Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 86.9 pts. and median of 87 pts. in 21 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by ADent on 11/6/2015 & rated 82 points: Very tart at first, but mellows remarkably after an hour or so. Good depth of black fruit, a few tertiary flavours. Probably has a few years left in it! (2872 views)
Tasted by vanpe003 on 3/16/2015 & rated 88 points: Pop/pour. Intially an interesting juxtaposition of a gamey stew against a sense of iodine / minerality. Some tannins still on the finish. Will be interesting to see if like last time (4 years ago), the stew note blows off. No rush to drink this, drink over the next couple years (by 2016) (3027 views)
Tasted by thebonnydooner on 2/4/2014 & rated 87 points: Same notes as prior bottle, basic but more than serviceable (3798 views)
Tasted by thebonnydooner on 9/6/2013 & rated 88 points: I actually thought this was pretty darn good, it is bright, fresh, but with good concentration and a nice long silky finish. For the money, excellent. (4136 views)
Tasted by pfc on 11/30/2012 & rated 89 points: Better on day three, improbably; give this one some real air. Pairs well with Pizza. (5791 views)
Tasted by prospero on 8/18/2012: Pure varietal fruit, harmonious and delightful. No obvious tricks, and time in cellar has toned down the sharp edges. Enjoy now, if you've got any left. This is what Spanish wine used to be before over-extraction, designer yeasts and wood chips entered the picture. Serve it to those whose knowledge extends past those practices, and be grateful for the small triumphs of nature. (3483 views)
Tasted by Reyman on 1/6/2012 & rated 88 points: Dry, earthy and brambly with good and balanced acidity. Nice cherry fruit. Nice by itself, but would pair well with grilled red meat. Great value at $10.00. (4684 views)
Tasted by spo on 12/23/2011 & rated 86 points: Stone, spicy raspberry and grapey. At one point seemed strongly acidic and then mellow and soft. (3567 views)
Tasted by ctbob on 10/28/2011: Completely drinkable (3666 views)
Tasted by ctbob on 10/16/2011: The distinctiveness of the varietal stands out on this bottle; seems heavier than the last; nothing stellar, but completely drinkable and the unusual flavors make it more interesting than most -- seems similar to the distinctive reds from the heel of the boot, for some reason... (3208 views)
Tasted by ctbob on 9/30/2011: V. pleasant light-weight red with v. good structure; priced right and ready now (3264 views)
Tasted by The New Alcoholic on 5/28/2011 & rated 85 points: I don't remember much about this wine. And that says it all.... (3459 views)
Tasted by Patches on 4/28/2011 & rated 85 points: This is a decent wine, but nothing more than I would expect for $10. Really not all that interesting and pretty muted. It does have good acidity and texture. will give my other bottle another 6 months. (3527 views)
Tasted by winecharmer on 3/16/2011 & rated 89 points: Similar to prior note, but run through a vinturi this time. More minerality and earth this time. Delicious and smooth. Easy drinking. (3619 views)
Tasted by vanpe003 on 3/6/2011 & rated 87 points: Decent nose with red berries, cherry, and green perfume. Decent enough on the palate after 15 minutes of air (an early stew note blows off). Medium weight with a fair amount of acidity. Probably better with food than on its own. Gets better with more air, with an obvious minerality showing up. 85 points at the outset, 87 points after 30 minutes. Nice if you like the style, and not bad for $10. G. hates it ("it tastes like grape juice, like a basement winemaking operation"). (3577 views)
Tasted by pifcho on 12/13/2010 & rated 89 points: Another superb $10 Garagiste discovery. My first experience with the grape - this is like an imaginery cross of gamay and syrah. Nice and juicy purple fruit upfront with some pepper and spice on the back end. Good minerality. Very easy to drink. (4023 views)
Tasted by cse on 12/13/2010: mediocre. does not suffer the standard flaw of spanish wines (hot hot hot) but doesn't have anything going for it on the upside other. it's inoffensive, i guess that's progress. (4032 views)
Tasted by winecharmer on 11/6/2010 & rated 88 points: Brief decant, but blossomed with more air; a subtle and smooth wine with a hint of minerality at first but the red fruits (raspberries and strawberries) eventually shows up. Not a stunner but might benefit from laying down for another 6 months/year. (4238 views)
Tasted by redrhonewine on 9/29/2010 & rated 88 points: Yes, vibrant and lively as Jancis Robinson put it. Although I would decant this next time as it became more rich and full after 3 hours. Red and dark red fruits with nice acidity and tannins that began to come to the surface after a few hours. (4430 views)
Tasted by grapefan on 2/19/2010 & rated 85 points: An unsual wine bought from a new shop in London, Bottle Apostle who told me this won a gold medal at the IWC in 2009. Bright ruby in colour with an earthy, woody red fruit aroma to it. A very fresh minerality to it with lots of red fruits such as raspberries and redcurrants. Great balance, acidity and soft tannins. I suspect this will last a while. Refreshingly different. (4741 views)

