Community Tasting Notes (average 91.9 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 334 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by bablues on 11/25/2023 & rated 94 points: Brought to Il Mulino AC and it paired with everything so well. No detailed note but this was fabulous (962 views)
Tasted by Hazeo on 11/13/2023 & rated 93 points: Didn’t take notes but it was still an excellent and beautiful wine with years of life ahead. Perhaps I could’ve been refrained and let it rest longer… (966 views)
Tasted by andtheodor on 9/15/2023 & rated 93 points: Gorgeous, clean, pure Sangiovese. Feels early maturity, time to start drinking these. (1151 views)
Tasted by ronte bello on 5/27/2023 & rated 93 points: Give it three hours of air and you will have a beautiful wine. Mouth watering dried cherries, resolved tannins. Nice weight. (1470 views)
Tasted by mike410 on 12/12/2022 & rated 93 points: At it's peak and should stay there for a couple of years. (1822 views)
Tasted by vinodolphin on 9/10/2022 & rated 91 points: This is a favorite and it had another good showing. (1599 views)
Tasted by David J Cooper on 8/19/2022 & rated 93 points: Clear medium light red. Very nice moderately funky Sangiovese nose. Cherry, earth, dried mushrooms, black currant and spice. Dry earthy cherry flavours and a perfectly balanced red fruit finish.

This wine will always retain it’s fresh fruit nose, 2007s are that way I think. The 2006s are more structured and have developed more funk. (1685 views)
Tasted by thewiz on 4/17/2022 & rated 91 points: (Decanted for half an hour)
Lots of herbs and with a pleasant warmth and sweetness on the palate with primary fruit starting to dry up. This has opened up very well.

Tasted by SeaWine on 4/12/2022: Delicious Sangiovese-based wine. Not mind-blowing, but no complaints, either. No hurry to drink, in my opinion, but I am also unsure how this might improve in time. Save one to see, I suppose. (1749 views)
Tasted by Dale M on 2/5/2022 & rated 93 points: Decanted 45 min. Time has been kind to the 07 Fontarollo, sporting an alluring combo of sweet, floral and savory tones on the nose, with plenty under the hood. Fontarollo has the rep as being a tad more ‘modern’ than say the Rancia, which I agree with, but after almost 15 years, this seems to have pulled back into the middle, and speaks clearly to me of Tuscany while still have a little flair. Dark and brooding perhaps, but well defined raspberry and other red fruits delight with the now balanced acid, tannin and soils tones – surprisingly strong and log on the back end. I would have previously handicapped this as ready to drink in the next few years, but based on a bottle like this one, I’d say another 5 to 10 years might not be out reach. Splendid. (1666 views)
Tasted by tomlee on 1/29/2022 & rated 93 points: Dark red in color. 14% ABV. 100% Sangiovese. Gorgeous nose of red fruits, tar, anise and flowers. Medium body with perfect acidity. Rustic and concentrated. Dried cherries, raspberries, tobacco and spice on the palate. Exceptional length on the finish with prominent tannins. At 15 years of age there is still enough fruit to keep everything in balance. As always this is a great food wine and was exceptional with pasta in a hearty red sauce. Best over the next several years. (1436 views)
Tasted by thewiz on 1/5/2022 & rated 90 points: (From half bottle, decanted for one hour)
Brick red colour with tight nose showing incipient maturity with hints of herbs, warm fruit, leather and a hint of burnt notes on the nose. Still with a very nice and pleasant acidity on the acidic palate combined with smoothing tannins adding to the structure. Very pleasant and intense finish showing a touch of fruity sweetness still.

Tasted by mike410 on 11/21/2021 & rated 93 points: Still going very strong. Has many more years at it's peak. Solid dark red color. Well balanced with tons of fruit on the palette. (1445 views)
Tasted by prism on 10/16/2021 & rated 94 points: Sow-O'd for two hours. Last of eight, and still going strong. Classic sangiovese notes and beautifully evolved: paired perfectly with homemade cream of tomato soup as an app and baked chicken and chorizo over brown rice. (1491 views)
Tasted by 560 B&W on 10/5/2021 & rated 93 points: Really amazing right now. Oak fully integrated. May get better; certainly not declining. Lithe for 14% (1431 views)
Tasted by Topper on 9/8/2021 & rated 91 points: This has mellowed out with time, and in doing so has lost a bit of its personality and spark. Time to drink these up. (1659 views)
Tasted by prism on 8/23/2021 & rated 94 points: Beautifully evolved; just a delight to drink.

