| Community Tasting Notes (average 93.5 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 82 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by Yack Man on 1/15/2024 & rated 94 points: One of my favorite wines from the 2014 vintage. The color is more dark reddish purple color with a lively aromatic nose. On the palate, a little repressed until it gets some air. After a short decant this wine is open for business in a very good way. I side with James Suckling in his assessment of this delightful nectar: Lovely balance and rich but not overly so. There's firm and silky tannins and a fresh and continuous backbone. Medium to full body dominated by black cherry and dark berry fruits and some oak and spice. 94+/ 95 solid points. (786 views) | | Tasted by Yack Man on 9/5/2022 & rated 93 points: Excellent wine that is starting to show slightly acidic and not as energetic. It's still a very good wine, but it's 8 years old and from my experience that seem to be the tendency with so many of these Cali Cabs. (1726 views) | | Tasted by Yack Man on 2/27/2022 & rated 95 points: I love this wine, it shows much better than many of it's 2014 peers, just a solid value. I'm down to my last few bottles wine and I wish I had more. This is great as a pop and pour but give it some air for a fantastic experience. 94+/ 95 Points. 🍇🍷😋 (2035 views) | | Tasted by EMTAME on 12/11/2021 & rated 92 points: Not much to add to the most recent notes. This is in a great spot for current drinking and is unlikely to get better. Drink up and enjoy! (1551 views) | | Tasted by LCHammer on 7/10/2021 & rated 95 points: Opened at Region in Barrington. Flash decant yielded a tart front palate, mediocre middle, and decent finish. The wine was clearly not ready at that point but after an hour the front end fruit came around nicely, mid got better, and the finish went on forever. Wine clearly needed the decant and time. Recommend holding for 3-5 years or allow time for at least 2 hr decant. (1801 views) | | Tasted by TastesGoodToMe on 6/30/2021 & rated 93 points: Drinking great right now. Sadly, my last from this vintage (2328 views) | | Tasted by Montesquieu on 5/23/2021 & rated 92 points: The obvious choice on my daughter Scarlett's 10th birthday. Sixth and final time I've enjoyed this wine. Big, jammy Napa cab that I suspect is best in its youth. (1301 views) | | Tasted by Badmonkey on 1/11/2021 & rated 94 points: A nice showing for this wine. Dark ruby fruit - blackberry, currants, and dark cherry. Smooth mid-palate with solid depth/concentration - medium plus body. Nice rich flavors of dark berries, some spice/licorice, and a little chocolate/cocoa. Fairly long finish. Popped/poured but drank out of a decanter for a couple hours. Not much improvement with time but at a nice drinking point. Drank next to a 2015 Hall Jack’s Masterpiece cab and I would give a slight edge to the Jack’s but the Scarlett really held its own which was nice to see at around half the price. Again, a nice vintage of this wine - in my opinion in line with the 94 rating from Parker. 100% cab. (3016 views) | | Tasted by Mr T on 1/6/2021: Big thick cab Not especially subtle or elegant but delivers a lot of ripe full bodied cab (1239 views) | | Tasted by Yack Man on 12/25/2020 & rated 94 points: Popped, poured and great out of the bottle. This is an excellent wine that satisfies my flavor profile, it consistently delivers (for taste and flavor details, see previous notes). The only advice that I would offer for this wine would be to give it some air for a better experience. (1749 views) | | Tasted by Yack Man on 11/4/2020 & rated 94 points: Delicious (1856 views) | | Tasted by TastesGoodToMe on 10/28/2020 & rated 93 points: 93+ It has been a few years since I have had this wine and it certainly has improved. Cherry and dark berry notes. Fruit and tannin balance in a really good place right now. (1814 views) | | Tasted by Yack Man on 10/16/2020 & rated 95 points: This continues to show nicely, very enjoyable. Nice deep purple reddish color and fragrance. Dark cherry and dark berry fruits, crème de cassis, and a hint of oak. Full-bodied, nice fruit extraction, bold, and quite solid. I like this wine. This bottle showed better that my last one. 94+ points. Yeah, call it a fruit bomb, but I like this wine. (1805 views) | | Tasted by Odedis.Wine.reviews on 10/2/2020 & rated 94 points: Dark ruby in color with a short purple rim.
Strong nose of blackberries, sweet cherries, figs, raisins, vanilla, cedar, licorice, cola, mocha, pencil lead, alcohol, peppercorn, leather and tobacco.
Full bodied, big, bold, rich and elegant, with medium acidity and long legs.
Dry and extremely fruity on the palate with blackberries, figs, cooked cherries, black licorice, cedar, vanilla, leather, spices, chocolates, tobacco, mocha, coke, peppercorn, pencil lead and dark coffee.
Long finish with round tannins, tangy cherries and spices.
This is a delicious Cabernet Sauvignon from a great vintage in Napa. Rich, powerful and tasty.
