Tasted by Guido L. on 12/12/2023 & rated 94 points: Great Paulliac-like Bordeaux. Red and dark berries. Still some tannins left, but very well integrated. Long finish. 5-10 years of life ahead. 94-95 (217 views)
Tasted by europat55 on 3/13/2021 & rated 93 points: 1996 Tasting (Andre and Sabine's House, Mountain View, CA): Nose: 93 Palate: 92
My #3, Group's #1 (46 pts). Tasted blind. (1645 views)
Tasted by alerg on 12/22/2018 & rated 94 points: Decanted and allowed to open for about 2 hours.
The wine looks crimson colored. The legs are slow. There is light sediment in the bottle. It smells like fig. The body is medium/full. The wine has smooth texture. The wine finishes long. The wine has low acidity. (2033 views)
Tasted by rjayson on 1/8/2018: Bottle was flawed. Shows past due. Have 1 more bottle. We'll see. (2683 views)
Tasted by WestUAg on 11/15/2017 & rated 92 points: Took an hour or so to knock the dust off, musty to start and then revealed some secondary flavors..still has some fruit left but god some tobacco and forest floor. pretty nice old wine but if you have this you should drink up soon...not going to make it much farther. (2924 views)
Tasted by Timikeb81 on 8/23/2015 & rated 93 points: My last bottle. Cork dissolved but still a lovely, background tannins and luscious. The group drank it quickly. (4605 views)
Tasted by beaunehead on 10/3/2014 & rated 94 points: Very deep purple color with a narrow brick rim fading to clear. Aromas of dusty blackberry and graphite with hints of powdered spice lead into a soft, elegant palate, silky smooth with mild, slightly herbaceous tannins and a long gravelly finish. Excellent to drink over the next few years. (5102 views)
Tasted by wondersofwine on 8/16/2014 & rated 91 points: Took to Mo'Cool picnic August 16. Tasted mature with some tobacco, autumn leaves, and dark currants. May have been a bit too mature for my taste but I know some Bordeaux drinkers prefer the more mature wines. Went quickly once opened so I didn't give it a second try. (3942 views)
Tasted by ageverett on 2/16/2013 & rated 93 points: This was a real treat with steaks and a red wine mushroom reduction. Cork was dry and crumbled, but fill was good and wine was in lovely shape after a 4 hour decant. Tannins were completely integrated. Not a ton of depth on the nose, but the taste had many layers. I would drink this up in the very near future. (5256 views)
Tasted by gmat5497 on 11/17/2012 & rated 93 points: Best of night. Verymature (5101 views)
Tasted by mygrogro on 4/8/2012 & rated 93 points: great nose with perfect balance of crisp fruit raisin and jelly
great finish (3932 views)
Tasted by 1961Vintage on 4/1/2012 & rated 90 points: Still a wonderful, deep, rich wine..not likely going anywhere from here except down...would drink up quickly.. (3324 views)
Tasted by mygrogro on 12/24/2011 & rated 91 points: silk, bordeaux like, medium body, well balanced,
nice finish, will keep for a few more years (3364 views)
Tasted by WineHawkeye on 12/17/2011 & rated 92 points: Time to drink up; not quite as tremendous as my earlier notes. (2355 views)
Tasted by WineHawkeye on 8/2/2011 & rated 95 points: Consistant with my note of 5/29/11 except with perhaps slightly less charcoal than I described in that note. Just as rounded, integrated and complex as ever. Still a blockbuster. (2495 views)
Tasted by WineHawkeye on 5/29/2011 & rated 97 points: Fantastic in every way. Bordeaux characteristics throughout. Charcoal and tobacco on the nose with a deep purple nearing black color in the decanter and glass. A rush of rich layered flavors with fully integrated tannins that lingered beautifully on the back of the pallet for upwards of a minute. Can't imagine it improving but no fear of a bit more cellar time either. 96-98pts. (2552 views)
Tasted by TheEngineer on 1/1/2011 & rated 95 points: 1996 Cain Five. Lovely wine. At its absolute peak and will need consuming, Lovely density of fruit, almost bordeaux like, with some tea and slight mushroomy hints but great balance overall. Vied for WOTN against on 02 Haut Brion. (3008 views)
Tasted by TheEngineer on 3/21/2010 & rated 95 points: This wine out bordeauxs most bordeauxs. Great balance,d solid elegant nose, tobacco, ripe fruits, great development. At the top of its game! (3739 views)
Tasted by TheEngineer on 3/21/2010 & rated 95 points: same notes as before (3817 views)
Tasted by TheEngineer on 3/21/2010 & rated 95 points: 1996 Cain Five, Amazing, Wine of the Night. Good density of fruit but balanced with amazing structure, great nose, out bordeauxs most bordeaux. (2975 views)
Tasted by dbg on 12/10/2009: Dark red, nice nose of cassis, tobacco, medium-full body, nice balance, ripe fruits, smooth finish, fully integrated and mature, excellent. (3516 views)
Tasted by PDavisMarble on 6/23/2009 & rated 94 points: Tannins have mostly mellowed and become round. A long finish with many layers. Wood, leather, dark and black fruits, and some cherry. Delicious (3893 views)
Tasted by Falco203 on 1/7/2009 & rated 93 points: Do you remember in the movie Sideways while standing in her kitchen Paul Giamotti asks Virginia Madsen, "so what was the bottle that did it to you." she responded with her bottle story that made her fall in love with wine. Well, for me, it was a Cain Five. A 1995 Cain Five to be specific. 1995 drank better than the 1996. I would rank the 1995 with a 95. It was the first time for me that a bottle made me pause and take notice.

Each year is different of course but the 1996 is concentrated, ripe, soft, and rich. Aromas of truffles, cigar leaf, black currant in much of the traditional bordeaux style. Because of exceptional maturity, the wine has always been luscious and soft. Now, with substantial bottle age, it seems to be ready to drink – and, with all of its stuffing, it should hold for several years still.” (4230 views)
Tasted by gmat5497 on 10/19/2007 & rated 93 points: Brought to tasting. Was rated top wine by some. Very balanced and fruit forward. Great with food. (4222 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
