Community Tasting Notes (average 86.5 pts. and median of 87 pts. in 60 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by RussK on 9/28/2023 & rated 90 points: Nice, but this bottle had a tiny bit of TCH. Still enjoyed. (634 views)
Tasted by Daryll on 9/18/2023 & rated 86 points: Decent wine - lots of tannins. Slightly harsh at first pour. Overall good value for the price. (585 views)
Tasted by EXPLORER 825 on 10/15/2022 & rated 89 points: A blend of Merlot, Cab Sauvignon and Malbec. Deep red garnet in color. Aromas while decanting of dark cherries and raspberries with touch of tobacco and leather. On the palate, acceptable red fruit flavor but slightly acidic. While not a bad wine, I had greater expectations …. Maybe a slightly tainted bottle. (1512 views)
Tasted by Les Kangas on 9/7/2022: I opened 1/2 hour before tasting and it was about an 89 or 90 when I did taste. Within ten minutes, it wasn’t good and got worse. Do not air and take the air out with a sucker type device. Reidel Bordeaux/Cab glass. (1635 views)
Tasted by Michael Hung on 4/6/2022 & rated 83 points: A: deep ruby
N: med intensity, simple, earthy, flint, wet stone, bramble
P: med- intensity, clove, oak notes, watered down plum, gravel, wet stone. med+ acid, high alcohol, med+ tannin, med+ body, short finish.

Unbalanced with the acidity on the weak fruit notes, lacking any real body or backbone. Agree with most of the other reviews. Although it is cheap for $7, not really worth the effort of buying and drinking. 83- pt (1844 views)
Tasted by robertp57 on 4/6/2022 & rated 83 points: 14.5 ABV. Moderate tannins. I can imagine some strawberry but cloves and something vaguely like shoe polish was more prominent. It did soften up after about 30 minutes in the glass. I was hoping to enjoy this but didn't. (2162 views)
Tasted by rmmacchia on 4/1/2022: Meh. Wouldn’t buy. Not really anything appealing about drinking it. (1746 views)
Tasted by Stuart10er on 2/2/2022 & rated 86 points: Purple colored and earthy mushroom nose. Taste has good acid and tannins have a dusty long finish. Other odd tastes that seem oak related but solid enough wine but for $22 I was hoping to get a better integrated wine. (1436 views)
Tasted by Motz on 12/21/2021 & rated 86 points: This went down smooth enough. Not a whole lot to it, but at the price point, nothing to complain about. (2861 views)
Tasted by Barry'sFault on 12/17/2021 & rated 88 points: Decent little bordeaux from Blaye. Very inexpensive and favorable to this reviewer over domestics at similar price points. Good hamburger wine. (1464 views)
Tasted by EMMVEGAS on 11/24/2021 & rated 87 points: For the price ($7 at Costco), I've really enjoyed this wine. I opened the first bottle, and then went back and purchased two more bottles! (1676 views)
Tasted by Livininparidise on 10/19/2021 & rated 78 points: Very strong graphite on nose and taste. I was hoping for more for a WS 91 pointer. Not sure who rates it. Maybe as one reviewer mentioned that it needs to age more.

I wanted to like this because to the WS review and price point,, but I don't. Another reviewer commented, $7 @ costco, don't need to say anything else. (2025 views)
Tasted by red freddy on 10/9/2021 flawed bottle: Impulse Purchase @ Costco
14.5% abv - $7

Spoiled. Cork smelled musty. Wine tasted 'off.' Dumped remainder of bottle.