Still young, but already very yummy, and will age nicely in the next 5 to 10 years. Will probably be a 96+ point wine in 5 years.
This 6 year old is good right out of the bottle, but better as it opens up. I let it open up for 90 minutes, but I'm sure another couple of hours would have been a better choice.
Good by itself as a sipping wine. I paired it with a charcuterie board of meats and cheeses.
14.9% alcohol by volume.
94 points.
$70.(current vintage) (1205 views) | | Tasted by flwinos on 9/19/2020 & rated 93 points: Popped and let breathe for about 2 hours. Did not taste initially, but after two hours of slow ox, this was drinking great. Certainly lower tannin on this wine, but I don't see it falling off a cliff anytime soon. However, it may not get any better IMO. No detailed notes taken on the flavor profile. (1235 views) | | Tasted by Grapetimescomin on 8/22/2020 & rated 91 points: Interesting cab. The tannins are completely gone and all I tasted was very smooth jam. If tasting blind I would have absolutely thought this was a zin and not a cab. If you are into big fruity cabs then this is for you. For me it lacked other flavors I was looking for and actually think the lack of tannins at this point makes the fruit stand out too much. (1192 views) | | Tasted by LCHammer on 6/22/2020 & rated 95 points: In a perfect place right now. Fruit is perfect and tannins are just grippy enough. May get better but I'm not going to wait long on my next bottle. Perfect F-day with Flannery strip steaks. (1357 views) | | Tasted by swade on 6/4/2020 & rated 94 points: Holding this in front of me was like carrying a torch. Wow! Effusive aromas of forrest berries and spices. Silky red berry palate. Amazing. 94 (1280 views) | | Tasted by Yack Man on 2/19/2020 & rated 93 points: My last few bottles of this vintage were really good, absolutely delicious. With this bottle, the wine has backed off from where it was. Although very good, the energy and depth that I’ve come to enjoy in this vintage is not showing like before. Six years from bottling, perhaps there could be a bottle variation with this one? Even at this point, this Cab is a whole lot better than most in its class. 92-93 Points. (2195 views) | | Tasted by ledocq on 12/7/2019 flawed bottle: Alas, a crazily vivid amount of brett. So frustrating, but you could tell there was an excellent wine in here. That said, I opened a second bottle, which was also...off. "Off" how? Great question. It wasn't corked, and it wasn't cooked, and yet it just didn't taste like any version of Scarlett I've had. I love this wine, and have been drinking it since the 2009 vintage happily, but thist was weird in a way I couldn't identify. So I bought to to my lws to have them taste it. They'd never heard of the producer, so they came to it fresh. They didn't think anything was flawed in the wine, but thought it might be bottle variation akin to that made by natural producers. "It's not one of those full bodied Cal cabs," he said, which means it doesn't taste like Scarlett. I tried it again and i'd just say the nose is fine, but the taste is shrill and acidic. Might be okay for some folks, but made me sad. (1985 views) | | Tasted by Yack Man on 11/4/2019 & rated 95 points: This wine is first rate, an absolutely superb wine for the price point! See previous notes. (2243 views) | | Tasted by RayT on 10/31/2019 & rated 92 points: Purple in color. Cherry, blueberry, and gravel on the finish. A bit of alcohol on the nose but not on the palette. This had a long finish. Again I am a bit of an outlier. I like this wine but don't love it. It is improving with age. (1863 views) | | Tasted by Yack Man on 5/19/2019 & rated 95 points: The is a great wine. Brooding, deep purple beet / garnet reddish color and good nose. On the palate, dark berry fruit, dark cherry, dark currants. crème de cassis, cedarwood and oak essence. Full-bodied and well as elegant, a solid Cab that is showing very well at this stage. I wish I would have loaded up the truck on this wine, I only have 4 bottles remaining. Yummy! 94+ points. (2582 views) | | Tasted by Mapleglo330 on 4/27/2019 & rated 91 points: Much flavor here. Vanilla, wood, forest, but not a ton of fruit like I expected. A good wine. (1954 views) | | Tasted by csimm on 1/25/2019 & rated 94 points: Black cherry, red and black currant, dusty leather, earth, and some ginger snap cookie spices. Notable verve and energy here. The dust note is interwoven throughout the profile, adding some peripheral nuances to the black/red berry core. Finishes a little powdery on the tail end, but the fruit manages to rush back in and coat the palate, elongating the stretch of flavors.
Served next a 2013 Kobalt, which was much more of a chewy chocolate and brooding dark earth driven wine than the racy Scarlett. Drink the Scarlett now or hold with confidence for another 3-5+ years. | Scarlett Wines Producer websiteCabernet SauvignonCabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.
Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet SauvignonUSAAmerican wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.California2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson Napa Valley Napa Valley Wineries and Wine (Napa Valley Vintners)Rutherford Rutherford,
