Community Tasting Notes (average 92.3 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 98 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by UPL on 4/9/2024 & rated 98 points: again what a terrific wine - very elegant - full bodied - the nose is incredible (139 views)
Tasted by llink on 12/5/2023 flawed bottle: Premoxed (451 views)
Tasted by paul195 on 11/4/2022 & rated 93 points: Paired with a 2007 Mugneret Gibourg Echezeaux. Decanted @ 4:00 this got darker in the decanter and made me quite nervous. A quick taste @ 5:00 allayed my fears. Odd color aside this was a delicious Mersault, good fruit, acidity, texture, balance and lingering finish. (902 views)
Tasted by paul195 on 9/17/2022 & rated 92 points: 2022 release from the domaine’s cellar… 1 of 2 decanted @ 5:00 served @ 7:00 alongside of a 2006 Raveneau Valmur. Nice gold color, hints of honey and stone fruit, hint of citrus and solid minerality. With more time in the glass this really opened showing quite well. Lovely texture, balance and finish, great contrast to the Valmur (976 views)
Tasted by ricardito on 8/21/2022 & rated 95 points: The vineyard surrounding the Lafon house and purchased on release! Light yellow colour with stone fruit nose and outrageous mid palate
complexity that easily makes this the best so-called Deuxiemes cru Meursault, if not the best village white burg on the planet. Lanolin nectarine pits on a long palate with subtle caramel notes on the finish, with a zip of acidity that makes this a white wonder that should be a case buy every year. Best now to 2032. (977 views)
Tasted by asparagus on 8/6/2022 & rated 93 points: Took hours to open, but when it did - it was glorious. Peaches, white flowers with the slightest touch of citrus. Really good acid married to good minerality. This was very young but oh so wonderful. Just a touch short on the finish - betraying its village origins. (1133 views)
Tasted by UPL on 8/4/2022 & rated 97 points: terrific wine, needs 1 hour - very elegant - full bodied (849 views)
Tasted by Furmint on 7/14/2022: Heavily premoxed. (603 views)
Tasted by schan109 on 4/30/2022 & rated 94 points: Similar note (574 views)
Tasted by schan109 on 11/6/2021 & rated 94 points: Bottle breathe for 1 hour, and another one hour of bottle breathe before serving. Honey and white flower with fully body texture. Some minerals and complexity. Medium to long finishing. Very nice to drink now (750 views)
Tasted by Jammy Wine on 8/8/2020 & rated 89 points: 06/07 Burgundy Blind Tasting – This 2007 Clos de la Barre is developing gorgeously for a village wine. Waxy yellow fruits, ripe lemons and buttery toast. The texture, salinity and oak toast reminds me of Chablis from Dauvissat, even so the Meursault creamy stone-y minerals are distinctive. Gentle yet delicate white peach and mineral finish. Meursault 2007? (89/100) (1962 views)
Tasted by ovenmitt on 7/14/2020 & rated 93 points: Outstanding! I was afraid this might be premoxed after reading others notes. Bottle was fresh and vibrant. Lemon, clover, stone/slate. Long finish. Supremely balanced. Lacks extra bit of depth to be exceptional. (1411 views)
Tasted by winelover1808 on 5/30/2020 & rated 93 points: popped three older Lafons (2005 and 2006) in a row - all corked/premoxed badly. with trepidation, i opened this and it was fine!
pretty gold color; nose was white stone fruit; this was lots of lemon and minerality; was just one level of extra fruit and intensity to be a top white; but it was still terrific and super enjoyable. the finish had good acidic cut; a bit pleasant bitterness and lots of minerality frame the acidic finish. happy to finally have an aged lafon that wasn't corked. (1395 views)
Tasted by SMagowan on 12/24/2019 & rated 95 points: My last bottle. This might have been the best yet if the case. Very greenish yellow in color. Decanted briefly before serving. Nose of daisies and buttercups gave way to a mouthful of surprising acidity and lemon zest with just a touch of salted caramel. It drank effortlessly. Delicious. (1551 views)
Tasted by MWiking on 12/3/2019 & rated 91 points: was alittle bit oxidated but expect that a really nice Meursault (1527 views)
Tasted by SMagowan on 11/28/2019 & rated 93 points: Much better than my last bottle. Greenish yellow in color, it looked like it be a syrupy mess. But it wasn’t. It had a nose of honeysuckle and daisies and on the tongue it just melted into pleasure. A delight. (1029 views)
Tasted by dmalcolm on 8/5/2019: More than a little advanced displaying burnt citrus, roasted nuts and caramel notes. (1202 views)
Tasted by UPL on 8/24/2018 & rated 97 points: wonderful Meursault - fantastic nose- exotic fruits (1768 views)
Tasted by carlwhat on 3/2/2018: this bottle was on a downward slope. a bit carmelized with exotic lychee note quality that i associate with an oxidized wine. 11 year old meursault, guess it was ok. (2241 views)
Tasted by Blake Brown on 1/16/2018: 2007 DOMAINE des COMTES LAFON CLOS de la BARRE MEURSAULT- one of my fav bottlings over many years from this producer, this bottle shined as bright as many before it; spicy, mineral infused lemon, lime, pear and white peach was carried in a distinct texture all the way to the back end for maximum tactile and taste sensory pleasure. (1391 views)
Tasted by PGIF on 12/29/2017 & rated 92 points: Wine like this renews my reverence for master winemakers. Perfect for what it is, a top flight village white burgundy. Impeccable balance of ripe fruit, acid, and tannin. No wood in evidence. Smooth texture, satisfying bright finish without bitterness. Pure pleasure. Don’t think it will improve with additional time but may hold at this plateau for 2-3 more years. (2205 views)
Tasted by Papies on 9/4/2017 & rated 93 points: A very solid performance here. We haven't had one for a year or so (last time it was a poor show) and this one was just singing. Still very fresh and showed no issued wit premox albeit as time went by there were a few notes pointing to that.
Very pure, less fatty meursault more of a puligny. definitely a lot better than a village wine :). Citrus, mineral, still a fair amount of the honey touch of the oak. We can go on here but really delicious. 93 and best attack sooner than later. (2647 views)
Tasted by SMagowan on 4/8/2017 & rated 94 points: Dinner party at home - April 8, 2017

