Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 1 note) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Eric gene Noack on 7/10/2018 & rated 89 points: This tastes more like an Oaked Chardonnay

I should know by now that a Sauvignon Blanc from the Adelaide Hills is not going to be the same as a NZ Sav. Blanc.
Yet here I m again with this one.
I just find the Adelaide Hills variety and perhaps even the Australian rendition so different to what I really like in a Sav Blanc.
Well, maybe the WA variety is more like what i like.
To be honest this could almost pass for a Chardonnay.
To me it lacks fruit.
The nose is somewhat smokey oak/slight bleach/chlorinated water/musty smell.
Fruit is lacking and there are overtones of the oak.
The finish is clean and no bad after taste.
I was very critical years ago when Australian wine makers began oaking Chardonnay.
It was mishandled badly and it felt like chewing on a piece of western red cedar.
Thirty years on I have been vindicated, and I remember at the time I had a word with the manager of the Carlton Rex in Sydney telling him he should get that rubbish off his wine list and the bathroom needed re grouting.
Not sure if he listened about the wine but they did re grout all the bathrooms after I complained and they sent me a bottle of champagne with a thank you note.
If you like your whites light in flavour, clean and dry and with oak you will like this.
I note it has won a number of gold medals.......but I always have a laugh when I see a Gold medal awarded for drinking with food.
My God !!! if it can't stand on its on two feet without some food flavours floating around in your mouth then I would say it has no legs at all.
This type of award should be ridden out of town with a shotgun or hung high. (530 views)

Sidewood Estate

Producer website

The Sidewood Vineyard is situated at the 300 acre Ashwood Estate in the cool-climate of the Adelaide Hills wine region, 380m above sea level. Climate, soil, careful pruning techniques and hand-picking play a vital role to ensure that only the best fruit is produced for Sidewood Wines. With the rows of vineyards planted facing East - West, this ensures that combined with intensive canopy management the intensity of the fruit flavour profile will be enhanced.
