| Community Tasting Notes (average 91.5 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 8 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by Pugs on 11/3/2017 & rated 91 points: Bought 4 bottles for $5 each at Spectrum Wine auctions. Glad I did. While this is clearly on the decline it is a beautiful wine today and will be for another year or two I think. Classic aged nose of prune, tobacco, violets, forest floor. Totally integrated tannins and a silky finish that lasts about 20 seconds. At $5 it's crazy town but even at the current auction average of around $25-30 I think it makes for a really interesting wine to drink now. Oxidized, but showing amazing notes of candied fig, loamy earth and sweet pipe tobacco. (1683 views) | | Tasted by indiscriminate palate on 3/20/2013: Very classic, restrained, aged cab, with sour cherry, tobacco, graphite, light spice. Fully-resolved tannin, lively acidity, very low alcohol. Very very nice. (2813 views) | | Tasted by indiscriminate palate on 6/15/2012: This was a polarizing wine, though quite typical for a restrained older Cali cab. Garnet, with no sign of bricking. Sour cherries and leather dominate with dark fruit, cedar, tobacco, and savory baking spices. Med- body, fully integrated med- tannin, med+ acidity. Spicy, sour palate. Needs some air to show its stuff, and does not fall apart hours later. This still has some life ahead of it. (3590 views) | | Tasted by JuniorSamples on 1/10/2008 & rated 93 points: Opened and decanted for about half an hour. Color was still even garnet. Drank over two evenings, the first with filet mignon. This was very enjoyable. Nose of black fruits, wood chips, tobacco. Palate of blackberries, a hint of spice. Fully integrated tannins. Couldn't tell you how much more life this may have, but I wish I had another bottle (or ten!). (2589 views) | | Tasted by bear on 12/24/2004 & rated 93 points: This was a bottle that I acquired when I was (briefly) chief financial officer for the winery for a few months after Chip Lyeth sold it. The wine was probably made by Chip and Bill Arbios. We had it for Christmas eve dinner with roast beef. Decanted it to let it breathe for about 45 minutes and to avoid significant sediment. It opened up beautifully, very smooth integrated tannins, still lots of fruit. A terrific wine. Drinking well now. Nice blend; juicy fruit. Gentle, long finish. 5-11-16-7: 89/100. (383 views) |
| Lyeth Producer websiteRed Bordeaux BlendRed Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.
Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.USAAmerican wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.California2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson Sonoma CountyMendocino CountyAlexander Valley Alexander Valley Winegrowers Association | Wikipedia