The meal:
Antipasto
Osso Buco with polenta and broccoli rabe
Select Vermont cheeses
Pears poached in cassis accompanied with red wine sorbet

The wines:
N/V Nathalie Falmet Champagne Cuvee Le Val Cornet (deg. May 2014) - 91
2007 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault Clos de la Barre - 94
2006 Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Colonnello - 94
2006 Azienda Agricola Le Ragnaie Brunello di Montalcino - 92
2012 Booker Vineyard Grenache The Ripper - 94
2012 Torrin Akasha (Syrah) - 95

The Falmet was nicely balanced and very pleasurable to drink with antipasto dish. Tight bubbles, notes of citrus and toast. Drinking as good or better than previous bottles.

The 2007 Clos de la Barre was a perfect accompaniment to antipasto and also balanced well against the reds later in the evening. Lots of buttery notes and a smooth long finish. Continues to astound me.

The 2006 Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Colonnello is just beginning to emerge as a young maturing Barolo. The tannins are subsiding quite a bit and had a great balance of fruit, soil, fragrance and polish. It has structure to last for many years, and it would be good to wait another 5 - 10 years to try it again.

The 2006 Le Ragnaie was an excellent Brunello but suffered a bit in comparison to the Colonnello. Its tannins were more muted but it lacked a certain complexity that I was hoping for. It is still an excellent wine.

