Community Tasting Notes (average 82.8 pts. and median of 86 pts. in 39 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by SadEdjo on 10/3/2022 & rated 85 points: plastic cork FFS! Thin, metallic, sharp, bad (373 views)
Tasted by CRichards on 1/12/2014: Disappointing; perhaps past its best? Cooking wine (3469 views)
Tasted by KevinS on 1/3/2012 & rated 83 points: Over the hill... (4212 views)
Tasted by Hodby on 11/18/2010 & rated 86 points: Medium red. Very primary nose of lilac powder, red currants, white pepper. Medium hard tannin, with sharp acids noticeable. Quite densely fruited on the palate, plaum and red currants with herbal notes. Somehow it compensates enough, a country style wine. Bottle # 5 of six. (4628 views)
Tasted by smeliot on 9/25/2010 & rated 82 points: High tannins, good fruit. (4112 views)
Tasted by Tejano on 11/23/2008: Mmmmm....cooked, burnt, blackened...no bueno por nada. (4760 views)
Tasted by Terry on 10/9/2008 flawed bottle: Once again volitile acidity resulted in this one being poured down the drain (2411 views)
Tasted by SacredCow on 1/24/2008 & rated 80 points: Nose of blackberries and earth. On the palate, light to medium bodied with blackberries, sour cherries and a shrill acidity, with a rather short finish. While the wine did put on some weight with time after being opened (maybe two hours), the acidity left it unbalanced. By hour three, it was pretty well oxidized. Not sure where it is going, but I no longer hold out much hope for it. (2514 views)
Tasted by abkennedy on 10/4/2007 & rated 75 points: Acidity. Very little fruit. (2420 views)
Tasted by rogerr on 8/31/2007 & rated 75 points: Fruit up front but unpleasant medicinal finish. Poured it down the drain. (2421 views)
Tasted by Tejano on 4/12/2007: Well...a little bretty upon opening that turned to a beefy and earthy like aroma, that did have some dark ripe fruit lingering in the background. Very thin tasting with an acidic twang that overpowered anything that may be trying to reach out. Not pleasant. (2408 views)
Tasted by 10izguy on 3/15/2007: dumped this down the drain, not sure if the bottle was corked or if it was truly bad, in either event will not be buying any more "good deals" at Calgary airport. (3039 views)
Tasted by SacredCow on 12/23/2006 & rated 85 points: Nice wine, if a bit simple. On the nose, blackberries and raspberries, with a bit of leather. On the palate, on the thin side of medium-bodied, with cherries, raspberries and blackberries, finishing short with some herbs and spiciness. Still not drinking as well as on release. Hold remaining bottles and hope. (2529 views)
Tasted by SacredCow on 10/20/2006 & rated 86 points: On the nose, moderate levels of blackberries and black cherries with a bit of spiciness. On the palate, light to medium-bodied frame, with simple raspberries and blackberries and a moderately short finish where some oak spice and somewhat heavy and drying tannins kicked in. I wish I would have followed up later to see if the tannins softened, but I never did get back to this bottle. (2534 views)
Tasted by SacredCow on 8/9/2006 flawed bottle: Corked. (2526 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 7/6/2006 & rated 80 points: WIML80,PURPLE82,WA89,NOWS

Tasted June 6, 2006 at home. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glass Dark garnet to purple color in the glass, slightly dusty looking throughout. Nose of black berries, raspberries, black cherries, a smidge of either leather/brett, hard to tell so small. Flavors of cherry tarts, raspberries and a metallic finish. Very tart acidity that eventually mellowed a little with time in glass but never went away (offputting) with firm tannins that did eventually soften some with time in glass. Drink over the next year. Not impressed with this bottle at all. Based on the local retail price of $13.89 I paid I'd say the value here is still unacceptable. Quite a different from the last bottle tasted.

PURPLE’S comments:

“Promising nose of rasberry, with hint of asparagus fern or celery leaves . Palate, at first velvety , but I got some asparagus and metal on the back. Light to medium body wine. Should have decanted 1 hour to blow off funk then you can get the rasberry but still somewhat herbal/vegetal. Overall, just an adequate wine. 82 pts.” (2854 views)
Tasted by Terry on 5/27/2006 flawed bottle: Volitile Acidity resulted in this one being poured down the drain (3219 views)
Tasted by Terry on 5/27/2006 flawed bottle: Volitile Acidity resulted in this second bottle also being poured down the drain. What a total bummer that I may be seeing a production problem here. (3240 views)
Tasted by mdstenner on 5/23/2006 & rated 75 points: Not showing well at all - more of the same one-dimensional sweet fruit as last time I tried this. (3335 views)
Tasted by samurai on 3/9/2006 & rated 84 points: Rather non-descript and uninsprining. (3423 views)
Tasted by MrSnooty on 2/18/2006 & rated 86 points: Deep blood red, inky colour. Some faint smoke on the nose with sweet red fruit, cherries. Medium bodied, grainy tannins, following the initial impression of cherries and acidic fruit (cherry or maybe a hint of green apple?) Nice but not amazing. (4168 views)
Tasted by psmith on 1/28/2006 & rated 50 points: A selection of St. Cosme wines (Columbus, OH): Unfiltered and unfined, which perhaps the winemaker ought to rethink in light of the secondary fermentation evident here. Yeasty, like bad sweat socks or stale beer. Tasted from three bottles with similar results. Absolutely disgusting. (3984 views)
Tasted by Rani on 11/27/2005 & rated 86 points: Difficult to enjoy now because it's too young. Needs another year to settle. Huge concentration of fruit, lanolin and tannins. Quite harsh on the palate, and I think it will improve with a year or two of cellaring, though it may never achieve decent balance. (3543 views)
Tasted by mdstenner on 11/26/2005: Post Thanksgiving Party (Home (Tulsa, OK)): Rather too oaky and one-dimensional from this showing. The fruit is still rich, with ripe blackberry, pepper and spice, but the oak was too much too the forefront. Even a slight chill down didn't help much. (4085 views)
Tasted by muttt on 11/14/2005 & rated 87 points: Benefits from at least an hour in the decanter. Tonight this was much sweeter and grapier than the last few. (3972 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.
