Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 93.1 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 54 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Sperls on 9/18/2021 & rated 94 points: Amazing nose, smelled much younger than it was. Strawberry, menthol, herbs, a little tar, medium finish. Lots of life to it and was better and more expressive than the 1997 rocche dei Manzoni Barolo S. Stefano we had alongside and had expected to best it. (1594 views)
Tasted by Nothung on 5/6/2021 & rated 96 points: OMG! Does it get much better than this?!? Alas, my last bottle. Plenty of life left if you’re lucky enough to have some still in your cellar. (1754 views)
Tasted by peternelson on 12/1/2020 & rated 92 points: Truffles (or was that the truffles on the pizza??), underbrush, soft earth, lower tannins, youthful (boy was I off on this one. I'll blame it on the truffles). I guessed younger bordeaux super tuscan blend. I thought it was good, classic, well-structured (tannins probably did mellow outwith the age on this). Enjoyed this, not a super star. DD at Cotzen's. (2056 views)
Tasted by Kemo Sabe on 5/13/2019: From 1/2 bottle and showing its age and format a bit. At the open was almost rancid, turned. Did get a little better but never good. Probably an off bottle but from a 375ml it may be gone. One left to try.... (3051 views)
Tasted by Nothung on 12/24/2018 & rated 96 points: Opened about 7 hours before drinking, decanted 2 hours before. Spectacular! Everything a great Brunello should be. Drinking at its peak right now. (2955 views)
Tasted by nittanyjack on 11/15/2018: Fantastic bottle...lots of secondary characteristics on both the nose and palate. Still a good bit of fruit left. Everything an aged brunello should be. (2077 views)
Tasted by Kemo Sabe on 11/10/2018 & rated 93 points: Very nice tonight. Almost Barolo like with leather, saddle, soy, dark berries. Opened nicely over a few hours. From 1/2 bottle and still has plenty of life. Very elegant and refined. Great tonight. (2101 views)
Tasted by Nothung on 11/25/2017 & rated 94 points: Wonderfully complex and integrated. Opened about 7 hours before serving. Appears to be at peak maturity. (2742 views)
Tasted by Kemo Sabe on 11/20/2017 & rated 93 points: Consistent notes from the past - great wine even from a 375ml. Leather, ash, tobacco, black fruit, clove, faint cherries. Great wine. (2149 views)
Tasted by Kemo Sabe on 10/5/2017 & rated 93 points: Consistent notes. Good and well integrated from 1/2 bottle. Drinking well. (2330 views)
Tasted by Kemo Sabe on 8/8/2017 & rated 92 points: Consistent and good. Loads of leather, saddle, ash, black fruit and just a hint of some prunes. Some rim variation given the age and 375ml bottle. From this format drink now. Not getting better but still quite nice. (2386 views)
Tasted by Kemo Sabe on 7/26/2017 & rated 92 points: Similar to last bottle but just not quite the depth and complexity. These are from 1/2 bottles so there very well could be some ageing variation starting to occur with the smaller format. (2502 views)
Tasted by Kemo Sabe on 4/27/2017 & rated 94 points: Perfectly aged Brunello. From 375ml. The nose leaps out of the glass. Clove, some wood spices, ash, dark cherries. Good tannins still present here. I quite like this wine right now. Not showing any signs of age at the 20 yr mark even from a 1/2 bottle. (1893 views)
Tasted by Fftjr on 4/16/2017 & rated 92 points: Had odd nose when first poured which quickly disappeared. Balanced and delicious fruits. Probably near, if not a bit past prime. (1775 views)
Tasted by smphelps on 2/6/2017 & rated 91 points: Crimson rusty color, very smooth (1729 views)
Tasted by Kemo Sabe on 1/24/2017 & rated 94 points: From 1/2 bottle. 20 years in and this is doing great even from smaller format. Great Brunello. Color is bright and deep red, little to no rim variation. Zero sediment. Expressive nose of clove, dark fruits, dark berries - very nice. Good amount of tannins in here (still) telling me this is built for the long haul. Medium body and alcohol with wonderfully long finish that is nuanced and complex. This is really good juice. (1735 views)
Tasted by pavel_p on 1/20/2017 & rated 94 points: Wow - best showing to date. Pnp. Garnet with translucent rim. Very fragrant and aromatic nose with mint and plenty of herbs, similar on the palate which is fresh and clear again with lots of herbs, still fairly tannic upon opening with medium (+) tannins, wonderful long finish at the 1 min mark. Wonderful BdM and miles away from the first few bottles from the same batch 94-95. (2071 views)
Tasted by Rsblackley on 11/26/2016 & rated 93 points: What a fantastic wine. Fragrant nose, smooth finish. Tannins and fruit still prominent after all these years. (1447 views)
Tasted by AHVinoFile on 4/1/2016 & rated 94 points: [Dinner at Preserve Kitchen with Tomi & Mary Petr] Dark garnet, almost opaque with traces of amber. Ripe black cherry blackcurrant bouquet with hints of earth, dried flowers, blackberry, roast meat, leather, herbs, spices & much later, coffee, fig, raisin & date. Full, deep, intense, concentrated, lush, supple & smooth, black fruit flavors invigorated by much tangy acidity over a bed of mellow soft tannins & ripe velvety extracts with hints of mid palate fullness, richness & sweetness; exquisitely balanced & seamlessly integrated showing marvellous texture & delicate finesse. Long, sumptuous & slightly acidulous finish. (94.5). After two marginally disappointing bottles tasted in the last decade, this came as a pleasant surprise. (2147 views)
Tasted by NineteenEightyTwo on 12/28/2015 & rated 94 points: Translucent crimson color, showing mature glints of auburn. The nose has the immediate sweet aroma of ripe mulberries, accented by a subtle smell of burnt embers, roasted meat, potpourri, and final hint of baking spice. At first, the palate is quite subdued until the end, when it perks up with a bold burst of tart cranberry and woodsy flavors that fill the back of the mouth. With air, this wine regains its compsure and the palate focuses into a forceful, mineral-driven yet exuberant expression of Tuscan terroir. Finishing medium-long and surprisingly clean, this exudes class. Tip-top Brunello. Though Jancis Robinson describes this vintage as unusually luscious and insufficiently fresh, this wine displays the opposite in both respects. Enjoy now, or through the end of the decade. (2298 views)
Tasted by pavel_p on 7/26/2015 & rated 94 points: After 3 flawed bottles of the 95 Sugarille and 1 flawed bottle of the 97 Rennina, with much relief I finally got to enjoy a correct bottle of aged Gaja BdM.
Pulled cork - which was about half way soaked - 3 hours before dinner, and then poured the wine about one hour later into a decanter. At the same time tried a glass and the wine was showing great already, so no more need for extensive decant here. Garnet bricking at the rim. None of the feared oxidized or medicinal notes, instead earth, herbs and some floral notes on the nose, similar on the palate with the addition of red and dark dried fruit, fine but dusty tannins, long finish. Outstanding BdM. Drink now. 93-94 (3085 views)
Tasted by pavel_p on 7/12/2015 flawed bottle: My troubled track record with aged Gaja Brunellos is continuing. After three flawed bottle of the 1995 Sugarille (see earlier tasting notes) I opened this bottom neck fill 1997 Rennina full of hope, and poured into a decanter at home. Garnet with slight browning towards the transparent rim. However, the nose straight out of the decanter, showing a mix of chemical and medicinal notes, made me wonder whether to pour this straight into the drain and open another wine...
At a sip 30 min later, those notes had blown off but there was now a clear oxidative note on nose and palate that stayed with the wine for the entire evening. Otherwise the wine seemed to lack fruit initially with a rustic feel and drying, medium tannins. It took a good 2h in the decanter for this BdM to truly open up, with an impressive, crisp and precisely drawn palate of cherries and earth, and a medium (+) finish which would merit a score in 92-93 range - if it there was not this clearly oxidized element. So on to the next bottle, but I doubt I will be seeking out older BdM vintages of Gaja in the future... (2953 views)
Tasted by hman888 on 5/23/2015 & rated 95 points: We enjoyed this bottle in magnum format, along side a bottle of 2000 Fleur de Gay and a 1996 Pichon Baron. Decanted for three hours before dinner, and drank it over two hours. The nose was beautiful, a combination of blue and black fruit, chocolate, coffee. The palate brought sweet, multi layered fruit, a bit of earth, and great balance with acidity. Long finish, with sweet tannins that have aged gracefully over the years. This was the best wine of the evening, and it was not close. Big, bold, yet refined. For bottles stored properly, this wine is peaking now, and probably has 3-5 years left in it. Drink up.  Tasted by Sotto325 on 5/4/2015 & rated 92 points: (At Piora wine dinner ). A real treat to enjoy now in such a great vintage, especially now for magnums.

