Community Tasting Notes (average 91.6 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 48 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by salil on 11/15/2023 & rated 93 points: I think I liked this a bit more a few years ago - this was still a very good showing, though perhaps a bit more advanced in its flavour development than I would have liked. Lots of smoky and savoury notes here, though the fruit seemed a bit lighter and less intense/electric than I remember a few years back. I'll have to check into my '07 Klaus soon. (381 views)
Tasted by vmad on 12/17/2022: Meget høy kvalitet. Kan lagres mye lenger. (473 views)
Tasted by olemski on 3/21/2021 & rated 93 points: The final bottle, unfortunately. While this bottle was more rough and ready, not to mention reticent, than my previous to last one. It took a while to unfold despite its age, but when it did it outshone the Grüner Veltliner from the same year, producer and vineyard. We were eight around the table, and the decanter with this wine was emptied while most other wines, including the Grüner, left something in their decanters. (959 views)
Tasted by AudunG on 3/20/2021 & rated 91 points: Rich and developed aromas with ripe citrus. After a while more floral and elegant riesling aromas. Full bodied and rich in the mouth. (902 views)
Tasted by jkoenen on 1/13/2021 & rated 95 points: Liquid gold. Nose shows a lot of floral notes: honeysuckle, hyacinth, orange blossom and bergamot. Dry honey, candied citrusfruit and tangerine. In the mouth it's full-bodied and mineral, contains a wonderful bitterness, deep and spicy acidity (like pickles?), orange liquour, apricotpreserve, wet wool, talcum and crushed rocks.
This is big, impressive lengthy and well-balanced.
Deeeeeelicious! (888 views)
Tasted by olemski on 12/29/2020 & rated 92 points: I judged a previous bottle of this lace-like and soft voiced. That was before I had a Mosbacher 2009 Freundstück. Compared to that, this wine is intense and fruity. Slightly marked by petroleum too, but not to any significant extent. Good wine, though. I guess context is all. (734 views)
Tasted by cct on 8/22/2020 flawed bottle: TCA, bummer (873 views)
Tasted by olemski on 7/20/2020 & rated 93 points: Excellent wine with rich fruit yet fine and lace-like structure and expression. It does not shout, but whispers its harmonies and wisdom. A wine to contemplate and cherish. (460 views)
Tasted by WineDoctors on 7/13/2020 & rated 93 points: Golden yellow, sturdyl egs. Color to rim. jasmine, pink grapefruit, kaffir lime leaves. Petrol very muted. Medium acid, full bodied. This beauty has aged well. With soba noodle salad. Great pairing on the weekday. (503 views)
Tasted by olemski on 6/6/2020 & rated 93 points: Excellent, and fully mature. Will probably last some years still, but this is fully rounded out: harmonious, deep and complex. (497 views)
Tasted by AudunG on 6/5/2020 & rated 89 points: Developed and rich Riesling aromas with citrus and exotic yellow fruits. Rich and broad shouldered in the mouth. Some tannin like bitterness in the finish. Not the most elegant riesling, but certainly big and monumental. I found this better three years ago. (451 views)
Tasted by salil on 5/3/2020 & rated 96 points: Another showstopper. STGT wine, and absolutely thrilling both with butter chicken and to sit and follow on its own after dinner. (1340 views)
Tasted by brooklynguy on 4/25/2020: Whoa! What Salil said. This is wonderful. Plenty of time left on it, was maybe even better on day two. (1187 views)
Tasted by salil on 11/4/2019 & rated 97 points: Blown away by the complexity and depth here and descriptors won't do it justice, so I'll just say this was epic. All grown up and jawdroppingly good. (1098 views)
Tasted by Derek Darth Taster on 9/16/2019 & rated 91 points: Casual evening at Maison Dakota. Poured into carafe and drank over 2.5 hours. Drank in Gabriel Standart.
Appearance is clear, medium intensity, gold colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas ofyellow chrysanthemum flowers, honey pineapples, ripe peaches, stony minerality, salty minerals. Developed.
On the palate, dry, rounded high acidity, medium+ alcohol (13.5%), full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of honey, pineapples, very ripe peaches, hot stones minerality. Long finish.
Very good quality. Big, ripe fruity Riesling with mineral support. Almost monolithic, a bit too big for real comfort, though the ripe fruit extract is impressive. I would say drink already, no need for further ageing.
Doesn't feel as balanced as the 2007 Klaus. (793 views)
Tasted by AudunG on 9/30/2017 & rated 92 points: Clean yellow fruit and mineral aromas. Full bodied and concentrated, with a bit sweet mouth feeling. But also well balanced. Delicious and impressive. (1214 views)
Tasted by vmad on 10/4/2015 & rated 91 points: Fløyelsmyk og elegant. God lengde. Ingen petroleum. Venter noen år til neste flaske. (1892 views)
Tasted by mdefreitas on 4/28/2014 & rated 94 points: A bit mute when first opened, not showing much aroma or palate, just a bit of chalky minerality. After some air, this unfolded and expressed lovely citrus fruit flavors, straw, pleasing citrus pith bitterness and palate staining weight. Deep and intense with excellent persistence. An intense mineral bath of a finish. Gorgeous showing, but this needs air. (2512 views)
Tasted by fournet on 3/29/2014 & rated 93 points: Typical Austrian Riesling nose. Lot of evolution in the glass, especially in first 15 minutes. Initially was a bit flat but seemed to come alive after a few minutes. Lot of acidity. Lime, citrus and a bit of saltiness. Long and classic finish. (2300 views)
Tasted by ktrh on 1/7/2013 & rated 90 points: Large and packed riesling. Ripe yet still drinkable. (2853 views)
Tasted by brooklynguy on 7/30/2012: this is not a showy wine. the thing that moves me about it is its pronounced sense of harmony. it sows classic Wachau Riesling aromas, flavors, and texture, and the fruit is beautiful. but it's the savory mineral undertones, the vibrant but gentle acidity, the perfect balance that gets me. Lovely. (4161 views)
Tasted by Bill Bucklew on 4/14/2012 & rated 93 points: Peach and nectarine with sweet orange notes on the nose. Rich palate with a bizarrely dry orange marmalade concentration. A mineral foundation integrated with riper fruits like pineapple, red apple and lemon zest. Big bodied and a long finish, this will get better with some more time. (2223 views)
Tasted by mjf@ulkner on 11/25/2011 & rated 92 points: Dry styled, but lots of opulent peaches in honey notes. I always find it remarkable how Austrian rieslings manage to pack so much ripe fruit into a wine that finishes bone dry on the palate (2046 views)
Tasted by mdefreitas on 10/25/2011 & rated 96 points: Wow! This wine just shimmered on the palate with bright lemon, pink grapefruit and blood orange notes. Toss in a truck load of minerals to balance out this deep, Deep, DEEP wine. Expands slowly on the palate and lingers with a delicious citric stoniness. Fantastic Riesling! (2336 views)
Tasted by mdefreitas on 10/18/2011 flawed bottle: Outrageously corked. (1921 views)

Smaragd

From what I understand, these wines (very ripe, dry, late-harvest, etc.) were going to be designated Honivogl (after a kind of bird found in or near the vineyards, meaning 'honey bird'. However, the Honivogl family was involved in the wine trade in Austria and objected that this would cause confusion and weakening of their trademark. Another creature was therefore selected (the green lizard called Smaragd) to be the mascot (sort of ) for this kind of wine in the Wachau.