(GRACIANO Vina Zorzal) $9.99 Dear Friends, In the race to uncover the best and brightest new entrants, this wine has been very high on my list and we finally have an allocation. If you remember my rant over Spanish wine last week, here's an example of the bright side of Iberia. If today's Cabernet was for the domestic enthusiasts, tonight's offer is for the Europhiles among us and for those that thirst for something new (at a bargain price of course). If you consider yourself an afficionado in the $10 wine tug-of-war (a mine field that can be very difficult to navigate), this wine is not only in the running for the podium but it has gold medal aspirations that are well within reach (the wine already won the Gold Medal at the IWC last year so I'm a little behind the times). From the north of Spain, this is the bastion of Graciano and they are very proud of it. A Navarra staple (grown within a stone's throw of Rioja - one of the keys to this wine's quality), Graciano is mostly unknown in the US but Vina Zorzal has a chance to change that. When treated to the correct climate and soil structure, Graciano delivers wine with a full and deep red fruit character but the desirable yin-yang of low alcohol (much like a Loire red or an old-school Cotes du Rhone vinified in cement). It has a gorgeous fruit essence on the nose and a velvety quality on the palate (similar to Lacrima di Morro d'Alba) without any real need for oak to tame or flavor it (the wine we offer below, the 2007 Vina Zorzal, sees only a small amount of wood and 75-80% of the fruit is vinified in tank). If Parker swooned over today's 2007 The Sum offer, tonight it's Jancis Robinson's turn. Like this morning's offer, this is the most enthused I've ever seen Jancis over a wine like this. She is a very difficult scorer and tends toward the terroir-focused and precise so anything in the 16.5-17.5 range (out of 20.0) is considered an excellent review from her - especially for a $10 wine. She places the most importance on the verbiage in her reviews and this one is certainly enticing: Jancis Robinson (Dec 15th/2009): "Vi_a Zorzal Graciano 2007, Navarra - Wonderfully heady with powerful mulberry scents and juicy fruit. Great impact! Then vibrant and lively. Real lift. Precise and surely no oak but pure fruit. Amazing length. Nice label too. 16.5 Drink 2009-12" Not sure what I can add to that except I was just as excited as she was and that's why we've gone to great lengths to secure an allocation of what will surely be a highly sought after wine (once the Zorzal finds its way into more mouths in North America). For now, it remains $9.99 - a price that will surely go the way of the Dodo bird. A wine of real and vibrant character, Vina Zorzal's Graciano is a discovery that many of you will place among your most noteworthy of the year. For more information on this wine, please see Jancis' article, http://www.jancisrobinson.com/articles/a200912142.html VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for honest reflection of site place, vintage and varietal at a laughable tariff. ONE SHIPMENT ONLY of the 2007 directly from the winery cellar: 2007 Vi_a Zorzal Graciano (Navarra) (this wine is not imported to the US) Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Spain2378

Wine Map on weinlagen-info

Spain is the third largest wine producing nation in the world, occupying the majority of the Iberian Peninsula with vast diversity in climate, culture, and of course, wine. From inky, dark reds of the [Priorat] to dry, white Finos from Andalusia, Spain can easily boast of elaborating a wide variety of notable styles. Within Spain there are currently 62 demarcated wine regions, of which a handful have gained international recognition: [Rioja], Priorat and [Ribera del Duero]. Yet these regions are only a small sample of the high quality wines Spain produces. Regions such as Cava, Penedes, Somontano, Galicia, Rueda and Jerez are only a few of the numerous regions worthy of exploration throughout Spain. Spain can also lay claim to having the most land under vine in the world, growing up to, by some accounts, 600 indigenous varietals of which Tempranillo is their most well known. Other popular varietals include [Garnacha], Bobal and Monastrell for reds and for whites; the infamous [sic] Palomino Fino grape which is used in the production of sherry wine, Pedro Ximenez in Montilla Morilles, Albarino used in the creation of the bright, effervescent wines of Galicia, and Verdejo in Rueda. - Source: - Catavino.net

Spain is not in the forefront of winemaking for its dessert wines, other than for its sweet wines from Sherry country including the highly revered Olorosos (when sweetened). But apart from Sherry Spain has a range of styles of dessert wines, ranging from the those made from the Pedro Ximenez grape primarily in Jerez and Montilla-Moriles) to luscious, red dessert wines made in the Mediterranean from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape. Some good Moscatels are made in Mallorca, Alicante and Navarre. The northwest corner of Spain, Galicia, with its bitter Atlantic climate, is even making dessert wines, called “Tostadillos” in the village of Ribadivia (similar to France’s “Vin de Paille”). The Canary Islands have made interesting dessert wines for centuries (they are mentioned by Shakespeare, for example) and in recent years the quality of winemaking has been improved and the Canary Islands wines are being better marketed now. The winemaking styles for “Vinos Dulces” are also diverse, from “Late Harvest” (Vendimia Tardía) to “Fortified Wines” (Fermentación Parcial). Based on in-spain.info.
