Community Tasting Notes (average 89.6 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 5 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by markcic on 11/25/2023 & rated 90 points: After our sushi guests left, I reopened this bottle while watching TV. I had previously opened it in the afternoon when some friends stopped by. The nose is fruit with hints of chocolate. The palate is dark berries, cherry, fig and some chocolate. The finish was moderate in length. (225 views)
Tasted by jayhawkdds on 7/8/2023 & rated 90 points: Good Merlot. Tannins are definitely present. Wine is a little disjointed at the moment. I’d wait another several years before I’d open another bottle. (193 views)
Tasted by Starnes on 5/14/2022 & rated 93 points: A mild smooth merlot. Great with dinner or after dinner (447 views)
Tasted by rkww on 7/14/2021 & rated 87 points: Upon initial decant, the 2016 Stags' Leap Merlot Block 20 offered red cherry, blackcurrant, plum, and plenty of spice. Halfway through the first glass, it tightened, and my palate was overwhelmed by an astringency that told me tannins were present, even if they didn't really provide all that much structure. Each sip from then on finished with alcoholic burn and a bitter lemon peel aftertaste. Clearly this needs more time to come together, but I'm not really convinced that it has the substance to justify the wait (or the price tag). Drink from 2023-2028. (983 views)

Merlot

Merlot is a dark blue–colored wine grape variety, that is used as both a blending grape and for varietal wines. The name Merlot is thought to be a diminutive of merle, the French name for the blackbird, probably a reference to the color of the grape. Its softness and "fleshiness", combined with its earlier ripening, makes Merlot a popular grape for blending with the sterner, later-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon, which tends to be higher in tannin.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