Blend is 80% Merlot; 15 % Cabernet Sauvignon & 5% Malbec (nothing esoteric) from a small, but long-time producer with his own acreage (Merlot dominant Right Bank). The number of poor CT reviews leads me to think a batch of this may have been tainted and may help account for the discounted prices; wine has several positive reviews and was originally imported @ $30-40 range. It may be good IF you happen to get a good bottle. (1815 views)
Tasted by Bfinny00 on 9/13/2021: Nose dominated by liquid smoke/mesquite that I could not get past. (1732 views)
Tasted by Mauest on 9/10/2021 & rated 85 points: Good value but certainly no complexity, as one expects at this price point. Works as a modest dinner glass. (1643 views)
Tasted by Yonny on 9/9/2021 & rated 85 points: The wine I wanted to like. $7 bucks at Costco some initial good flavors that just seemed to get worse as I decanted, filtered, pumped down and left overnight. Saw NFURLONG’s rating on day two. Yeah pretty close. (1448 views)
Tasted by craigdlove on 9/2/2021 & rated 86 points: Seven bucks at Costco is all you need to know. (1274 views)
Tasted by ChateauShiny on 8/25/2021 & rated 87 points: Decanted 2 hours. Deep opaque purple. Nose is dusty, barnyard, dark plum, black cherry, graphite, and tar. Heavy bodied, medium-high acidity, well integrated tannins. Palate is earthy and has a very dark fruit profile of plums, currants, and blackberries. Finish is moderate granite and graphite filled with hints of herbs and black pepper.

For the $6-7 Costco Bordeaux price point, this one is one of the better ones we have bought. (1342 views)
Tasted by danaesomm on 6/5/2021 & rated 85 points: Medium ruby in the glass. This wine definitely needs some air, so don't be too quick to judge it! Zingy raspberry, ripe red plum, clove, and cocoa on the nose. More red and black fruit on the palate with attractive, fertile earthy notes, medium acidity, medium body, and well integrated tannins. (1480 views)
Tasted by ezecoli2001 on 5/12/2021 & rated 90 points: Great value Bordeaux. Big tannins. (1614 views)
Tasted by jmcmchi on 3/24/2021 & rated 86 points: Decanted two hours; could have done with more

Black fruit, tight tannins on back, a little earthy wood to finish

An honest petit chateau, solid value at $7 (1940 views)
Tasted by nfurlong on 3/20/2021 & rated 83 points: dark ruby color; mossy shale stone on the nose with a bit of mouldy black fruit; acids dominate a weak black raspberry spine. Unimpressed. Will pass on this one. (1787 views)
Tasted by stamperb on 3/9/2021 & rated 82 points: Nose: sweet and mild, raspberries, maybe hint of pepper/barrel spice. Uneventful overall. Palate: Tart, woody and tannic on first sip and overly sour/tart on the finish. However, with time/decant, it opened up and softened quite a bit. I would definitely decant this wine, and perhaps hold it a few years (I know, surprising for a $7 wine that already has a few years under its belt). In the end, I've purchased better cheap (<$10) Bordeaux at Costco that drinks well now, e.g. Bel Ormeau Bois Vert, Château Le Grand Moulin, etc (1848 views)
Tasted by Don Ledbetter on 2/26/2021 & rated 87 points: Dry. (1524 views)
Tasted by ElJefeTX on 2/18/2021 & rated 81 points: Some black fruit but heavy oak on the nose and palate. Drying tannins and high acidity make this nothing more than a Tombstone pizza wine. (1527 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux

This appellation has supplanted Premières Côtes de Blaye.

The original appellations associated with Blaye were Blaye, Premières Côtes de Blaye and Côtes de Blaye. Red and whites were allowed in all three. With the 2007 vintage, Blaye was designated solely for red wines and Côtes de Blaye for white. The appellation Premières Côtes de Blaye was eliminated and wines now use Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux. This for both reds and whites.

With respect to CellarTracker, this required some administrative decisions designed to prevent duplications. We have eliminated Premières Côtes de Blaye even for legacy wines. These wines are listed in CellarTracker with the Appellation they are using going forward.

Blaye & Bourg AÔCs: A collection of appellations with distinct personalities are located across the right bank and Entre-Deux-Mers. These terroirs are all set on hillsides and therefore have the advantage of superb sun exposure.
