Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 88.6 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 38 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by drummer on 1/14/2023 & rated 92 points: I had put this aside some years ago thinking maybe use it for a party. It has unexpectedly matured and greatly improved. 60% cabernet franc, 28% syrah,12% merlot, it originally was quite stringent with notes of tar with not much fruit. It has balanced and integrated well with dark crushed fruit on the nose and palate. Corked and left on the counter was excellent 2 days later. (377 views)
Tasted by hollis.jay on 10/8/2017 & rated 87 points: Although well past its prime, it still held up nicely to a beef stew. Subtle dark fruits on the nose and a finish with an earthy, pipe smoke, this wine was wonderfully enjoyable. (1254 views)
Tasted by JSHinson on 3/29/2012 & rated 92 points: Stunning Ruby red, cherry and bell pepper notes, nose of licorice. Drinking so wonderfully wouldn't wait longer. (3796 views)
Tasted by chanote44 on 4/27/2011 & rated 88 points: Dark color. Strong fruity nose with a floral component. Slightly acidic dark berry flavor with firm tannins that could stand a little more bottle time. Overall a very nice wine for under $10. (4671 views)
Tasted by winegr on 4/27/2011 & rated 87 points: Nice wine. Comes across softer and riper at first than it did initially. That said, tones down with a bit of time with more dark, smoky, fruit and dark chocolate and hazelnut coming thru. Solid wine, but not getting better unless you just like softer. (4668 views)
Tasted by TBA on 4/3/2011 & rated 87 points: Nice wine, good to very good range for me. Not as complex and not as much cab franc character as I had hoped based on other notes. Balance wasn't quite right. Day 2 maybe a point better. (4553 views)
Tasted by Dave Canada on 3/20/2011 & rated 89 points: similar to last bottle (4228 views)
Tasted by winegr on 3/10/2011 & rated 88 points: Solid wine. Lots of ripe raspberry with som nice earthy notes to balance. Didn't seem quite as complex as age mellows it. (2343 views)
Tasted by Corgoson on 2/8/2011 & rated 89 points: Very fruity nose with blackberry and raspberry. Taste: Definitely would improve over with a few hours out of the bottle. Strong tannin and it is a medium-full body dry wine. Solid sweet creamy texture that hold the body of the wine well even with the strong tannin. A bit dusty and quite oaky. Some hint of air freshener. Overall dominated by black fruits and cherry. Very solid wine that would go well with meat. Lots of depth. Got clove and pencil shaving. (2523 views)
Tasted by Gwsmith65 on 1/20/2011 & rated 89 points: Great QPR for this $9.89 bottle (2654 views)
Tasted by jlmammen on 1/5/2011: good - tastes like dark chocolate, and berries. Full bodied. (1521 views)
Tasted by jeremy_ross on 12/30/2010 & rated 88 points: Dark ripe cherries, blackberry, tree sap, a little spice at first. This is a palate coater with tingly acid, ripe integrated tannins and and impressive length. Pretty amazing value. (2674 views)
Tasted by BillyT on 12/29/2010 & rated 90 points: Black purple with a light brick rim. Big bold legs. Nose of must like old books, camphor, menthol, mint, peppermint, rasberry, black fruit, beef, shoe leather, some alcohol. Full bodied mouth feel. Nice spice on the entry, with stronger spice and red fruit on the mid palate, strong spice finish with sweet cherry fruit. Somewhat dry with amazingly integrated tannins and acidity. EXCELLENT wine for the price. I really am impressed with this wine and maybe would have scored it higher with all that's going on but I can't believe the price point. A MUST TRY. Agree with winegr and vinoreviews especially the Rhone like comments in the presence of 60% Cab franc. I wonder where the fruit was sourced. In spite of the percentage of cab franc this wine is Syrah driven which gives it the Rhone reference. (2804 views)
