Tasted by Collector1855 on 3/30/2024 & rated 95 points: Wow, this is a very precise and grassy Puligny. Expressive nose of fennel, lime, deliated palate. A purist Chardonnay. Long, aromatic finish. 95+ (338 views)
Tasted by vvWine.ch on 3/1/2024 & rated 94 points: Kräftiges Gelb. Fast schon Chablis-like dieser Puligny. (253 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 11/4/2023 & rated 95 points: During the La Paulée in Zurich, so no detailed tasting notes. Excellent flinty notes, complex, fresh. (700 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 5/1/2022: Expressive nose of citrus, green apples, chalk. Pure and expressive on the palate as well, elegant, medium-bodied. Pronounced citrus and stone marks, no hints of oak. Tastes like Chablis with a bit more weight. Great wine, more to come but delicious now. (694 views)
Tasted by Nicephoras on 12/5/2020: What. The. F? This was double blind, and I think this was an off bottle. Volatile acid, strange herbal nose and sweetness on the finish - this is Carillon? I had this ranked last and most people were convinced this wasn't Burgundy - guesses ranged from northern Italian (?) to Alsatian (???). I did call in Burgundy, but I'm chalking this up to an off bottle. (1359 views)
Tasted by Nicephoras on 6/26/2020: 2001 (and circa) Burgundy (Jason's Roof): One of mine, so not blind to me. This is a slightly bigger wine than usual for Carillon's Referts, and has a touch of bitterness on the finish. However, the palate is as linear and direct as you'd expect and there's no reduction or oak here - when the heaviness comes through, it's from the weight of the wine, not the winemaking. Most guesses were for Chassagne, which in some ways show that even in a tough vintage like 16, Carillon holds up. I think this needs more time unlike the 15s, though it's unlikely to ever be a great wine like the 14s or 17s. (1365 views)
Tasted by BradE on 10/20/2019: Beautiful nose, and solid on the palate. The kind of wine that’s not the ”best” wine, but the wine you want to be drinking at today’s lunch. (1506 views)
Tasted by Jeremy Holmes on 7/12/2019: A lovely nose of smoky mineral reduction, pure white peach and aniseed spice. It is full in the mouth with good density and definition. It possesses a line of grapefruit acidity and finishes with a flinty feel. Length is very good. (1323 views)
Tasted by tinybubbles on 2/19/2019 & rated 93 points: Good focus to this wine. Citrus trending towards grapefruit. Nice tension and energy on the finish. Even better out of bottle than it was out of barrel. Well done for the vintage. 93+ (1228 views)
Tasted by Jeremy Holmes on 1/8/2018: This wine is extremely focused and direct. It is bound up by its grapefruit acidity. There’s citrus and white peach a plenty and so much mineral. It should unfurl into something spectacular. (1226 views)

The Chardonnay Grape

Les Referts

On weinlagen-info

Les Referts is a Premier Cru vineyard in the famed Puligny-Montrachet appellation of Burgundy's Cote de Nuits sub-region. Like most of the village, Les Referts is planted to Chardonnay, although this vineyard's position at the base of the hill gives a slightly richer, generally less floral wine than is usually associated with Puligny-Montrachet wines.

The 5.5 hectare (13 acre) site lies north of Puligny town, on the commune boundary with Meursault. Meursault's Charmes vineyard is just across the road.

In Puligny-Montrachet commune itself, Les Referts sits below the Les Combettes vineyard to the west with Les Perrières running along the slope to the southwest. The vineyards below, to the east of Les Referts, are only classified for use in village-level wines.

Les Referts' position at the base of the slope means that while the soil is still calcareous, it is deeper and slightly richer here. This clayey marl has a higher proportion of iron, betrayed by its red color, and the wines are more muscular and heavier than most Puligny-Montrachet as a result.

The vineyard has a gentle slope, facing southeast and giving the vines plenty of exposure to the morning and early afternoon sun. However, Les Referts is less exposed to cooler influences than in the vineyards at slightly higher elevations, and so there is sometimes a tendency for the grapes to overripen and lose acidity.

Les Referts Premier Cru wines are often compared to Meursault wines rather than Puligny as they are more closely aligned with the signature style of that commune.

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
