Brussels sprouts for the next 2-1/2 hours.

Once at the table, this CS was free from the opening night jitters and came to life as it took the stage with it's supporting cast of characters. The crimson actor was so comfortable playing in it's role, acting and reacting naturally to all of the other flavors. After the last act, the red fruits, oak, dust, smooth but firm tannins and lingering after taste all earned their way into the hearts of the audience.

Much derision has been leveled against this style. Some have called it simple, or foursquare and so be it. It's modern and clearly Napa. With the full benefit of hindsight I'm glad that I resisted the urge to pull another bottle, because this wine was damn good with food. (3267 views)
Tasted by ieatprawnsss on 11/8/2019 & rated 90 points: Drank over 2 evenings. Dark purple in the glass, clear rim with plenty of legs. Black cherries, plum, hint of cassis, some leather. Started with notes of dry fruits and raisins but that cleared after an hour. Well structured, fruit forward and jammy, some acidity. Most elements in check but hot on the finish. Quite a typical cakebread cab. Quite well made, not my favourite style. (2988 views)
Tasted by dcalljr on 9/17/2019 & rated 90 points: Great (3153 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 2/14/2019 & rated 89 points: During a Calif CabSav tasting. Tannic, extracted, lots of new oak, toast, sweet and a bit foresquare. Not so much my style, score higher if it is yours. (4506 views)
Tasted by Duderino on 1/2/2019 & rated 91 points: Nice wine, but not worth the price. (3667 views)
Tasted by Pantera on 12/28/2018 & rated 91 points: Flavors were a bit muted. Still had great aromatics. Was drier than expected for a California Cabernet. Krissy liked it. Probably not worth the $65 price tag. (2628 views)
Tasted by VinoViking on 12/1/2018 & rated 94 points: Throw down vs. Chappellet. Dense fruit flavors. More balanced. Bigger and better body. Smooth and luscious. Didn’t need the steak to stand out. Overall winner - best vs. better. All good. Drinking well now. (2576 views)
Tasted by Mdubnik on 11/23/2018 & rated 91 points: needs to sit. a little "plain" to me. (2390 views)
Tasted by Loriblum3 on 11/10/2018: Great (1786 views)
Tasted by JKIndy on 11/8/2018 & rated 87 points: Muted nose, alcohol dominates. Not much roundness and short finish. Fell well short of expectations. (1294 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 6/27/2018 & rated 91 points: Rich, dark fruit, spicey. Oak is in check here but lots of heat at the finish. A bit too ripe for my taste. (3330 views)
Tasted by Skibank114 on 6/15/2018 & rated 91 points: Very nice. I wondered if it was too soon, but it is approachable at this point. The nose tells you right away this is going to be nice. Just the right level of fruit for our taste, and the finish is full and complete. Was better as the night went on, so maybe a decant which we skipped. I think it will age well for another 8 - 10 years, but no need to wait. It will grow some - maybe 92\93. Cheers! (2511 views)
Tasted by Farnelicous on 6/2/2018 & rated 90 points: Very good cab. Opened to compare to 1995 cab. Decanted for ~2 hours; still very big tannins. Very good fruit. Comparison to 1995 Cakebread cab says hold this another ~15-25 years... (2481 views)
Tasted by Franssen Wino's on 5/16/2018 & rated 98 points: On patio (2556 views)

Cakebread Cellars

Producer website
Over 30 years ago, Jack Cakebread came to photograph the Napa Valley for a book and while there, he casually mentioned his interest in one day owning a vineyard to some family friends who had a ranch in Rutherford. When he returned home that afternoon, the phone rang and it was the family friends offering to sell their property. He headed back up to the valley that same afternoon to make his best offer, and Cakebread Cellars was born. As the Cakebread family reflects upon the many profound changes in the wine industry over the last 33 years, such as innovative farming techniques and new methods of reaching out to consumers, they note that their key values have remained the same. Dedication to making the highest quality wines and a commitment to family has followed a continuum as their first small vineyard has grown into a thriving internationally distributed wine company.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