The 2012 Booker Grenache and 2012 Torrin Akasha (Syrah) made for interesting counter-points to each other and to the older Italian wines. The Booker exhibits lots of licorice and fruit and big chewy set of tannins that are quite integrated. The Torrin presented a complex palate of dark fruit, earth tones and soil. It had an exceptional finish and had us all talking and marveling over it. (2604 views)
Tasted by aajder on 3/16/2017 & rated 92 points: Nice color. The nose shows rich aromas of white flowers, peach, almond, orange blossom and minerals. This is medium bodied on the palate with excellent concentration and wonderful finesse. The long finish features a strong mineral element. (2534 views)
Tasted by ews3 on 3/10/2017 & rated 94 points: La Paulee de NY - Verticals Tasting (Rainbow Room - NYC): Tasted at large walkaround tasting. My favorite of the vertical, this had most of the things I enjoyed about the '09, but more cut. Still a ripe tropical fruit profile, with oak, but a really strong acidic verve here. (3106 views)

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio

Meursault

Located in Cote de Beaune, south of Volnay and north of Puligny Montrachet. Meursault ("Murr-so") has historically been Burgundy's center for white wine production. In fact, nearly all of the 2.5 million bottles produced from 440 ha (1,090 acres) are whites. The soil is a mixture of marl and chalk and is perfectly suited to the production of chardonnay. Meursault wines are known for aromas of hazelnuts, honey and vanilla for its aromas and creamy, almost olive oilllike texture. There are no grand crus in Meursault, though Les Perrières, Les Genevrières and Les Charmes produce remarkable wines. Further, some of the most well-known vineyards of Meursault such as Narvaux and Limozin are not premier cru but Villages-classified vineyards. Recent top vintages include 2008, 2007, 2005, 2002, 1999, 1996, 1993, 1990.

With 437ha. of vineyards dedicated to Villages wine or Premier Cru, Meursault has the largest area permitted to be planted in white wine in the Cote-d'Or. Furthermore, despite the fact that the village lacks even one grand cru, Meursault has historically been Burgundy's center for white wine production, in the past even more so than Puligny-Montrachet or Chassagne-Montrachet. While much of those two villages had in the past been planted to red grapes, Meursault has always been white wine territory. In fact, the modern day vineyard of Les Combettes in Puligny-Montrachet, which forms a continuous chain with the premier crus of Meursault, was once considered part of Meursault and not Puligny, where the many nearby vineyards produced red wine. There are several important factors that determine the reputation of Meursault. Primarily, the soil throughout most of Meursault is perfectly suited to the production of chardonnay; it is a mixture of marl and chalk, that when combined with a largely east or southeast exposure creates healthy grapes that are full of character. Another factor correlates to geology, though in a very different way. Meursault's high water table allows its residents to carve deep, cold cellars "perfect for the production of wine" into the chalky, stony soil. So, while large negociants from Beaune dominated the production and marketing of Burgundy throughout time, Meursault remained a wine of its own citizens. Contributing to this, since red wine has been more prized throughout time, these same negociants looked elsewhere for sources because the wine of Meursault has always been white.

What makes the wine so special? The most common descriptors attached to Meursault are hazelnuts, honey and vanilla for its aromas and creamy for its texture. However, this simplifies things quite a bit. In most cases, Meursault despite an almost olive-oil texture is countered by a precise mineral character, stoniness and a more refined overall palate than, for instance, Chassagne-Montrachet. It's the unique stony/mineral character that often gets lost when tasting Meursault, as many concentrate on the ripe, hedonistic primary flavors and aromas. It's the bipolarity of the wine, the interplay of both factors, that makes Meursault one of the most sought after white wines in the world. As mentioned above, there are no grand crus in Meursault, though many would argue that Perrieres, Genevrieres and Charmes can attain these lofty heights in the hands of the best producers. Further, some of the most well-known vineyards of Meursault such as Narvaux and Limozin are not premier cru but Villages-classified vineyards, though again, the best examples are clearly of higher quality. source: http://www.burgundywinecompany.com/wines/display.php?subregion=Meursault
