Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.5 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 15 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by bweber79 on 11/27/2021 & rated 90 points: Medium ruby apprarance; medium intensity of aromas of raspberry, red cherry, red plum, strong reductive flint, sage, thyme, cinnamon, clove, cedar, and potting soil. Dry and medium acid; medium minus body with medium alcohol; medium finish. Good wine with nice age and a solid raspberry/cherry palate; reductive approach is only on the nose. (612 views)
Tasted by studleytrey on 8/16/2021 & rated 91 points: 1st of 3 for me and this was certainly a surprise. I tend to like the Aussies with some age on them but given some recent notes here, I figured I'd check in on one. While it's still got a youthful constitution, I don't see this as an ager, but the surprising thing was how restrained it is. Blind I would have guessed this as Cotes-du-Rhone or a Beaujolais, maybe a pinot or Spanish garnacha, but definitely not a Barossa grenache! Interesting.

Ruby to garnet color with transparency. Aromas of graphite, wet stone, ash, floral, and red fruit. Light to medium body, medium acid and finish, with flavors of cherry, strawberry, lemon, orange peel, and light spice. Very feminine (am I not supposed to say that anymore?) and restrained. Food versatile—this is a red to go with chicken or the right type of fish preparation (tomatoes). I like it. Don't think it needs to age, so I'll probably rip through my others. 90-91 (739 views)
Tasted by TannicBeast on 1/31/2021 & rated 90 points: Very old vine grenache. Med garnet, showing a little age. Med (+) aromas of ripe maraschino cherry, wild raspberry jam, plum sauce, smoke, sweet baking spices. Judicious oak. Dry, but fruit forward, with med acidity, med, resolved tannins and high alcohol (14% but perceived as a bit lower). Med (+) body, flavor intensity and length, with a very pleasant slightly balsamic, sweet and sour finish. Very good by itself but very versatile with food. Age-worthy, but not likely to improve with further aging. (841 views)
Tasted by rhg on 12/24/2020 & rated 90 points: Chocolate, blackberry, forest floor. Leather. Overripe red cherry. A bit in your face. But good. (807 views)
Tasted by Richard123 on 9/15/2020 & rated 91 points: Powerful pop of grenache / fruit flavor, thoroughly enjoyed it. QPR good too, but definitely an Aussie "in your face" style. (843 views)
Tasted by snarfglk on 10/15/2019 & rated 90 points: good lively grenache; evens out with air (591 views)
Tasted by snarfglk on 10/6/2019 & rated 90 points: Better day 3, hence the higher score. (463 views)
Tasted by Teawine on 5/29/2019: Warm, deep and rich, but not in an Aussie fruit-bomb kinda way. Dark cherry, leather and elegant tertiary spice flavour that doesn't seem oaky. Chewy tannins. Delish. (515 views)
Tasted by jkscully on 4/22/2019: This seemed very good for the price. Stawberry at first, but then mostly dark cherry, wet stones, candied fruit, licorice, with a cayenne spice on the finish. With the candy flavors, this reminded me of a New World Pinot Noir. (516 views)
Tasted by snarfglk on 12/28/2018 & rated 89 points: As others noted, a bit closed for day 1. Opened up day 2 (much better than day 1) but still not exuberant. Maybe a slightly off bottle. (561 views)
Tasted by Stevecci on 1/22/2018 & rated 92 points: Fairly closed straight out of the bottle. After an hour in the glass it improved dramatically and kept getting better with time. Delicious wine. Can drink this all day. (788 views)
Tasted by Stevecci on 1/14/2018 & rated 90 points: Needs an hour or two for the flavors to reveal itself. Better than expected. Can drink this all day. (701 views)
Tasted by Jeremy Holmes on 5/25/2016: Off an 80 year old vineyard at 400+ meters above sea level. This is a beautiful, highly perfumed Grenache. The aroma is bright and spicy with notes of sandalwood, red berries, cherries and licorice. It is silky in the mouth, building through the palate to finish savoury and dry. Quite possibly the best value red wine in Australia. (1341 views)
Tasted by Avid Wino on 5/8/2016 & rated 91 points: Raspberry, musk, rose petals, spice. Refreshing acidity, spiky grainy tannin. Score is for now. I reckon this'll be better in a year or few. (878 views)

Cirillo Grenache The Vincent

The Cirillo Vincent Grenache is year after year one of the country's best value Grenache.

Marco Cirillo's family lays claim to the world's oldest Grenache vines, the most ancient of them dating back to 1850. The Vincent is the baby of the bunch made from a blend of 80, 90 and 100-year-old vine material.

Vincent is a charismatic character, just like his maker. It bucks the trend of big, sweet, oaky Barossa Grenache and sits firmly in the bright, cheery and gluggable camp. A portion of whole bunches give it a lifted perfume and silky texture, while the use of older French oak and stainless steel ensure this is a lot brighter and bouncier than many of its Barossa counterparts.