Tasted by cartime on 12/15/2010 & rated 89 points: This was really tannic and somewhat closed on opening. Improved over the course of a couple hours, but really its best on day 2. Nose of black cherry, blackberry, coffee, metallic minerals, and cannabis. A little thin on the palate with ripe currant and blackberry fruit and earthy herbs. Medium acid. Short to medium finish. Firm, dusty tannins that are much softer the second day. Decent value. Good with eggplant parm. (2816 views)
Tasted by njmays on 11/9/2010 & rated 88 points: interesting cab franc blend. odd overripe raspberry and pencil lead nose, thinner than expected mouthfeel with plenty of depth of flavor. berry, bittersweet chocolate, touch of menthol. finish was brief, but pleasant. far less tannin than i expected in a cab franc. (3748 views)
Tasted by winegr on 11/9/2010 & rated 89 points: This bottle opened more quickly than the first. Excellent balance. Dry, but still plenty of fruit with an earthy bittersweet chocolate and nuttiness with a bit of chalkiness and leather. Quite complex for the pricepoint. Not the longest finish, but very good. 89-90, probably closer to 90 with air. (3000 views)
Tasted by Dave Canada on 11/7/2010 & rated 89 points: very pretty....great value (3153 views)
Tasted by Jeffroag on 10/25/2010 & rated 89 points: Read alot of the comments, nice nose, tight to begin, but like all have said, really needs to be decanted (3239 views)
Tasted by CCestaro on 10/7/2010 & rated 90 points: excellent price per drop...classic barnyard nose with wet leather and berry.......a solid wine.... (3317 views)
Tasted by Eric Guido on 6/24/2010 & rated 88 points: The nose showed rich raspberry jam, clove and chalky minerals. On the palate I found blackberry, violet candies, spice and vanilla with a smooth full body. Decent finish but a bit cloying as the acidity doesn't quite carry the concentration home. (3546 views)
Tasted by winegr on 6/17/2010 & rated 90 points: Very balanced and smooth. Better and fuller night 2. Schildknecht was right on with this one. Nice subtle complexity with fruit, nuts, earth, and other complexity. Great effort. Decant or hold. (3401 views)
Tasted by knurdami on 5/23/2010 & rated 90 points: Was not impressed with my first glass. Corked the bottle and went to bed. Decided to give it a go the next night and wow. It was great. The fruit was wonderfully balanced and didn’t disappoint in the middle. Should have read the other notes before I opened it… I will buy more and hold on to my other one for a few years. (3578 views)
Tasted by Sculacj on 3/10/2010 & rated 91 points: Great for the price. Needs to breath about 1 1/2 hours (3697 views)
Tasted by paulmase on 2/27/2010 & rated 90 points: Puydeval 08 vdp d'oc good qpr wine very rhone like despite 60% cab franc, blk cherry & earth on nose and palate 90 pts. (3660 views)
Tasted by Baylorwine on 1/18/2010 & rated 89 points: Night one: opened and it was tight and astringent. Tried to give air, but i wouldn't give. Drank with beef burgundy.
Night two: re-opened and drank beautifully, rich and almost rhone-like (even though it was CF based). If I had decanted the first night, it would have a highter score. (3966 views)

Vin de Pays d'Oc

There are three tiers of Vin de Pays: regional, departmental and local.

There are six regional Vin de Pays, which cover large areas of France. The most voluminous contributor to this category of wines is Vin de Pays d'Oc, from the Languedoc-Roussillon area in Mediterranean France.

Each regional Vin de Pays is divided into several departmental Vins de Pays, of which there are about 50. The names are derived from the French departments in question and the limits exactly the same than the department's borders. For example, Vin de Pays du Gard is one of the Vins de Pays produced within Vins de Pays d'Oc using grapes from the Gard department .

The local, or zone-defined Vin de pays are numerous, and may take its name from some historical or geographical phenomenon, such as Vin de Pays des Marches de Bretagne or Vin de Pays des Coteaux de l'Ardeche, or even a more locally specific variant.] The boundaries of a zone may reflect a consistent terroir, rather than an administrative convenience, and could potentially in the long run achieve the status of an AOC.