Paired with meatloaf. Mmmm! (1254 views)
Tasted by ogres3 on 7/11/2021 & rated 91 points: Drank a few days ago and no specific recollection. Plum coloration. 14% alcohol, not a shy wine. (1455 views)
Tasted by thewiz on 7/6/2021 & rated 90 points: (Decanted for one hour)
Deep red colour with a brick red hue. Maturing nose showing red berries, dried herbs and some liquorice root. Palate with tannins starting to smooth out, drying fruit, but backed up by a nice acidity on the lengthy finish.
(Best 2017-2032) (704 views)
Tasted by vinodolphin on 7/6/2021 & rated 93 points: Very nice. Many years left on this one. Still good fruit with a long finish (1319 views)
Tasted by MuddyBoots on 6/25/2021: Bought on release. Full color to the rim. Bright dark sour cherry fruit on the nose - some herbs - still fresh. Some vanilla ? Not especially complex in my view - but this is Sangiovese. Drops off a bit in the mid palate before the flavors return on a long finish with dusty tannins that grip the gums. Really only medium weight. I didn't notice any heat until the second glass - the warmth of the year has been well managed. In need of food. Tasting quite young. Your view of this is no doubt informed by what you think of 14 year old Sangiovese in a ripe year - but this is surely a fine example of what you sign up for. Next Day - the fruit more complex / earthy / very sour cherry. Some oak in the background. Fine dusty tannins quite present still. Fine. (1359 views)
Tasted by mike410 on 6/9/2021 & rated 94 points: This has developed into an amazing wine. No hint of its age whatsoever. Still maintaining its deep dark color with no bricking, and balance throughout the wine. Should drink well for another 3-5 years. (1443 views)
Tasted by thewiz on 6/6/2021 & rated 90 points: (Decanted for one hour)
Brick red colour with a mature nose showing warm red berries, liquorice and some herbs. Opens up with carnation and a lovely fresh note of violets in a very positive and pleasant way. Warmth and intensity on the palate still showing tannins and a nice acidity almost feeling like citrus notes and with a intense and lengthy finish not fully integrated yet. This should probably reward a few more years of extra cellaring.

Tasted by askoje on 5/22/2021 & rated 92 points: Very interesting nose. Dried dark cherries, herbs, buffalo mozzarella, and a component I rarely find in wine, sort of red/dust/rusty farm soil. Smelled better than my description. It had some noble/exotic notes for sure. Very nice on the palate. Lots of acidity and cherry fruit, at the same time balanced and dry. This wines goes on and on and has a very pleasant and interesting flavor curve. My first Fontalloro, and certainly not the last. Would love to taste a newer vintage. 92/93 (1299 views)
Tasted by ogres3 on 5/14/2021 & rated 91 points: I liked more than the missus. Fruit is still fairly fresh but has had time to mature. Doesn't have the EtOH of new world wines. Pairs well with food. (1253 views)

This historic estate, which dates to the Middle Ages, was purchased by current owner Giuseppe Mazzocolin's father-in-law, Domenico Poggiali, in 1966. Winemaker Franco Bernabei draws on vines more than 50 years old from three vineyards-Fontalloro in Chianti Classico and the Casalino and Arcidossino vineyards in Chianti Colle Senesi-for this red. Because it straddles two DOCG zones, the wine is classified as Indicazione Geo-grafica Tipica (IGT). After fermentation, it was aged in barriques for 20 months.

Sangiovese

SANGIOVESE: (Pronounced "sahn-joh-vhe-se").
Sangiovese - Italy's claim to fame, the pride of Tuscany. Traditionally made, the wines are full of cherry fruit, earth, and cedar. It produces Chianti (Classico), Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montepulciano, Montefalco Rosso, and many others. Sangiovese is also the backbone in many of the acclaimed, modern-styled "Super-Tuscans", where it is blended with Bordeaux varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc) and typically aged in French oak barrels, resulting a wine primed for the international market in the style of a typical California cabernet: oaky, high-alcohol, and a ripe, jammy, fruit-forward profile.[16]

Semi-classic grape grown in the Tuscany region of Italy. Used to produce the Chianti and other Tuscan red wines. Has many clonal versions, two of which seem to predominate. The Sangiovese Grosso clone Brunello variety is used for the dark red, traditionally powerful and slow-maturing "Brunello di Montalcino" wine. The other is the Sangiovese Piccolo, also known under the historical synonym name Sangioveto, used for standard Chianti Classico DOC wines. Old vine derived wine is often used in the better versions, needing several years ageing to reach peak. A third clone, Morellino, is used in a popular wine blend with the same name found in the southern part of the province. Recent efforts in California with clones of this variety are very promising, producing medium-bodied reds with rich cherry or plumlike flavors and aromas. Among the available clonal versions are R6 and R7, derived from the Montalcino region of Italy, having average productivity/ripening and producing small berries on medium size clusters. R10 and R24 are well-recommended. R23, listed as deriving from the Emilia-Romagna region, has good vigor with medium-small clusters with earlier ripening. R102 derives from the Montepulciano region and reported to have average vigor with moderate productivity that results in higher sugar levels and good acidity from medium-small berries on medium-small clusters. Has synonym name of Nielluccio where grown in Corsica.