The Gaja breeding is unmistakeable, and this is a classic Sangiovese expression.lots of dark red/ purple, beautiful sheen, an earthy yet sophisticated nose with lots of Tuscan character, and a wild berry, meaty , sweet woody flavor that followed.

Oddly, the wine never fully expressed. Compared with a 1997 magnum of Barolo a year ago, this was far more reticent, at some times weaker in its expression of potential and not clearly destined for a lot more expression. But time will tell. (2197 views)

Sangiovese

SANGIOVESE: (Pronounced "sahn-joh-vhe-se").
Sangiovese - Italy's claim to fame, the pride of Tuscany. Traditionally made, the wines are full of cherry fruit, earth, and cedar. It produces Chianti (Classico), Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montepulciano, Montefalco Rosso, and many others. Sangiovese is also the backbone in many of the acclaimed, modern-styled "Super-Tuscans", where it is blended with Bordeaux varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc) and typically aged in French oak barrels, resulting a wine primed for the international market in the style of a typical California cabernet: oaky, high-alcohol, and a ripe, jammy, fruit-forward profile.[16]

Semi-classic grape grown in the Tuscany region of Italy. Used to produce the Chianti and other Tuscan red wines. Has many clonal versions, two of which seem to predominate. The Sangiovese Grosso clone Brunello variety is used for the dark red, traditionally powerful and slow-maturing "Brunello di Montalcino" wine. The other is the Sangiovese Piccolo, also known under the historical synonym name Sangioveto, used for standard Chianti Classico DOC wines. Old vine derived wine is often used in the better versions, needing several years ageing to reach peak. A third clone, Morellino, is used in a popular wine blend with the same name found in the southern part of the province. Recent efforts in California with clones of this variety are very promising, producing medium-bodied reds with rich cherry or plumlike flavors and aromas. Among the available clonal versions are R6 and R7, derived from the Montalcino region of Italy, having average productivity/ripening and producing small berries on medium size clusters. R10 and R24 are well-recommended. R23, listed as deriving from the Emilia-Romagna region, has good vigor with medium-small clusters with earlier ripening. R102 derives from the Montepulciano region and reported to have average vigor with moderate productivity that results in higher sugar levels and good acidity from medium-small berries on medium-small clusters. Has synonym name of Nielluccio where grown in Corsica.
